Sewing Room Update…

First let me say, if you think I’m all done, you’ll be sorely disappointed in today’s post… but on the other hand, there is promise of things to come. I’m getting there, but it’s just taking longer than I thought. I have been sort of under the weather for the last 2 days and just couldn’t do my part in this whole ordeal. But today was my hubby’s day off and he went full force helping me get things somewhat accomplished. You’re going to laugh when you see what I mean by “accomplished.” But I do see progress…and I’m going to L-O-V-E it!!!

Let’s see, now where do I start? If you’ve missed the last few posts of mine, you’ve missed me telling about getting 3 new pieces of furniture for my sewing room. I wanted to get rid of all the clear tubs and stackable units and particle board bookshelves, and make it a little neater in there. My hubby had the brainy idea to move my big brown cabinet from one wall to the back corner of my room but the ceilings are slanted so the cabinet had to be cut off. That was a big undertaking…but when we pulled the cabinet away from the wall, OOPS… we found a big unfinished area where a window used to be. My sewing room was an added on porch a long time ago. So not only did we have to cut off the bottom of the cabinet, my hubby had to find a way to fix the gaping hole in the wall. Let me show you a few pictures so far… but I’ll tell you now…it’s not pretty…

My hubby took the doors off my cabinet first before he cut the bottom off…

When we moved the cabinet out from the wall, here’s what we found…

CIMG3958

We dragged the cabinet into the living room and worked in there, since it involved “sawdust!”

My sewing room is a total disaster by now…

The cut off cabinet is going back in the corner and out of the way… you can see where a shelf used to be, so I had to paint that section of the wall, repair a floor tile in the corner, my hubby had to fix a ceiling tile that was falling down, and we had to put strip of wood over a bare section of wood that was always covered up… you can also see how my ceilings slant down and why the cabinet had to be cut off to fit back there…

While my hubby was out searching in the garage for something to fill in the hole on the wall, I started putting my fabrics back in the cabinets. It was much easier to reach the top shelf now… I love it this height. At first I was doing a really neat job of putting my fabrics in there, but then I realized I just needed to get them in there as fast as I could, because there was a lot still yet to do…

It was rather heavy to push, but we got the cabinet back in the corner and it’s nice to have it out of the way now! It sort of stuck out when you first walked in my room…

CIMG3995

My hubby did find one piece of paneling out in the garage and tacked it up and then nailed it to the wall. I really didn’t have time to mess with perfection at this point. I just wanted something that would blend in. My sewing room isn’t a perfect room… wavy floors and crooked walls and the trim isn’t great, but I think it will look okay once it’s painted…

CIMG3990

I went to the basement to find the paint from my sewing room… hurrah… I found the can…opened it and YUCK…. look…

CIMG3987

…but I stirred and stirred and stirred and eventually it got creamy and turned the right color… so I started painting the paneling piece. One coat down…

So that’s been my day…now you’ll know why I didn’t get any comments answered…but I did read them… Thank you all so much… Tomorrow will be straightening out day I think…

I’ll keep you posted… it won’t be long till I’m back in my sewing chair!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Brave people! The room is going to be a testament to both of you and your work ethic. I should have known George could make the cabinet shorter — it looked like a monster project to me and it probably was, but it fits and has lots of wonderful space. You were right to fill it up fast and wait to fine-tune it later. I liked the illustrations you put on the doors. If the painted panel is not a perfect match, you might be able to add more pictures or something else there as a distraction. Your new storage is going to be so useful and so attractive.

I liked seeing yesterday’s school dresses, especially Molly’s green jumper — the style is close to one my mother made me in junior high in dark blue and green plaid. It was one of the prettiest dresses I’ve ever had and one of the reasons I’m so glad to have this one for Nell (Nellie).

Congratulations on work well done — I’m enjoying watching your progress. By the time you are done, you’ll know exactly what you want to do for this year’s back-to-school outfit, and September is a great month for the first fall clothes.

    1. HI Marilyn,
Maybe not so much brave…but crazy!!! That might fit us better!
Actually the paint looks pretty good this morning. My hubby did one more little redo on a piece of wood that was boxed in on the wall. We’ve always wondered what was under this 4×4 column right on the wall, so this morning he took a crobar and pried it off…it was just some big dead wire that they boxed around… The people we bought this house from WERE CRAZY… at least crazy carpenters… everything they fixed or did was done the wrong way. They notched out the ceiling tile and the floor tile just to cover up a dead wire…
      I thought you’d like seeing Molly’s green dress… :o)
I’m getting there… bit by bit and button by button! It’s going to be really nice and very streamlined I think.
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. You are one of the busiest/most productive people I have ever witnessed! LOL!! good job – great start – you’ll feel SO relieved when it’s all together!

