The Lavender Dress for American Girl dolls plus a little more about Kaye Wiggs…

You’re going to laugh… I just know you are. I’ve only gotten the ruffles sewn on the lavender dress and some handwork done on the inside of the dress. It’s still not done. The ribbon around her waist is just tied around her but not fastened. The button is held on with a straight pin. The back doesn’t have snaps and buttons sewn on yet, the bonnet’s not made, the necklace that I talked to Rebecca about making isn’t done yet, and a few other things I’m planning to do aren’t done, but it’s more than I had done 3 days ago, so I guess I shouldn’t complain. I hate to show you another picture of an unfinished dress but I am…just so you’ll know I AM working toward getting it done.

Want to know one reason why I didn’t get it done….

Oh sure…now you’re asleep!! Make a liar out of me!!
Remy has been like a little wild puppy today…into everything. When you take him outside he eats everything. This was not a good year to get a puppy with all these Cicada’s on the ground… dead, alive, and crispy shells. He doesn’t seem to care how they come, he just likes to get them in his mouth, so you spend half the time walking him digging dead critters out of his mouth!
When he’s inside he’s chewing on the furniture, finding cords and chewing on them, and he’s destroyed the bottom of Scruff’s old bed, pulling the foam out of it. My hubby has started calling him Sir Chews-A-Lot! (just for fun…) I’m sure he’ll grow out of it, but it sure keeps me busy looking after him.

About that picture above…isn’t that funny how he gets halfway out of the bed and sleeps. He does that all the time.

Someone asked a question when I did the post on Kaye Wiggs dolls (HERE) so I thought I might answer it here so this isn’t such a short post. Kaye makes quite a few dolls that I call “Fantasy” dolls. They have elf and faun ears and sometimes they come in colors other than human skin tones… like pinks, grays, blues, greens, etc. I thought I’d show you some of them just so you’d understand what I was talking about when I mentioned them.

These are two of her Nelly dolls that are made with faun ears and the hooves. The hooves can be interchanged with regular feet like on dolls in the next picture.

Here’s one of her translucent green dolls…

…and here are a few of her other dolls in a few assorted colors…

Here is Nelly in a white skin tone…

Now just so you don’t think all her dolls are fantasy, here is Nelly about as normal as can be…even with freckles…

…and here are the two pictures that were used when Nyssa was up for pre-order. When I was pining away for sweet Nyssa, I bet I looked at these two pictures several hundred times. I just couldn’t get enough of her. I’m so glad Kaye was nice enough to sell me one of her Nyssa’s.

  1. Check with your vet to be certain but eating cicadas might actually be a healthy treat for your adorable puppy!

    1. HI Linda Marie,
My hubby wouldn’t be so concerned about the Cicada’s but he’s not sure if they were around pesticides and such… I don’t know how Remy stomachs the live ones…fluttering as they go down…ICK!!!
      Thanks, Jeanne

  2. The dress is looking good so far. Aren’t puppies just like toddlers? Into everything as long as they are awake. LOL

I would love to have gotten a Nyssa, but wasn’t into the dolls back then or have the funds. What a nice gesture for Kaye to send you one of hers. 🙂

    1. Thank you Christine,
I’m hoping for progress on the dress today!
Yes, puppies are pretty much like toddlers…into anything and everything!

I was very blessed to have gotten one of Kayes’ Nyssa’s. Never in a million years would I have guessed she would sell me one of hers… and she was the one who offered her to me!!
      Thanks Christine,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Jeanne I did a LOL when I saw the photo of Remy sleeping and your funny dialog.
Nyssa is still my favorite of all my dolls. Hope you get thru those cicadas soon!
    God Bless

    1. HI Marsha,
I always loved seeing your Nyssa in the dresses you made for her…lovely every time!!!!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Oh, Jeanne, I am so sorry you cannot get any sewing done. We’ve always used a crate for puppies and when they are out of the crate there are always a pair of eyes on them to keep them from getting into trouble. That’s just what we were told to do and it has worked for us every time. Their crate turns into their safe and cozy place that they end up liking a lot. My golden still sleeps in hers with the door open. Sorry, I know you didn’t ask for any advice…just wanted to share with you what has worked for us.
Yes, lucky you for talking Kaye into selling you one of her Nyssas. For some reason it has taken me a while to fall in love with BJD dolls and back then they didn’t appeal to me. Now, I love them.
Hope your day goes smoother than yesterday. BTW, your dress is looking beautiful even though it is not done. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Good luck with Remy. I am in know way an expert, but if you have any questions, I’d be happy to share my puppy experiences with you.

    1. HI Cindy,
So you don’t have a separate little bed for your puppies when they are young? It’s “in the crate” or “out with someone watching them?” I’ll have to talk to my hubby about this…

Yes, Cindy, I was very blessed to get my Nyssa from Kaye herself. How it ever happened is still a wonder to me…

I appreciate your advice and may be asking for more….THANKS!
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. Jeanne, the crate is their bed too. You can make it cozy for them, blankets inside and/or over the top. You can put the crate next to your bed at first (or always) to give them comfort at night. Most dogs like the den-like feel of a crate after they get used to it. This works really well if you have to leave on an errand too. We put our chihuahua’s crate inside of a metal penned area in the kitchen, so he could get up and move around, use the puppy pad, or have some water.

  5. So much to comment on today..the lavender dress is just beautiful! Remy is adorable sleeping half way off his bed. Such a cutie! Wow, those hooves are something else! Your Nyssa is the prettiest of all of the dolls..love her in the pink dress with blue eyes.

