Want a sneak peek at my Friday?

Just about my entire Friday was spent in the kitchen. Dishes and decorating, deviling and drizzling! I tried to get as much done toward the baby shower so I didn’t have to spend my whole Saturday on it. I did so many dishes my fingers got water logged…or it may have just been the slippery feel on them from all the icing I got on them when I decorated the little cakes.

I looked on Pinterest and found some baby shower deviled eggs that were pretty cute…they were little babies in bassinets and I wanted to give them a try…it was pretty tricky slicing the eggs so the bassinets were all in one piece, not two, like most of the ones I saw. I did end up with a few casualties…

I made my filling for the “blankets” and got ready to put them together. First I piped the filling too high so the faces were going to get lost “under the covers!”

I had to scrape out the filling and add just enough to hold the faces in place.

Oops, I forgot to tell you, the Pinterest eggs had little faces from pieces of cut up hot dogs. Some recipes said to add decorator icing for eyes, but I couldn’t get it to stick to the hot dog. I tried tiny little balls of black fondant and dug out holes to place them in, but it bled and my babies looked like they had two black eyes.

I finally just wanted to get the heads in there and get them finished, so I put them in and thought I’d figure out something for the eyes later…

Rebecca and I brainstormed for a while…peppercorns? Nope. Chia seeds? Nope. Poppyseeds? Nope. Finally Rebecca said,”Just add a bow, mom!” It isn’t really a bow, but just a pink flower added at the side. I finished piping the filling and spread it around a little. I had spent way too much time on them and it was time to move on.

I debated about adding just a curl to the head but decided I was sick of deviled eggs… so it’s just the bow, like Rebecca said!

It was time to make the buttercream frosting for decorating my cakes… I made one big batch and then divided it into several containers for the different colors I would be using.

Yes… my kitchen was once again a disaster…

My original plan was to just pipe some flowers on the tops of the cakes and see how pretty I could make them. I was going to make them all different, but again, time was getting the best of me, so I did a little “assembly line piping” and think they turned out pretty cute… I made 40 of them. They are much cuter than my “faceless” deviled egg babies. Here’s a sneak peek…

The secret to my perfectly square little cakes… help from “Aunt Debbie!” :o)

I also dipped some pink sugar wafer cookies in icing and then added some sprinkles… and I dipped some small pretzel rods in the icing and drizzled them with pink icing…

I got enough done that tomorrow I think I just have to make my baby bibs for Bithar… I have a red fingertip towel and I’m going to do a red, white and blue one with “Made in America” machine embroidered on it.

So that was my Friday… how was yours?

See you Monday morning,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Oh goodness, Jeanne, I can’t believe the patience you have! Those eggs—-just darling, but I know that must have been difficult to do! The cutting out part would have done me under! I know how difficult it is to slice them in half, much less turn them into little bassinets! And all that peeling! How did you do that without all the gouges in the egg whites? Any tips on that? But they turned out SO CUTE, and there is no doubt that they are tiny babies, eyes or no eyes!

You are human!! I could not imagine baking all those little cakes, then doing all that fancy icing, after all the eggs! Good for you, and those cakes look just darling! Bithar is going to be amazed! I am amazed!!

Well, I will say that, yes, things like that do mess up the kitchen!!! Understatment of the day! But look what you accomplished!

My Saturday? Went to Hobby Lobby, grocery store, watered plants, and tried to stay inside as much as possible! The heat index was 105 degrees, and the humidity oppressive! How’s that for fun??

    1. Hi Linda,
As far as the eggs go, the fresher the egg, the harder it is to peel, so I had to buy eggs from the store in order to peel them smoothly.
Rebecca went EEEWWW when she saw I put the flower on the eggs using a dab of icing…she started calling them my “sweet and sour eggs!” Oh well…take the flower off…
I know it was terribly hot yesterday and when I went outside to go to the visitation, I thought I’d melt right into my hose…
Glad you had a productive day…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. I was about to comment yesterday when the electricity went out. I thought it was due to the hot weather but it turned out to be a Mylar balloon caught in a high-tension electrical wire, a problem most prevalent during June, graduation and wedding month. The dollhouse is amazing. What great fun, and the creativity certainly runs in the family.

