Silk Ribbon all the way from Japan…and a few projects…

A few years ago a dear friend of mine went on a Missions trip to Japan and when she returned, she surprised me with a bundle of all different colors of silk ribbon! I don’t know how many hundreds of yards she brought me, but I’ve still got lots left and I’ve used plenty already.

I used to make “brooches” and wear them at my neckline, or on a lapel, but they are a bit out of style right now. I still thought I’d show them to you. They are so dainty and sweet looking. My hubby used to call my dresses “country romantic” so you can see how these would have fit in. I’m not so much that way now, but it sure was in my past! Here are a few pictures of some of my silk ribbon embroidery on a few projects. The brooches look huge as I see them in my pictures, but actually they are about an inch and a half wide.

Here is a little picture I did years and years ago…and yes, it needs to be washed as it’s gotten dusty, but I just wanted to show you the design I did mostly.

…and who remembers how popular it used to be to do silk ribbon embroidery on your clothing? This design is done above a pocket on a linen shirt. It was cute when it was popular, but not so much now…

Most of the pictures I did were timeless and I wish I had something to show you, but I usually gave my work away for presents.
The best thing I use my silk ribbon for is when I embellish doll clothes… I’ll show you a couple of things that are more modern and I hope you’ll like them.

Okay, I could go on and on with many more pictures, but I better stop. I think you get the idea. Silk ribbon embroidery is wonderful used in the right way…and I think we could all agree that the “right” way is on doll clothes…NOT people clothes!

I’ll be at the St. Louis Cardinal’s Baseball game tonight with my son, celebrating Mother’s Day! I hope we win!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Everything you showed is so exquisite and perfect, Jeanne! Where did you learn to do ribbon embroidery? Did you have a grandmother show you the way, or your own mother? I absolutely love the close-up of the white dress with embroidery at the waistband! Wish I could have seen the rest of the dress!

I hope your cicada problem is not so severe today, but I know it takes awhile for them to disappear. I hope you get to see the game in spite of the weather forecast! And don’t forget, I’ll be watching, so wave!!!

    1. HI Linda,
Thanks so much for your compliments on my silk ribbon Linda. I appreciate them. I taught myself to do ribbon embroidery…several, several years ago. I’ll have to find some “archived” pictures of some of my early things… I used to teach crazy quilt vests and we used silk ribbon embroidery to embellish them. That was the start of it all.
The white dress was a Colonial one for Felicity. I made a note of it to show it soon…

The Cicada’s are crazy thick in our yard still. George just came in and one was on his back and it flew off in the house… ICK again…

We are leaving as soon as Kristoffer’s shirt gets out of the dryer… I’ll be waving…
      Thanks so much, Jeanne

  2. What a beautiful job! (doesn’t hurt that you use Kishes!) My favorite dolls. You do such wonderful work. Thank you for your time you time in doing this. Sylvia

    1. Thank you Sylvia! I’m happy to give you a dose of Kishes every once in a while. I’m glad you enjoyed looking a the post today.
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thanks so much Jane,
It’s nice to know you think I’m an artist… I just like to sew!!
I plan on having fun tonight…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. You have such a great eye for color, form and placement. I enjoy your creations immensely. So glad I found your blog! Hope you enjoy the game. Kathleen

    1. HI Kathleen,
I’m glad you found my blog too. It’s nice to have you aboard!

I don’t know much about color, like an artist does, but I figure it out by trial and error just trying this with that until I like it.

      We’re leaving in just a little bit…
      Blessings, Jeanne

Jeanne, your ribbon embroidery is lovely. This is one skill I have on my bucket list to learn. I have the ribbon, the needles and two books so I better get at it. I am so inspired!!!

    1. HI Jeannie,
If you lived closer to me, we’d have a session so you could get this marked off your bucket list. I’ll share a few more later on… Glad to have inspired you. It’s really fun to do because you see results so quickly.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Your silk embroidery is beautiful, Jeanne. The brooches are lovely. I think perhaps sometimes we worry too much about what is in style and less about what we like.

Thank you Jeanne and Carolyn for letting me know how you store your fabric.

    Jevne

    1. HI Jevne,
I guess we should just wear what we like and not worry so much about what is in style. Hard to do though… I still think it’s pretty and I know how much work it takes…
      Thanks Jevne,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. I never learned silk ribbon embroidery but love to see it on doll clothing. As I read your blog while eating lunch,
I was happy there is not much ICK today. I hate insects along with snakes and TV wildlife programs with attacking species. My family knows just skip past those programs, although both daughters like to protect spiders. I now allow the tiny ones to have a life. They have convinced me they eat other insects and protect me from them.

    1. Hi Jan,
A little late getting back to you, but wanted to thank you for your comments. I’m so glad you make my blog a part of your lunchtime.
No more “buggy” posts…this one was enough!
      Thanks so much Jan,
      Blessings, Jeanne