    1. Hi Regina,
Thanks so much for commenting today! That day I took Nyssa outside was a fun photo shoot. She is pretty isn’t she?
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. LOVE the lavender dress. The green belt is so vivid and adds even more of spring. It is just gorgeous. Don’t be hard on yourself for not getting it done. You are a very busy lady and you do so many nice things for other people. You will get the lavender dress done in time.
What a sweet little puppy sleepin’ away. Funny how he sleeps with his little head resting outside the bed.
By the way, our little puppy, Holly, brought into the house, a dead bird, dead worms and little sticks that she chews up in pieces and leaves for us to clean up. When my husband pulls weeds, we find them chewed up throughout the house. Holly behaves very well, except when she drags this “stuff” into the house. Other than that, she is just a delightful, comical and sweet puppy.
    Have a good day, Jeanne.
    Blessings

    1. Hi Paula,
I’m trying to just relax and not be so set on what I get done each day. I accomplish lots each day but “grade” myself sometimes on whether or not it was what I “wanted” to get done.

I guess all puppies just like to explore and carry things in their mouths.. A friend of mine had a cat that used to bring dead mice up and drop them at the door. I think it thought of the mice as a prize!
      Thanks so much, Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Nyssa is really cute, Nelly with the freckles is adorable, and Layla is the doll I would love to be able to afford, but I don’t understand the ears and the hooves and the colors.

However, I do understand lavender dresses on AG dolls and yours is beautiful. And I do understand it not being done, you have a life other than dolls and that’s a good thing. If you hadn’t told us we wouldn’t have known the dress wasn”t done. The green belt with the amethysts and emeralds really sets it off. (Your dolls have such expensive jewelry.) lol

Question if you don’t mind….are both layers of skirt gathered and sewn on at the waistline? I was trying make a similar dress for a much smaller doll and I sewed the underskirt onto tulle to eliminate so much bulk at the waist. I got the tulle too long (or the underskirt too short), didn’t have enough more fabric to fix it and had to change to plan B.

Some puppies chew on everything and some don’t. Have you tried some rawhide bones as an alternative to the furniture and electrical cords? Do you have a fenced in area, other than your garden, where he can run? (get him a rabbit to chase) Tiring them out usually helps and puppies don’t want to go for a walk, they want to run. He looks pretty tuckered out in his bed. Puppies are cute and fun and a LOT of work and most of it naturally falls on the person who is home. Now who would that be?

    1. HI Jevne,
Like I said a few days ago…there are dolls for everybody…those who like Elf dolls and those who don’t!
Thanks so much for your sweet comments about the lavender dress. It’s a slow work in progress but I’m hoping to get some headway made on it again today.
The skirt is in 2 layers. I made the first one the shorter layer and sewed it to the bodice just like I would have if it had been the length I wanted it. The second layer was cut so that it extended about 2 inches below the first ruffle and I did add a very thin sheer white fabric at the top with the lavender gathered to it. Like you did, I wanted fewer gathers and less bulk at the waist. I made a note and will try to post a picture or 2 of how I did it.

We do have some little puppy teething sticks and rings. We were talking last night about fencing in a little area where he can run free in the yard. He’s sleeping right now…that’s how I’m able to answer my comments!!! Better hit that sewing room right now…
      Thanks Jevne,
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. A fenced area will be a gift to Remy. Sounds like George has a job to put at the top of his list. I never examined if I had accomplished what I planned for the day but always planned the day’s work before I got up. Sewing was the prize after work was done.

        1. HI Jan,
I always consider myself fortunate if I can squeeze in some sewing time in the day. Lately it’s been a bit too hectic and I really miss it when I can’t sew! I bet you feel the same way…
          Blessings, Jeanne

  8. I am finally getting to comment on your blog of the day! Like I mentioned in yesterday’s post, which I commented on just this afternoon, we have had problems with our internet connection, and a mouse or something got into the connector box, and we have been offline for almost 3 days! It’s nice to be back!!

Oh, that dress will be adorable! I love the colors and that green sash! Can’t wait to see it finished!

Remy—-what a cutie when he is sleeping! He’s cute awake too, but so cute when he is half in and out of the bed! I was wondering if you are still under siege with those cicadas. Poor you! Our cats have brought voles, mice, grasshoppers and one time even a bunny into the house! The bunny was perfectly fine although the others were not, but boy, was it hard to catch running all over the house!!

Those Kaye Wiggs dolls are really different but I can’t imagine getting a doll with those pointy ears, and hooves, plus in colors! I’m trying to figure out what a person would do with them? Kind of scary!!

    1. HI Linda,
I saw that your internet was out…so sorry… that’s like one of the worst things that can happen nowadays! I’m glad they got it fixed so quickly…silly mouse or squirrel…(maybe it was a herd of Cicada’s!)
I’ve almost got the dress finished and hope to show pictures of it tomorrow!

Yes, they are still flying everywhere and still all in the grass. It was on the news tonight about them… now they are saying they may last 8 weeks instead of just 6! UGH!

Sometimes the Elf dolls have cute faces, but I’ve never and probably never will own one of them… I’m just a human at heart through and through.
      Thanks so much Linda,
      Glad to have you back…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Remy is so cute…and so time consuming! I’m sure he will get better in time.
I think the green sash on the lavender dress is perfect. Good luck getting more sewing time!

    1. HI Kathie,
Thanks for thinking Remy is cute… we think so too and I do know that the puppy stage won’t last forever… but I may turn white headed before he becomes a teenager!
I did find some sewing time today and it felt wonderful!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. Well, I can tell the lavender dress will be beautiful! I had to smile when I saw the picture of that cute puppy. Not only is he adorable, but the way he is laying makes his little tummy look so round! By the way, I also enjoyed the wedding pictures– beautiful venue and beautiful wedding party.

    1. Thanks so much Carolyn, for all your kind comments about the doll dress, Remy and the wedding! I’m glad you enjoyed seeing them.
      Blessings, Jeanne