I can never believe your dedication when you set your mind to a project! It’s going to get finished, not matter what. As Linda said, I can’t believe getting cradle shapes out of all those eggs. And those little cakes! I, too, am amazed at your cake-decorating abilities. The doggie cupcakes pop up on my Screen Saver occasionally and always make me smile. Thanks again for sharing.

    1. Hi Susette,
It sounds like the electricity thing happens pretty often…the worst is when you are baking something…
Rebecca asked me yesterday, when I was in the middle of all my “decorating?” “Why can’t we just be like other people and buy a cake or a gift?” Before I could answer, she said “We just can’t!” Then we laughed…
I do enjoy the cake decorating and would love to take a class in it to learn how to do things the right way…not just my way…
      Thanks Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Amazing kitchen work, Jeanne. As stated, once you set your mind to something……we enjoy the outcome!

Our Friday consisted of 4 family members arriving from out of state, and 6 of us met them at a wedding we all attended. The wedding was outside, the best man was late (2 hours), so we all sat in the shade as much as we could and chatted with other guests until the best man arrived and the ceremony began. We were grateful that the temperature was not quite 90 degrees and that there was plenty of water to keep hydrated. All in all, it turned out to be a lovely time.

    Blessings.

    1. Hi Becky,
Oh, I bet the best man felt awful for being late…I hope it was something like a late plane arrival or a missed bus that caused him to be late, and not just “running behind…”
I guess the extra time while you all waited gave you time to get more “visiting” in!
I’m glad you had a nice time in spite of the hot weather… I hope the bride was near a fan, so she didn’t look wilted for the pictures…
      Thanks Becky,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Wow, you’ve been a busy little camper. All those party treats. How special.
Was over 100 yesterday and maybe slightly cooler today, so we’ve been trying to beat the heat. No air conditioning usually needed here because of the marine influence. We have three fans bringing in the cool morning air right now. Then everything gets closed up as the sun arrives.
    Laundry day here. Oh goodie!
    Hope the shower is wonderful.

    1. Hi Joy,
I like to be in houses where the wind is blowing through the windows. It sounds wonderful to me…unless it gets as hot inside as it is outside…
It sounds like you had a nice day….until you mentioned “the laundry!” Ugh!!
      Thank you. Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I was wondering about the lacy white icing on the cakes — thanks so much for sharing that time saving decorating tip.
How you got your eggs to center their yolks so that they could become cradles, I don’t know. The yolks in the eggs I cook are never centered. What did you use for the pink bows?
I love the idea of the “Made in America” bib and look forward to seeing it Monday.
Stay well and cool and get some rest before the party.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
Yes, those Fancy Cakes are so good by themselves, and then with a little decoration, they somehow taste even better. I used them once for Christmas and decorated them with poinsettias and once I did Valentine cakes using them.
Not all my eggs were perfectly centered, and a few had to discarded because the “bassinet hood” was too flimsy.
You can read my comment to Linda to see what I decorated the eggs with…EEEWWW.
Ok…it’s time to get thosr bibs made…
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. I just love the darling eggs! They are almost too cute to eat. The little square cakes beautiful. I am sure you will have a wonderful shower.
    Have a great day!
    Take care.

    1. Hi Charlotte,
Thank you for your kind compliments on my goodies for the baby shower. I know Bithar will be blessed…that was my purpose for doing this… a friend is making pink punch and I have little rubber ducks to float in it…she’s also making a spinach dip!
We should have a good time.
      Thank you Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Joyful Giver
She devils, and drizzles, and decorates, too
Her creative skills will see it through
There isn’t anything she can’t do
    With a love for others that’s oh-so-true!

What delicious-looking treats, Jeanne! As with your sewing, you put so much heart into your event-planning. Bithar will surely be blessed by your efforts. Thanks for sharing a preview of your shower goodies with us. Happy bib stitching today, and enjoy the shower tomorrow. Hope you all stay cool.

    1. Hi Anne,
Oh what a clever one and oh how sweet
Anne made a ditty that’ll be hard to beat
But I must remind you, Oh yes it is true
There’s plenty this Jeanne just cannot do.

I’m glad you enjoyed my baby shower preview…
      Thanks Anne,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Jeanne, I knows this is late and the shower tomorrow, but what about a little piece of pimento instead of icing bows? That would go with the eggs better than icing!

    1. Hi Linda…that’s a good idea, but I don’t have any…but I’ll see if I can find something more savory for an accent…
      Good thinking!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. My sister was trying to think of possible eyes (for next time) and also thought, only for a second, of pimento, and then she thought of all those little red eyes glaring out and decided not. I thought of tinted mayonnaise for the bows, but I’m not sure it would be stiff enough. Between us all, we’ll think of something for next time you want to do this.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
I can’t believe you and Linda were trying to think of things to help me out!
      TRUE FRIENDS!!!
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. Think of a plate of eggs with all those little red eyes (some probably would have gone crooked) glaring out at the guests. I even wondered about wasabi paste, so I looked it up and it’s green, not to mention that the horseradish-like heat might have been an unwanted surprise. I’m nearly sure we’ll think of something before next time.

  10. Hi Jeanne,
You are just so clever. I think everything looks yummy. I’m pretty sure no one will really care that the eggs aren’t Pinterest perfect. They look great to me. After all everyone is there to celebrate a new little life coming soon.
Soooo …I’ve been thinking what about black olives cut small. It just popped in my head as I was typing ….They would maybe work for little eyes. Love the little cake short cut …I’m stealing idea!
    Have a great Sunday!
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. HI Ingrid,
I’m like you… I don’t think anyone is going to care either… I guess they could take the little icing flower off and save it as a mint for later…after they’ve eaten the egg… :o)
The hard part is getting whatever it is you use for eyes poked into the hot dog. Not only is it slippery, it sort of pushes back at you…
It’s almost 11:30…they are still in the frig with pink flowers on them, and they’ll probably end up that way… :o)
I will have a great Sunday and hope you do too!
      Thank you Ingrid,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. That’s going to be such a fun shower. My idea for the adorable bassinets is maybe tinting sour cream pink? Love the idea of letting Debbie mhelp with the cakes. They are so uniform and look so professional! It’s just not fun until you have every dish in the kitchen used ? Is it ? I grids idea for using black olives is a good one.
Friday was day 2 of our garage sale. My sister, my daughter, and I . Every time we do it I say it is the last time but then we always do it again….but we giggle , meet all kinds of people, clean out our closets, and visit with all the neighbors. It was beastly hot the first day but the last 2 days were very nice. My garage is clean, our treasurers have found new homes so everyone is happy!
Enjoy the shower…hope you take pictures!

    1. Hi Kathie,
Well, you all certainly have given me lots of ideas ….for the next time! I’m afraid these baby eggs are going to served with pink flowers as I’ve called it quits on any more on the shower…
I guess if I had thought about it, I could have just used something dark like a black olive for the whole face, since Bithar is from Haiti and dark skinned.
      ..too bad I don’t have any whole black olives…Oh well…like I said…next time…
Congrats on your yard sale !!! Doesn’t it feel good when you have all that stuff purged from your house?
      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  12. Earlier you said Rebecca said, “Why couldn’t we just….?”
Several years ago we were leaving a shower where one of the hostesses had been praising the bakery where they got their cake, and my mother said, quietly, to me, “We would have baked our own.” Years ago we would have done it to save money, but later we would have done it for the taste. For my father’s 90 birthday, we did go to a restaurant that had private rooms, because there were a lot of us, but my sister Susan brought 2 German chocolate cakes (original recipe, separated eggs and all), and cut slices for everyone, including the waitstaff, who were thrilled that we shared and impressed by the cake.

I wonder about the sour cream Kathie mentioned. It separates, but if you poured off the extra liquid, it would be thicker, and you’d have to take it to the party, tinted and packed in cold packs, and add the flowers at the last moment. You’d have to try this in advance to be sure it would be stiff enough and that the color wouldn’t run, but it would tint either pink or blue quite nicely.

By the way, when I’m straining things like that, I line my strainer with coffee filters.

Happy Sunday and have a great shower.

    1. HI Marilyn,
I am done “showering” and thank you for all your ideas… I’m not going to forget about all these ideas for the basinette babies…and will keep an eye out for something to use next time. They were a hit at the shower and I personally didn’t even flinch when I ate mine… pink iced bow and all…down the hatch!
Bithar was truly blessed and so grateful… We had a really big group and saw some of the sweetest little baby things!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne
