Saturday’s Surprise ~ Samantha…

After taking those pictures of Nellie and Rebecca outside in the snow, I was determined to get the coat and dress set listed on Ebay… and YAY, I did! It became a live auction Friday evening (a bit earlier than I normally list… my mistake), and you can see it by clicking on the picture at the right side bar, or you can click HERE. I was very happy with the way everything worked out on this set and hope you like it too!

Remember, Ebay changed things around in the categories for people who sew for the dolls. You can’t just type in American Girl Samantha or Nellie or whoever you are looking for and find all the listings… The clothing has to be listed in Clothing and Accessories (it’s in the side menu on the left hand side) or Ebay will pull your listing.
Well, I just tried “American Girl Easter dress Samantha” and it came up… so there are ways to find my things… or you could just type in American Girl Promise of Spring and it will show up…

I got a box in the mail…

…it was one day too late…Can you see who it is in that bubble wrap?

It’s Samantha and this is a good sign…nice tight limbs…

Straight out of the box she looked like this…

Her hair is ABSOLUTELY divine…

…and I love it curled around her shoulders…

Okay, so here’s the story on her… I have been thinking for a few months of getting another Samantha again… but I wasn’t sure what kind I wanted… I mean there’s the original Pleasant Company one, then when Mattel took over the company, there was a slightly different looking Samantha, and then kind of a transitional Samantha from American Girl, and then after she was retired and brought back, there was the Beforever Samantha. Normally, I’m a die-hard Pleasant Company historical doll person, but after looking at gobs and gobs of listings, trying to decide… I made up my mind on a few things…I wanted a pretty doll, because pretty dolls sell clothing better… and I wanted one with nice hair, because I love fixing it different ways. I also wanted some color in her face so a doll that was pale wasn’t going to cut it with me.

Well, after looking at dozens and dozens of listings and opening them up to see the pictures, I stumbled upon this little cutie…

There was only that picture and these 2…

She had pretty coloring, evenly placed eyes, beautiful hair, from a non smoking home, and so I was hooked… I tried to look at other listings, but it seemed I just kept coming back to this one…so I bid on her during the last few minutes…and won her, without a fight from anyone else… I guess she was supposed to be mine…

So I have big plans for more Victorian things this year… but for now… how about a few more pictures of sweet Samantha…

Sorry, about the picture overload… I guess I like her…

Have a wonderful Saturday and Sunday…

I’ll see you Monday,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Just what Nellie needed! And apparently just what you needed too. Now you need another 2 part outfit so that these two can work together. I’m sure something is in there percolating right now, when you should be asleep. It’s not at all too late for another coat and dress.
How many AGs do you have now? I think too many is just enough.

I just finished baking a mincemeat cake. My house smells so good. It’s easier than pie, and I like it better.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
If I had gotten Samantha first I probably wouldn’t have gotten Nellie, but now that I have her, I think I’ll keep her.. .She is pretty versatile and very sweet!
I have 10 dolls now… I was going to keep it at 8, but somehow I got sidetracked… eek!

I’ve never heard of a mincemeat cake…only the pie… I bet it is good… Eat a slice for me! :o)Blessings, Jeanne

  2. She’s a beauty, Jeanne! I can see her in any pretty outfits you might make for her so easily. Her coloring is simply divine! So do you know how old she is or what year she was made? She does have the Beforever dress on, so maybe a Beforever doll? What do you think of the dress? Somehow, I don’t think it conjures up visions of 1904, which is supposed to be Samantha’s time, but more like something closer to now. I had thought of buying that dress, when it was available, for my Ruthie, one of my 40’s dolls, but never did.
Your Samantha’s hair is just gorgeous! It looks so nice and well, let’s say, unplayed with!

Going to check out your latest listing now. The pictures are SO good!

    1. HI Linda,
I guess I didn’t make it clear in my post… she is the Beforever doll…and yes, her pink dress is just sort of ordinary and not nearly fancy enough for those 1900’s dresses I’ve seen and have in mind! :o)
Her hair is beautiful and so soft to the touch… I love it!
      Thanks so much Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. WOW, your Samantha is in excellent condition. She is a pretty doll. Can’t help myself wondering what you paid for her. I know how much of a bargain shopper you are. You don’t have to answer that question, just curious.

    1. HI Laureen,
Thanks for your sweet comments on my new Samantha… She is VERY pretty and I was thrilled when I opened that box!
Well, as far as the price goes, there were others slightly less in price than what she was ($99) but she was the one I liked the most… It may have just been the seller photographs of her, but I could see exactly what I was getting and didn’t want to be surprised by something I couldn’t see as well in some of the other doll pictures. Even at $99, it won’t take long to make my money back on her if I make a pretty dress and it sells well. I’m also going to sell her dress set… that will reduce the price a little bit. She was what I wanted and so I caved!
      Thanks Laureen,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. What a lucky find. It was meant to be since no one else bid on that lovely doll. Must be the after-Christmas lull. Can’t wait to see what you sew for her. The blue outfit is just beautiful and once again reminds me of a suit I loved that was made of wool that looked like that. You certainly have a way with a doll’s hair. Hope you have a peaceful weekend.

    1. Thanks Susette,
I was thrilled to have won this Samantha doll. I had my eye on a few others, but she just stole my heart from the git go! It was kind of like that with Lian… I wanted her SO bad, and just had to have her…
I used to have a little blue jumper made from a fabric like the tweed coat… It was when we lived in Italy and if I had time, I’d search my pictures, but I can’t spend time doing that now… maybe another time…
I do hope to have a peaceful weekend… I hope yours is too !
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Samantha is very pretty, Jeanne. You have excellent taste and a knack for great choices. Thanks for sharing her with us….will look forward to beautiful creations that will adorn her.

    Blessings.

    1. Thank you Becky,
She IS a very pretty doll and it was fun to share her… I hope my dolly fever is over.. I never really intended to get Nellie, but she was a great buy and I stumbled on her when I was searching for Samantha dolls… yikes…
I am looking forward to some pretty dresses too… can’t wait!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Dear Jeanne, How wonderful! I bet you already have an idea for the perfect new dress to make for her. I bet it will have something to do with Valentine’s Day. Maybe it will be a tea dress. I can see her inviting friends over to take Afternoon Tea.

    1. Hi Dorothy,
I do have a few Valentine things in mind for Samantha… and can’t wait to start something… it will be fun having a Victorian girl around… Nellie too, of course! :o)
      A tea party sounds wonderful!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Love your new Samantha. You are right about her beautiful coloring. She may look very sweet next to your Ten Ping repaint who looked rosy and sweet to me also. I can see so many lovely dresses with her as a model.
The listing looks great! I’m sure you will have many bidders.
We have frost here this morning. Looks like snow, but the sun is coming up and hopefully will warm things up soon.
Hope the weekend treats you well.

    1. HI Joy,
I think it was probably her coloring that got me sucked in the most… or maybe her hair… I love both of those things about her.. she does look kind of rosy like Ten Ping did when she came home!
It has warmed up to 48 degrees today so most of the snow is melted…
I hope your weekend is great too!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Welcome to the family Samantha!
She is indeed lovely and will be a great addition to your family of models. I’m already looking forward to seeing the outfits that she will inspire. As everyone is noting, her hair is beautiful. She has a truly sweet face too.
We’re a little warmer here in the mid-west. I hope everyone has gentle weather.
    Have a good day.
    Take care.

    1. HI Charlotte,
Yes, every family needs a “Samantha” don’t they? That’s why I bought her! :o)
She is very pretty and I’m very happy to have her as one of my models!
It’s a bit warmer today here too… I just took my Chinese neighbor to Walmart and George is helping another neighbor move books…
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thank you Shara,
She is the Beforever version of Samantha. I had a hard time letting myself get one of the Beforever dolls, as they felt like they weren’t the “original” dolls, but I just fell hard for her face and had to give in.. silly me!
      Thanks Shara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. How exciting that you got Samantha! Her facial paint is very nice and pretty and so is her hair. She will be perfect for your plans of Victorian clothes. Sometimes, buying a doll because she is pretty and sometimes newer, makes a difference to me. I had no problem doing that when I collected Barbies. I preferred the remakes because they were new and had better vinyl hair.
Well, I imagine your mind is going a mile a minute on ideas of creativity. I’m happy you found the right Samantha!!

    1. Thanks so much Paula,
I think you have to get what appeals to you and this Samantha just did it for me! She is very pretty and I hope we have a great time coming up with her first dress… I’m glad I’m not alone in getting the “remakes,” even if they were Barbies…
      Thanks so much Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. How do you do, Samantha! It’s a pleasure to meet you! My, aren’t you sweet? You are very photogenic with your rosy complexion and silky smooth hair. I will look forward to seeing you model some beautiful Victorian fashions soon. In the meantime, I hope you are becoming quickly acquainted with the other girls. Ask them about the toy box! 😉

Congratulations on your new little girl, Jeanne, chosen with such great care. What a charmer Samantha is, and what wonderful JMO designs you must be dreaming up for her. I can’t wait to see her debut dress. A Valentine tea party does sound like so much fun after all the wintery weather so many of us have been experiencing. I know whatever you design will equal the charms of your new little muse. Anticipating something enchanting!

    1. Thanks so much Anne,
Samantha is fitting in perfectly with my other girls. It’s a bit more crowded on the dolls shelf, but they seem to like it…
Well, I better come up with something really special for her…I think everyone is expecting it. Thank you so much for your sweet compliments on her…she really is lovely!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. Really late again to see your post. The Victorian dress and coat set is just lovely. I was glad to see it again. I wish you had taken one picture of Nellie wearing the dress though. I think that would have been fun to see.
So you received your Samantha and decided on a BF one. Yes, it’s important to have a pretty doll especially if your using her to sell clothes. I’ve seen the WB Samantha (actually had one for a few weeks) even though I already had my PC German one. I didn’t care for the WB one so I returned her. There are variations in the dolls. My PC Sam has more coloring than some I’ve seen, but not what the BF girls have. Actually, when I got my Classic Caroline after my PC Sam and PC Felicity I though she had too much coloring compared to the German/West German girls, but now she’s perfect. All dolls vary. My daughter and I each have a first release 2004 Nellie, but mine has IMO much prettier coloring wit rosier cheeks and slightly ore lip paint. Hers was ordered release week and I got mine a few years ago NIB off of eBay where I could hand pick her.
Anyway, I’m so happy that you got Samantha and am looking forward to many Victorian creations. I’m sure we’ll be treated to her debut dress soon. A Valentine tea party does sound fun. I have those Spring Party dresses that Sam and Nellie got that year right before Valentine’s. Esther Howland did beautiful Valentine cards back in that era, really enchanting.
One more comment regarding the variations in the doll versions. I think for me the version I like, is the version I saw first. Therefore, I like the PC tan body West German/ German Samantha, Kirsten, Addy and Felicity. The first release Josefina (19970, Kit (2000) and Nellie (2004) and the Classic versions of Caroline and Julie. The only doll that breaks the rule is Molly. Even though I saw the PC German version of her first, I like Mattel’s version better.
It’s interesting to note that when Molly returns that both Samantha and she will have had five different versions. Sorry for the ramble about the versions, but that’s what happens when you get a new doll and one I have and love. 🙂

  12. Thanks Laura,
Maybe if I don’t forget, I’ll take a picture of the dress on Nellie for you to see…
There are LOTS of variations on rhe different dolls and another thing I noticed was some of the dolls have been “pieced” together with parts from one doll and the parts from another doll. Just because you see Pleasant Company on the back of the dolls neck or a doll in the Beforever dress doesn’t mean that’s what you’re getting.
I should look on my Nellie’s neck…I can’t remember what it says…but she’s taller than my Rebecca or Samantha. She may be put on a different body…
Don’t worry about rambling…I always learn something from you…
    Thanks Laura,
    Blessings, Jeanne

  13. And I was only going to get 1. And now there are 14 on my shelf, 3 in the closet, plus 3 more owned by the grand girls. I even sold 3 (not included in my count. Lol