    1. HI Mary,
Well, I do like to stay busy…I have to agree with you there!
My room IS off to a great start and it will be so nice when it’s all done…
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Being under the weather and still getting so much accomplished is amazing. Anxiously awaiting the finished room. Isn’t paint great! Glad you were able to save the old and use it. I can remember my dad would strain the paint through an old nylon to remove the icky stuff.
Looks like your naked girls are enjoying watching you work. 🙂

    1. HI Joy,
My hubby said Kristoffer had a paint strainer out in the garage, but the more I stirred, the more I thought it was okay… there were pieces of rust from the can that fell in but as I stirred they just went to the sides. I dipped my paint brush in the middle of the can… then when I needed to use the roller, I scooped out the paint from the middle too… when I was all done, I transferred it a clean container. It looks remarkably nice this morning.
My girls WERE watching intently to what we were doing… :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. It’s going to be great….take your time
I had to chuckle when you discovered the window behinds your storage unit.
When we moved to the country I had measured all the windows so I’d have curtains ready when we moved in… But there was a big wardrobe in one bedroom covering one window…what a surprise.
Thank goodness I had more fabric☺️

    1. HI Kathie,
Yes, this house is ALWAYS full of surprises for us… never a dull moment when we get into a project…
Could you send me info on your little capes? I want to show them but I’m not sure if I know the whole story… also if you have figured out how to get any more pictures to me, that’d be great too…
      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Oh my, your “girls” must wonder what all the commotion is about! Your workroom redo has turned into quite the renovation, Jeanne, especially while you are under the weather, but if anyone is up to such a task, it is you and your hubby. Your freshly painted wall matches very well, Jeanne, and George is so handy with all the repairs and adjustments. Do take care, however, not to push too hard while you’re not feeling your best. The improved layout and wonderful organization in your “new” sewing room should spark your creativity and boost your productivity. I love watching the transformation and will look forward to what’s next, but like your girls and their dresses, we’ll just have to be patient for the final reveal. Wishing you smooth sailing in the process and satisfaction in the result, Jeanne! You’ll soon be stitching up dolly dresses in no time!

    1. HI Anne,
I’m trying desperately to get my sewing machine uncovered as Rebecca has a dress for a rehearsal dinner that I need to get fixed for her. Somewhere, there is sewing machine under all the clutter… I just have to find it!
It will speed things up I think when I get it all back in place… I’m like everyone else, I can’t wait!
      Thanks Anne,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. What a big job you and George have tackled, Jeanne. Isn’t it wonderful that you can see ahead and know that it will be so much nicer to work in? What a great perspective!

I trust you’re getting a good night’s sleep after all of this work.

    Blessings.

    1. Thank you Becky,
This has turned into a monumental task. Rebecca has been helping me this afternoon and we have started to see some real progress! I’m hoping a few more days and I’ll be back in business.
      I think I’ll sleep well tonight…
      Thanks Becky,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Finally able to see what you wrote today, Jeanne! My computer would not scroll down, so I just went ahead and did my things today, knowing if would probably show up this evening. Sure enough!

Oh my gosh, well, you certainly have been getting things done, and I am sure it will be just wonderful when you get finished. Your house sounds interesting, to say the least!

Yes, I would just put things in the cabinet or drawer that it belongs in, and then later straighten them out and fix them up neater. Who is going to see a closed drawer or cabinet door anyway? The trick now will be will you remember which drawer will have the things you are looking for? That’s my trouble with my containers! I have them all fixed up, but where do I start looking? I’m sure, though, that once you start sewing again, it will come much easier. At least the sun was shining today!

    1. Hi Linda,
Things have really started to take shape today, but you ate so right. I’ve put things in drawers and not remembered which drawer had that grouping…it will just take some time to get it right.
Rebecca has made we weed out some more things to make room for the things I really use the most. I can’t wait till it’s a full functioning room!
      Thanks Linda
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. I think you have more energy in your little finger than I do in my whole body! What a wonderful setup you will have. I love seeing your posts of all the dresses of one type of another. I changed my mind about a skirt based on a circle skirt I saw in the School Is Starting Post. Then had to look through all the patterns to find one. Hope it works out okay. Never do anything by the pattern: That’s my rule, I guess.

    1. Hi Susette,
I think you are just like me… here’s my rule…fly by the seat of your pants! Usually it works… :o)
I’m glad you’re enjoying my messy room pics…real life!
      Thanks Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne
