Using checked fabrics and trims on your doll dresses…

Before today’s post, I wanted to thank my newest subscribers for joining my blog. I wish I had thanked everyone as they joined up till now, but I didn’t…sorry. Here are the newest ladies to join in on the fun we have here… Louise, Ingrid, Terry and Dianne! Thank you very much for joining. I hope you enjoy your visits each day with everyone here.

Yesterday (HERE) I showed you some of my dresses where I used tiny checked fabrics and trims to embellish my doll dresses. I had too many to show in one post, so here are the rest of them today. Whenever I see checks…trim or fabric, I add it to my stash. You can never have too many colors or sizes.

This is my blonde Bitty Bethany in a fun, summery red and green dress with a bodice done in a tiny micro check.

The tiniest little doll I’ve ever sewn for, at 7 1/2″, Riley Kish is showing off her Easter dress from a few years ago. I made her bodice in a pretty aqua micro check that picked up the colors in the fabric used for her skirt.

Bitty Bethany shows how you can brighten up even a black dress. I love this tiny aqua check with the black fabric.

To decorate Rebecca’s Regency dress, I added a bit of contrast using the tiny blue check on her sash and the ruffle on the bonnet. I think it’s very pretty together.

Just a simple black and white checked band added to this red dress made all the difference.

Instead of just using a plain red ribbon or band, I decided even though this fabric was busy, the checks on the sash and the cuffs worked fine for this dress. Sometimes a busy print can use a check…this time it worked perfectly.

Sometimes even the tiniest touch of checked trim makes your dresses so special.

You may have thought a white bodice was the only thing that would work with the “yellow and white chickie fabric,” but I think the tiny black and white micro check was much more interesting…

Yesterday you saw Elin in a little dress using this same fabric and trim, but today here’s Millie in her version of it, with the trim used in a totally different way.

…and last up is little Riley in her lavender and white dress with ruffles in checked fabric. Isn’t she the sweetest thing?

I hope you enjoyed all the “checked” accents on my doll dresses.

See you tomorrow,

  1. Good morning, Jeanne. Looking at all of your cute dresses with checked accents made me think if I have ever used checked fabrics, and I can only remember one time. I will definitely keep checked fabric front and center in my brain now that I’ve seen how cute they look with prints. Hope you have a productive day, Jeanne!

    1. Morning Cindy,
I see you survived the thunderstorms last night… I’m assuming they hit you up north?
Thanks for your kind words about my “checked” dresses. I bet you’ll never look at gingham the same way again.
Yes, I hope to be productive today… I NEED to be productive today!
I woke up in the middle of the night to the storm and grabbed my ipad on my nightstand.
I saw your latest post…cute, cute, cute…I’m going to comment on it on your site though…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. I love checked fabrics and trims too Jeanne. You always embellish your dresses with just the right touch to make them adorable.

    1. Hi Marsha,
I’ll give you a personal welcome to my blog. I looked at the newest names and they were all in late March or early April, and you joined in late February.. I almost included you, but decided to just do the “most” recent. Anyway, WELCOME!
Thanks so much for your sweet comments. What a blessing to know how to sew right? Sometimes I wonder what I’d be doing if I hadn’t learned how to sew…
Have a wonderful day, Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Jeanne, I am amazed at how you put different fabrics together and it works perfectly! Do you have a rule you go by? When I am surrounded by fabric in the store I don’t know where to begin…I’m totally overwhelmed!

Love the checks in all the outfits!

    1. HI Jane,
I don’t really have a plan or a rule that I go by when mixing and matching my fabrics. It just sort of jumps out at me which fabrics can go together. Just pick a main fabric and then start adding smaller prints and ones with the same color families to the lot. I don’t know if that helps or not… maybe I could do a post on it and see if I can explain it better.
Thanks for your kind words about it though…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Hello Jeanne!
Can these dresses with the check trim be any cuter? I think you’ve squashed all other ways to enhance these adorable outfits. Your work is incredible and even though I say this all the time, true, YOUR sewing creativity never ceases to amaze me.
You said in an earlier note above “you wonder what you would have done if you hadn’t learned to sew”. The answer would be, you would be doing even more wonderful, thoughtful things for other people as you do now! You are an example of what we should all be like. Bless all of you ladies who do unto others!
Of course, if you didn’t sew, I’d have none of your beautiful clothes for my dollies !! 🙁

    1. Hi Paula,
I’m so glad the Lord blessed me the talent to sew…and especially to sew for sweet little dolls. What could be more fun than that? The only thing I need more of is TIME! I always seem to use up my lot of it and have to wait until the next day to get more!
Thank you so much for the kind comments you sent my way. I am truly blessed by all the dear friends and customers I have made since starting this blog… I’m glad you are one of them.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I remember using tiny gingham checks with prints for some Riley dresses, but I don’t think I’ve used any since then. I’ll have to dig through my stash because you’ve inspired me. Again! Thanks, Jeanne!

    1. HI Jevne,
I think there are lots of ladies digging through their fabric stashes looking for tiny little checks to use on their next dresses! Glad to have inspired you!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. As always beautiful. I love the checks and fabrics together.
Is it hard to sew for Riley Kish?
Thanks so much for your posts.
    Judi

    1. HI Judi,
Thanks so much for your kind comments. It is a little bit tedious, but I pretty well had it mastered when I sewed for her and didn’t mind it. Setting in sleeves and doing collars were probably the most challenging…
My pleasure to give you something to read each day.
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thanks so much Kathie…
Wow, you don’t like purple but Riley’s dress grabs you… that’s a compliment I’ll take!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Well of course I love Patsy’s dress with just the touch of check fabric..just the prettiest dress. *Smile* I think I will try to make a dress like Millie is wearing that is very pretty!

    1. HI Regina,
It’s always fun for me when I show something that inspires someone else. Have fun…
      blessings, Jeanne
