Pies, Purples, and Pouts…

I received my first Valentine card of the year today from Joy. It is the sweetest little card that says “from Calvin” on the back.

I wonder who he gave it too??? Hmmmm…
It’s the cutest thing and there is a brad up in her hat that has a piece in the back that makes her eyes move from side to side. I’ve never seen one like this before. Joy said it reminded her of me when she saw the little girl was carrying a pie. I gave my Apple Pie recipe last year and Joy made her “first” apple pie from it. You can see that post and recipe HERE.

Speaking of pies, we had the leftovers from the Chicken and Spinach Pie tonight. It was just as good tonight, but the crust wasn’t quite as flaky… Several people asked me for that recipe… so here’s another one… I just took pictures of the directions and hope you can see them well enough. If you need to click on the pictures and they will enlarge.

This is what mine looked like last night…

Here are the ingredients enlarged for you…

This is the Phyllo baking sheets I used. They are 9 x 14″ and super thin. I opened them up, and spread them out on a cutting board, then I kept them covered with a dish towel as I put it together. It’s not something you have to be super careful about… just slap those sheets down and dab them with the olive oil between layers.

I used a silicone pastry brush to brush the olive on the pastry sheets.

Here are the directions all in one shot, if you can read them better this way…

…and this just shows how to make a pie collar, to keep the edges from getting too dark. I put my pie collar on about 20 minutes into the baking…

…and speaking of collars, I’m not sure if my next dress will have one, but here is the fabric and a few extra pieces I may use. Laura has already thought of the title… “Springtime in the South.” If you missed her comments, you’ll have to wait and see who this will be for!

Just a reminder too, that Molly’s dress is on Ebay right now. I normally have my dresses run for 5 days, but this was going to be too late for Valentine’s Day if I did that so it ends Thursday evening. You can see it HERE or click on the picture at the top of the right side bar.

NOW… if nothing above made you smile, I have something that will!! Susette sent me the most adorable picture of Riya and Krish in their younger days and it is… well, you’ll just have to see it… it’s a little bit sad, and a little bit sweet… It’s a classic and I’d have that thing blown up and put on my wall somewhere! Thanks for the smiles it has brought to me and will bring to others!

Well, that’s it for today. No sewing for me as I was working on closing out my books for my sewing business. You know…tax time! :o(

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Beautiful fabrics and trims! They will make a beautiful spring outfit.
I remember pie collars. My mother taught me how to make them many years ago.
Tax time – now that doesn’t sound fun at all.
    Take care.

    1. Thanks Charlotte,
I hope I can turn these purple fabrics into a dream dress. It will be pretty Springy…I hope!
      Tax time…you’re right…no fun!
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. That pie looks delicious! I can’t wait to see what you do with those fabrics. I would definitely blow that photo up. That is just too cute. 😀

    1. Hi Christine,
That pie WAS delicious! I can’t wait to see what I do with fabrics either!
      Thanks so much, Christine,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. What a darling Valentine, Jeanne! Looks like something they sent when I was small!

Oh, that pie looks SO good, and I am a spinach lover, so will be trying that for sure. Now a silly question–where in the grocery store do you find phyllo dough? It says frozen, so does that mean you find it only in the frozen food section? Is that the only way it comes? I wish you could see the frozen food section in my grocery store, it is immense! Lots of times I see things that I am NOT looking for, but when I need to find something that I am, I don’t know where to start! But you did a good job with showing us how to make it, I just now have to find the phyllo dough!

I know Laura is all about Felicity, but you just made her an outfit. I look at that and think maybe Rebecca? She shows lilac off so well, and I can’t remember offhand when the last Rebecca dress was made.

Oh, those two darling grandchildren of Susette’s! It’s a good Comedy/Tragedy picture! Don’t you wish they would stay little a bit longer, Susette?

    1. Hi linda,
George has a few Valentines from when he was little. I love the old ones…

Our phyllo dough is next to the frozen fruit. It does only come frozen and you need to let it thaw in your frig a day or 2 before you use it. Mine was in 9×14″ sheets and as thin as a kleenex. It’s not hard to do…don’t be to precise about it…keep it covered with a dish towel between each sheet you use. U
I just had some olive oil out and used a silicone pastry brush and quickly dabbed the oil on the sheets as I laid them out. I’m not sure I used 8 sheets on the top and 8 sheets on the bottom…I just added sheets till it wasn’t see through anymore.
That colonial dress wasn’t for Laura…she just loves Colonial dresses. I hope I can get this purple confection to turn out like I see it in my mind…
I too, just love that picture of Riya and Krish…it cracks me up every time I look at it…
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    2. Hi Linda,
Yes, You’re right, Felicity is my favorite doll and I love her PC collection. Besides Colonial, there are two other eras that I am particularly fond of. One is Victorian/Edwardian and the other is the one this dress will represent. In fact, even though I’m only a bit into creating that world part of one historical doll’s collection and creating, finding, or sewing the rest), three of my five dolls are destined to live in this era, two almost exclusively and the other at least half of the time. A smaller collection requires some creative time traveling. 🙂 The title “Springtime in the South” I gave to Jeanne for her next lovely creation is a good hint for that era.

  4. You are a master baker, Jeanne. You knew when to cover the edges in order to get the center properly browned. It looks so much more appetizing than the one in the magazine. I can’t believe the range of your talents and knowledge. Finding the phyllo dough is as follows: Ask the cashier or manager to call a stock person to lead you to it. The markets are overflowing with specialty items now. So nice of Joy to share the Valentine with Jeanne and all of us via the photo. Nice memories.

That’s what I named the picture, too: Comedy and Tragedy. Hard to set that one up; it just has to happen. Their mother took it. Riya wishes already she had stayed little. I’m thinking Rebecca, too, for the dress. Or Addy? Definitely an American Girl.

    1. Hi Susette,
We had to be at the Cancer place early this morning so I didn’t have time to eat any breakfast before we left. There is a little cafe here and I saw a square of spinach quiche so I thought I’d do a little comparison…let me just say…THERE WAS NO COMPARISON! Mine was outstanding compared to this one…that crust is so flaky and light…this was like a biscuit dough on the bottom…live and learn I say!
I’m so glad you sent thatbpicture, Susette. ..I can’t tell you how many times I have looked at it.
You will all find out soon who gets to model next…
      Thanks Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Really…I think you are turning me into a purple lover. That shade of lavendar is just yummy! The accessories are perfect…the tiny trim is amazing. Is it vintage? It will put a big smile on someone’s face.
Riya and Krish….aren’t they the cutest children…now we need to see a recent pic to compare.
Thank you for the recipe..it looks so good.
    Have a happy day.

    1. Hi Kathie,
These colors really are pretty and even prettier on person than what my camera can capture. I hope you like the “finished” dress when I am done. The trim isn’t vintage but I have had it for several years.
I’m glad everyone is enjoying Riya and krish’s picture. Isn’t that just the cutest thing?
      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Thanks for the recipe. Now if I can find a way to conceal the spinach, the other person here might enjoy it. I know, I’ll tell him it is broccoli. 🙂
Susette’s photo made my day. Feeling the same here as Krish today. It’s pouring rain AGAIN! Everything around here is one big mud bowl.
Springtime in the South will be an amazing set. Loving the colors. By the way, our Daphne is blooming away but you can’t smell it because of the constant rain.
Hope all goes well today for you guys.

    1. Hi Joy,
You could probably use chopped cooked broccoli instead of the spinach if you wanted. I bet it would work.
It’s pretty gloomy here today, but no rain so far.
I can’t wait for Springtime in the South to get in the works too…maybe I can start on it tonight.
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. The picture of Riya and Krish is too cute!!

And Springtime in the South….beautiful, beautiful choice of materials and trim. Oh my!!!

    1. Hi Paula,
I just knew that picture of Riya and Krish would be a big hit with everyone.
I’m sitting herein the cancer place drawing pics of how I want this dress to turn out. I hope I get it right.
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. That recipe looks good. I’ll have to try it sometime soon.
I’m so glad you like my dress title and have decided to run with it. The fabric and flowers are just lovely and I can’t wait to see how this comes together.
That picture of Riya and Krish is just precious, Susette. Maybe Krish is making that face because his sister is hugging him extra tightly. I bet they are the best of friends.

    1. HI Laura,
Thanks for the title of the next dress. I better get busy! I did some sketching for the ideas I had while George was “busy” at the cancer place today.
Thanks again, I never would have thought of that name!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Oh dear, I’m working on taxes too, but only in my “spare time”, so I still have a little left to finish. Thanks for the sharing the recipe. I will definitely give it a try. It doesn’t look like it would be too hard, so hopefully mine will be a success.
All the purple fabrics and trum you have picked out work well together. Although purple is not my favorite, I think it will make a lovely outfit for some lucky doll.

    1. Hi Carolyn,
Taxes do take time. When I get last year’s done, I’m changing my ways and I’m going to try and keep up with things at least once a week if not daily.
You’ll have to let me know what you think if you try the pie.
I’m working on this dress tonight so I should have something to show…
      Thanks Carolyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. Jeanne Marie, thank you for directions to post on your website. I love all the things you do and share! You are a worker woman for sure! Sandy

    1. Great Sandy,
Now you can be a part of all our conversations! The ladies here are very friendly…hope you enjoy it here instead of all by yourself just reading your email.
      Blessings, Jeanne
