Want to see my cutting table?

I think I was just about ready to show you my cutting table/picture taking area, when I was so rudely interrupted! A while back I decided I wanted to get rid of my huge cutting table and have one that folded up on the wall, where I could use the flat surface of the dresser if I wanted to. I still need to find a nickle rod to use instead of the yard stick I have up there now, but I think you can get the idea of it. If you remember, I bought the oak dresser below the table, which had a lower section in the middle of it. This is where we decided to put the table section.

My hubby cut the shape for the table out of a 3/4″ piece of plywood…the nicest grade he could find. He rounded off the corners so I wouldn’t stab myself!

cimg5484

He used a long brass piano hinge to attach it to the wall so it would lift up and let down, similar to a Murphy bed.

We found some nice brushed nickle hooks that he attached to the wall and they are working very well. I have my gray background fabric just pinned on the ruler, but when I get my new rod, I’ll make a casing and thread it onto the rod.

When I’m not using the cutting table, the fabric will just be like a curtain there… When I am using the table, the rod with the fabric can just be put back on the hooks.

I was using my table tonight so I forgot to take a picture of it with it up and the curtain hanging down.

BUT… I do have a sneak peek at who’s next… see if you can guess…

See you tomorrow,

  1. Your new cutting table looks just great, Jeanne! Kudos to George, the master carpenter! Your room is getting more and more professional looking every time you show it to us, with every little or big project you do! I would think you are about done now, so let the sewing begin again!

I think that is Rebecca trying to hide from us! Beautiful fabric too, and can’t wait to see what comes next! It looks like it has an Empire waistline, maybe a Regency dress?

    1. Thanks Linda,
Yes… my master carpenter… I’ll have to tell him you said that! When I get the rod and just a few more little things, I’ll have a BIG reveal of my sewing room again. Oops…that’s Sewing Studio! :o)
You’ll have to wait and see what’s coming…but you guessed Rebecca right!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Like Linda, I love the new fabric and I agree that it looks to me like a beautiful new Regency gown. Already I’m impatient for tomorrow to see how it looks from the front, and maybe how it looks with a skirt.

The cutting table is wonderful. It’s a great size and extremely neat and professional looking and does double duty as a photography area — and it takes up no floor space when you are not using it. I’ll bet it’s exactly the right height too. It was definitely worth waiting for.

    1. HI Marilyn,
The size of the cutting table if perfect for my doll clothes. If I have something bigger to do, I’ll just have to use the dining room table, but it’s really a nice size for smaller things.

I think if it was a couple inches higher it might have been better, but cutting out doesn’t usually take that long, so it’s not bothersome if it’s just a little bit short. The only thing I could have done, was raise up the dresser with some buns under each corner and made the whole thing higher.

I love this fabric too and can’t wait to show you the finished dress…
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thanks Suzanne,
I like ALL he does for me too and this is one I’ll really, really use!
      Thanks so very much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. It’s wonderful! Exactly the right design and so professionally done. It does belong in a wood craftsman’s as well as a decorating magazine. You are certainly a creative pair to come up with the concept and carry it off so well. What a lucky find the chest was, just the right height. Beautifully done, George.

Love the print, and the doll’s hair looks so natural. Can’t wait to see another Jeanne Marie creation.

    1. HI Susette,
I should send a picture of my new cutting table in to Handyman magazine… They are always showing pictures of ideas from their readers… I think I’ll surprise my hubby and do that and see what happens. :o)

Hopefully, I’ll find some sewing time today and get more done on the dress…
      Thanks Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. I agree with everyone on the design of the dresser’s use. Very clever as it works for several reasons!! Great ideas. George did a beautiful job on the fold out table.

I also agree with the girls that the dress could be Regency, most likely or possibly even Colonial? The print looks very elegant and I love the roses.

Last night I added a note on your blog from yesterday for Laura. Just wanted her to know. Thanks. I will send a picture of the re-wigged doll I did. I’m just an amateur but was pleased that I could re-wig one of my dolls. I am not very good at crafts as I attempted 2 other crafts this weekend and failed. So the re-wigging was a delight that actually worked!

    1. Thank you Paula,
My new fold up cutting table really is nice! I can use a chair under it too and it’s pretty nice to use for crafting projects if I want.
I saw your note to Laura last night and if you want her email address I can send it to you, or you can send the pictures of the re-wigged doll to me and I’ll see that she gets it. I’ve never re-wigged a doll so I’m intrigued too.
I saw a lady talking about a new way to replace eyes in the American Girl dolls yesterday. That’s something I’ve never tried either. She did 2 eyes in less than one minute… hmmm…
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Great job, Jeanne and George. It is so encouraging to me to see how efficiently you used the space-something that I think would work in our limited space. Thanks for sharing it.

Rebecca looks glorious in those colors/fabric. Like the others, I’m truly looking forward to seeing more of the reveal. You keep us in pins and needles, Jeanne!

    Blessings.

    1. HI Becky,
It worked so well, I told my hubby he needed a fold up work table in his garage! He said he has too many tools that have to stay on his table, and he didn’t think it would work… too bad…it’s pretty nifty if you ask me!
I’ll try to hurry on the dress so you all don’t have to wait very long…
      Thanks Becky,
      blessings, Jeanne

  6. Thanks so much for sharing the cutting table. I’m glad George used piano hinges. They work so well in many cases. Perfect way to hang your backgrounds too. If you didn’t have a background I can see your sister painting a beautiful mural on it. Or painting a window scene.
Love roses, and the surprise dress is exciting. Look forward to seeing it completed.

    1. Hi Joy,
My sister talked about having something pretty on the back side…I guess I could find a poster and give that a try or maybe I could stencil something on there…hmmmm…

I love this fabric too..the skirt shows off more of the pattern…just wait!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Follow up on Mini Maru Pals. I received the measurements and they are almost exactly the same as the Little Darlings.
    Little Darling Height 13″ Chest 6 7/8″ Waist 6 1/2″ Hip 6 7/8″ Foot 1 3/4″ x 3/4″
    Mini Maru Height 13.2″ Chest 7″ Waist 6 1/2 Hip 7″ Foot 1 3/4″

So I believe they would make a great friend for our LD’s and or a sewing model. And they can share shoes.

    1. HI Joy,
Thanks for the info on the Mini Maru dolls. I couldn’t stand it so I googled Maru Mini doll and found them…
Here is the link if anyone is interested…

Not that I’m going to get one, but I do like to look AND enable others! :o)

  8. Hi Jeanne,
Wow George is handy… I love the cutting table. How cool is that! Love the way it folds up and out of the way. You have a talented man there for sure. You girl friend are the queen of seekpeeks lol I like what I see so far. I think it’s going to be a beautiful gown …I can see a shawl around her shoulders to keep the chill at bay. Can’t wait to see more.
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. Joy
thank you so much for passing on the mini maru details. I am going to order one and save my poor little darling from getting pin pricked again

  9. Two creative designs — the multi-functional cutting table and Rebecca’s “rosy” new dress! You and George are both so accomplished at your crafts, Jeanne; it is always a pleasure to behold your work. Compliments to you both on your artistry!

It’s reassuring to see you sewing and posting again, Jeanne. May the precious moments you have to do what you love be a gift, calming your thoughts and soothing your soul. Blessings to you!

P.S. Since dolls bring us so much joy, Jeanne, I like to think of you as a “facilitator” rather than an “enabler.” It has a much more positive connotation! Hugs!

    1. Thank you Anne,
George and I do work well together. This morning we were priming the porch…bit by bit we get things done!
It feels almost normal to be in my sewing room…I do love sewing!
      So now I’m a “facilitator”…I like that! :o)
      Thank you Anne,
      Blessings, Jeanne
