Yep, it’s the start of another doll coat…

Maybe it’s the super cold weather we’ve been having or maybe it’s just the fun I’m having making them, but here goes another attempt at a doll coat…this time, one for the American Girl dolls. It’s going to be made from a pretty blue and cream tweed fabric that I’ve had in my stash for quite a while. I ABSOLUTELY love this fabric and hope I can replicate what I have in my mind. I always knew it would end up being a coat, but I didn’t know for who or what style.

Here’s what I have gotten finished so far…a pretty capelet, attached this time, with a sweet little collar on top. The fabric is very soft and drapes well. I like the way it hangs and it has enough body that a lining isn’t necessary.

Here’s a close up of the fabric…

I love the capelet on this coat and this time it’s attached…

I had never used the pattern (on the left) for this coat, but decided I would this time. I wanted it to be more flared and longer, so I used the skirt section from the pattern (on the right) to make it a little different.

The collar and cape are both lined with the same sheer like fabric I used for Janie’s coat… They lay very well. I’m thinking there might be some silk in this fabric…it’s wonderful to the touch…

I wanted this coat to be a sort of Victorian style, and if I can find a piece of fabric that goes with the tweed, I’d like to make a pretty dress…I’ll look and see what I can find…

Yes, I think this will do nicely…

I only have a few scraps, so I’ll have to figure out how to cut corners…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Oh, that is going to be so pretty, Jeanne! I love to see how you put pieces of material together and then we get to see them become such darling and original outfits! I see the red coat has top stitching on the cape and wonder if you will do that, or add trim, braid, or just leave it plain. So much to think about! It’s amazing what you do, and you do it well!

That second material will be a perfect match for the coat. Do you have enough for a dress, or is that going to be just part of the dress? I guess a pretty, solid blue would work if you don’t have enough for a dress made completely out of that material. I can’t believe how you come up with so many different kinds of material that go together so well!

We have snow lightly falling here, it’s pretty now, but then it will get really cold tomorrow. I hope you get some snow if you haven’t yet, since I bet your yard looks beautiful in the snow!

    1. Thank you Linda,
I’m glad you like it so far…I think it’s going to be very pretty when it’s all finished.
You’ll see tomorrow what I did…I like it and hope everyone else will too.
Finding that cotton fabric for a dress, and having it match so perfectly, was truly a blessing. I’m not sure how much of a dress I can get out of it, but I’m going to try…

We probably got about 2″ of snow this morning…with some more coming later this afternoon. It is very pretty, but I’m staying inside… :o)
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. I’m very much enjoying your coats. This one is off to a beautiful start. I love the fabric for the coat and dainty floral will be delightful. I hope you have enough fabric. It will be like a little spot of spring peeking out.
    Lots of snow here today.
Hope you have a good day.
    Take care.

    1. Thanks so much Charlotte,
I’m glad you’re liking this blue coat so far… it will probably be considered a Spring coat and the dress will certainly be Springy!!

      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. What great patterns you have chosen. There appear to be a lot more possibilities for the future just looking at them. That red one with the buttons on the right is equally adorable. The fabric for this coat is perfect. I keep looking, but I haven’t found anything lately that would look nice as a coat. And you’re going to make a dress too? Wonderful. Looking forward to seeing it.
Someone mentioned that My Life/Walmart has some new background scenes available. Have you seen them? I haven’t found them yet.
Sounds like a lot of readers have snow or about to snow. We may get some rain later today which would be wonderful.
    Keep warm.

    1. Hi Joy,
The red coat pattern on the right is the one I used for the burgundy and sort of hairy wool like coats that I showed on Nellie last week. It’s a great pattern…
I haven’t seen the background scenes at Walmart, but I’ll look the next time I go… thanks for the headsup!
We got about 2″ of snow this morning…so the ground is all white now. Ok…I’ve had my snow…let’s bring on Spring!!!
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Love the blue patterned tweed and your design. The inside material is just as pretty and seems to be peeking out like Spring. It never ceases to amaze me of your talent and creativity. To watch the outfits you make come to life in style and fashion is so appreciative of your abilities.
Hope everyone is staying warm. My son sent a video of the snow falling from his 15th floor office window. He knows I miss the snow so it was a real treat to watch the video.

    1. Thank you for your sweet compliments, Paula,
I’m hoping to get more done on this dress and coat set today…I’m certainly not going anywhere because of the snow we received. It’s not much…about 2 inches, but there’s ice underneath and it’s too cold anyway.
How sweet of your son to send you a “snowfall in action” video. I bet you’ve watched it over and over…
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Hi Jeanne,
Love the new coat/dress combo! You do such an awesome job selecting just the right fabrics.
I can’t wait to see the steps you take to bring this outfit to fruition.
I’m with you… All the snow can go away now! We’ve busted out the snow blower more this season than the last two winters combined! yuck and brrrrr !
Enjoy the warmth of your sewing studio and here’s hope spring is here sooner than later!
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. Thanks Ingrid,
I’m glad you like the coat so far…just wait…it’s even better today…at least I think so.
Yes, this cold weather is pretty bad now…maybe it’s because I’m older, but snow just doesn’t have its appeal like it used to…
      Spring come quickly…
      Thanks Ingrid,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. I’m really enjoying your “coat couture” designs during this wintery weather, Jeanne! This one is so special, and I think it will make a lovely Victorian ensemble with the charming capelet and sweet Peter Pan collar. I love the color and texture of the tweed, and the pretty, feminine fabric for the dress is a perfect match. You are such a master at mixing materials, that every one of your designs is an excellent tutorial in coordinating patterns. This one has the makings of a stunner, and now I’m eagerly awaiting the details of buttons and trims. Stay warm, Jeanne, and have fun finishing this beauty in blue in the warmth of your sewing room!

    1. HI Anne,
I’m so glad you are enjoying seeing me work on the doll coats. It’s been a while since I made any coats, so I’m having lots of fun… I have been trying to get some done on the dress and hope to have something so show in a day or two…
I HAVE been staying warm in my sewing room… the heater is pointed in my door! :o)
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. That tweed fabric is really sweet . Coatsare certainly needed here. We have about five inches of snow on the ground with more coming. We had ice underneath it all. Yesterday, driving to church, the car temperature read 3 degrees brrr. The fabric you’ve chosen has just a hint of spring about it, which is nice.
Looking forward to seeing what the dress underneath will look like as well.

    1. Thank you Laura,
I’m crazy about that tweed too… It’s really a nice one and I haven’t seen anything like it in the stores recently that is this quality… I don’t remember where I got it, but I should have gotten more! :o(
We have about 2 inches and tomorrow is supposed to be frigid… I think the range starting tonight and the high tomorrow is going to be 2 -14 degrees… BRRRR… that’s too cold for anything! … except staying in my sewing room and sewing! :o) That’s just what I’ll do!
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Oh yummy! Love the fabric, the color, the style and that teeny floral is just the ticket!
Hope you can make it work!
    Stay warm!

    1. HI Kathie,
I DID make it work… I had just enough and now I’m working on it… I’m glad you like it!
I’m staying warm… how about you?
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. While I was watching the auction last night, I thought of how effectively your yard worked as a background for that lovely coat. I hope you are that lucky again. The new coat will be warm for winter and blue for spring. The material looks determined to ravel but you don’t seem to be having any problems with it. I’m happy that you had enough of the dress fabric — it sounds like everyone really likes it.
Your model looks so pleased with with her new outfit. Is this Emmie?

We had snow today but it should melt tomorrow and return on Saturday. We had rain last week. I don’t know how they are predicting the weather now — we could have nearly anything any time. The good thing is that the days are already noticeably longer.
