Silk Tie-Dyed Eggs and a bit of a reveal for Patsy…

This evening a friend stopped by with a “craft” project she had done and wanted to show me. Beth was telling me about it Sunday and I had to google it when I got home. It was that intriguing to me and it’s something I don’t remember seeing before. Basically it’s taking an egg, cutting a small piece of silk (like a man’s necktie) and placing that silk fabric right side down against the egg, then using a twist tie and securing it at the ends, trying to make it as smooth as you possibly can. Then you wrap another piece of cloth around it to hold it in place. You put them in a pot of water, with 3 Tablespoons of white vinegar in the water and bring the water to a boil. Turn the heat down and simmer them for 20 minutes. Remove them, let them cool and remove the silk fabric. If you want them shiny, wipe them with vegetable oil.

You can also poke a small hole in the end of the egg and a tiny hole in the other, tying to puncture the yolk. Then you blow in the small end and the insides of the egg will come out. This way you’ll have an egg you can keep instead of having to eat it… or throw it away…

Here are Beth’s eggs the first time she tried it… she blew the insides of hers out so she could keep them…

Isn’t it incredible how the design stays on the egg shells?

CIMG9359

Wouldn’t it be fun to give someone a dozen pretty eggs? When they are arranged just right, you don’t see the holes…

I found lots of pictures on Pinterest by typing in Silk tie eggs or Silk Tie-dye Easter Eggs… and I also googled Silk tie eggs and found this fun Martha Stewart Video and also just the directions. You can see that HERE. I wanted to share this with you in case you wanted to give it a try before Easter Sunday.

I absolutely HAD to do some catch-up in my house, so I didn’t get too far on Patsy’s outfit… but I’ll show you what I managed to finish…

It’s not much to show, but at least you know I’m getting there…

See you tomorrow,

  1. Those eggs are beautiful, Jeanne! I have never heard of that either, but I think it might be fun to try—if I have time! Michael has lots of ties that he used to wear everyday for work, and they are just hanging in the closet. I don’t think I have dyed eggs for a few years now, mainly because there are just 2 people here to eat them, and for sure my hubby doesn’t care to go out and hunt for eggs Easter morning! My granddaughters do, when they come ovor Easter, but we use the plastic eggs now, yeah, so convenient!

When I was small, our neighbor, an elderly German woman, made the most intricate and gorgeous eggs every Easter. Actually she started way before Easter and painted them with teensy, tiny brushes. Of course she gave us some eggs too, and one year she made Girl Scout eggs, painted to look like us! She made tiny stands for the eggs with the Brownie uniform, complete with a little handkerchief in the pocket! Then again, some were just beautiful, intricate designs. They all were hollow, so of course, they didn’t last forever at our house!

Oh I know, you HAVE to get the housework done with Easter and spring here now! you are not alone in that, dear Jeanne Marie! Meanwhile, Patsy can ride her tricycle! She’s having fun!

    1. HI Linda,
I know…aren’t those eggs just the most fun craft? I hope you might find time to do some…Beth brought me some of her silk this morning and left it on my front door handle… I might have to find time to make a few at least…just to give it a try…

Wow, those eggs your neighbor used to make sound incredible… and they were the hard boiled egg kind…not hollowed out so you could save them? That’s even more incredible…

Yes, there’s always housework..and today was a big day at the Food Pantry… it was Open House and they invited people from the city to come in and see what goes on there… it was a busy day so I got my 10,000 steps in pretty early in the day…

Rebecca cooked dinner while I did dishes and now it’s time to work on Patsy’s outfit…

      Thanks so much Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. HI Jan,
Yes, I really need to make at least one play outfit for my girls to stand in so they aren’t always in their undies… :o)
      Thanks Jan,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Patsy’s dress is going to be beautiful. I really like the color combo as well as the prints.

What an interesting way to “paint” eggs. You keep us on your toes with creativity!

    Take care.

    1. HI Becky,
      Well…. Patsy’s next modeling time might not be a dress.. might not… I’m not 100% sure…
I like the two prints together too… they matched up so well but were on two different fabric shelves.
I am going to try those eggs, even if it’s after Easter that I get to them.. it just seems so neat to transfer your fabric to the eggs…
      Thank you Becky,
      Blessings, Jeanne

If Patsy raised one arm to wave, it might not be obvious that her arms don’t bend. Her legs work pretty well on the pedals. I think you’re going to manage some nice pictures for this outfit. You have only one day and 12 hours before the coral dress auction closes.

The eggs are quite amazing. If you put the pin in the small end, the mark would hardly show. There must be some lovely craft thing that could cover the larger hole in the larger end — even a sticky silver star would do but there are probably some sort of lacy things that would work even better. What do you think — would you spray paint an egg box to hold them?

Sometimes you can find Ukrainian Easter eggs or even better, wooden eggs decorated in that style. I checked Google — lots of information. They seem to be called pysanky.

Yesterday was definitely spring with lawns turning green and 68 degrees, I think. This morning we have about 6″ of snow so far. Someone called this Colorado’s “ski one day, tennis the next” weather.

    1. HI Marilyn,
That’s a good idea about Patsy waving with the one hand… so you might see her waving in my final pictures…
As far as Rebecca’s coral dress… no bids yet…Yikes! Ebay has made my change my category to clothing and accessories instead of the whole American Girl category and my hits on the dress are way down… but I don’t want to put it in the wrong category and risk another auction being pulled… so I’ll wait and see…

I know we blew out eggs like this before when I was little but didn’t use the silk fabric on them… just dyed them and our holes were barely seen…if I remember right… I think I could come up with something to hide the hole…

I saw on the news tonight about Colorado’s woes with the new snowfall that you’ve gotten. I sure don’t envy you all out there. I hope you were stocked up on what you needed before it hit… Southern Illinois has about the same kind of weather and we saw, “If you don’t like the weather one day, stick around for tomorrow, you might like it better.”

      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Patsy looks so cute riding the tricycle. I love the combination of fabrics you are using. Those eggs are very different…. I love the orange one.

    1. HI Regina,
Patsy’s had fun riding around on the tricycle all day… :o) I’m glad you are liking her outfit…
I like the orange egg too… I can’t believe how the print transfers to the eggs…
      Thanks Regina,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Hi Jeanne,
Love Patsy’s dress combo, it’s going to be so sweet. The silk tie eggs is something I’ve seen before looks like a fun project if you can find the right color ties. I might check out second hand stores for ties and give it a try next Easter. I am also spring cleaning here. It’s that time of year.

    Have a great day! Ingrid

    1. HI Ingrid,
I’m glad you’re liking Patsy’s outfit so far… me too!
I was too busy to go the Thrift store today too, but the next time I’m in there, you can bet I’ll be looking for silk ties… or colorful silk linings in jackets…

I hope you’ve made more headway in your cleaning than I have… today I worked at the Food Pantry for 5 hours and didn’t get much done here at home… oh well… tomorrow!

      Thanks so much Ingrid,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Oh, Patsy looks so cute on the trike! Love it. The outfit is coming along too.
Those eggs bring back memories. At the school carnival each year, the most popular booth sold hollowed out eggs filled with confetti. The idea was to crack one over the head of someone unsuspecting. Can you imagine the lawsuits today? Injury or salmonella? That booth made a lot of money for the PTA though.

    1. HI Joy,
Patsy is enjoying her new trike…
The eggs you used to have at your school carnival sound very interesting… confetti, huh? and then smash them on someone’s head? Very interesting indeed! How fun that it was the most popular booth… :o)
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Patsy looks so cute on her trike. I think her outfit, with the two different materials together will be adorable.
How interesting on the eggs. Very pretty.
Gee, we won’t be home for Easter this year with the kids. Easter is early it seems. We always colored eggs but just with the color kit.
Speaking of Easter and eggs: We inherited a white ceramic basket filled with ceramic hand painted and decorated eggs from my husband’s side of the family. The eggs were decorated beautifully. I always loved seeing it at my mother-in-law’s home, so it was special to have received it later on. We always put it out for Easter.
I also put out other yearly Easter decorations- the hand made things my children made years ago in school; like the empty cave the three women came upon early in the morning, made out of construction paper- the cave door actually hung freely with tape and then there were the paper crosses the kids colored with their little hands.

    1. HI Paula,
I’m hoping for good things to come from Patsy’s outfit.. I’m trying something different, but might have to change it… :o/
We always used those Easter Eggs coloring kits too… every so often we’d branch out and do melted crayons or that white waxy crayon that kept the dye from taking in the places where you drew it on the egg.
I think I’ll get out the cards the kids made when they were little and make some kind of a display with them… thanks for the ideas…
Have a great Easter wherever you end up spending it…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. HI there, the eggs are beautiful, Patsy looks adorable. I am so excited I think y Patsy comes tomorrow. Can’t wait to see the outfit completed. I am trying to get a Little Darling doll, not sure how quick that will happen. Thanks!!

    1. HI Robin,
I bet you won’t sleep tonight knowing your Patsy is coming tomorrow… how exciting!!
Patsy’s are much easier and much less expensive to find… but I do hope you find your very own Little Darling one of these days…
      Thanks so much Robin,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Patsy is going to be darling!
Have fun Easter cleaning…you know it will feel good when it’s done?
    Those eggs are amazing!!

    1. Thanks Kathie,
      I hope you’re right about Patsy…I’m trying something different…
Easter cleaning…? It will feel good when I get more things done in one day… it’s been busy ever since I said I was cleaning… oh well, cleaning is an ongoing thing I guess.
Thanks so much for thoughts, Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

When I wrote earlier, I thought we had about 6″ of snow. When I shoveled just before the second power out, it was about 18″. I think it may be done now until Friday and Saturday. Now for some hot food while I can still heat it. It’s important to remember that these late snows mean green grass all summer.
    Stay warm, wherever you are.

    1. HI Marilyn,
18″ of snow? Seriously? I’m so glad we had sunshine and warm weather today. Rebecca was wearing shorts in the house with flip flops…
Maybe that will be you soon…
I have been warm today… wish you were warm too…but you’re in the frigid zone so maybe next week!
      Thanks again Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. I don’t know if it’s just me or if everybody else encountering issues with your blog.
It seems like some of the text on your content are running off
the screen. Can someone else please provide feedback and let me know if this is happening to them too?
This may be a problem with my web browser because I’ve had
    this happen previously. Thank you

    1. HI Handle,
No one has told me anything about the text being messed up. I have had a few issues with the pictures being sideways, but I think that’s because the pictures are taken using the camera turned sideways.
Maybe someone will see this and comment…
Thanks for bringing it to my attention…
      Blessings, Jeanne
