Progress in the kitchen… we’re talking priming…finally!

First of all… I’m not sure why some of you are getting your posts a day late. I just found out from a friend that a guy at my church might be able to help me with that… but I haven’t had a chance to talk with him… I hope I can get it resolved… and I’m so sorry that some of you are missing out on the fun we have here…

Thank you too, for the new subscribers… I hope you’ll feel right at home here…and soon I’ll be back either “sewing” or “sawing!” :o)

HI Everyone,
It’s so nice to read your comments about my “mystery” picture and your kind words about my Aunt Evelyn. As far as the “mystery” picture, I’ll have to leave you in suspense just a little while longer… my hubby was a “slacker” and didn’t get his work finished. :o)
Actually he was doing more than his fair share in the kitchen going above and beyond what I had even hoped… So I’ll have to wait on the “reveal” picture so you all keep wondering… :o)

The “above and beyond” part he did was tearing out an old doorway that has been an eyesore for the last 14 years. This is a doorway that is just as you go down the hallway from my kitchen. The ceilings are 9′ tall but this doorway was framed in and just plain ugly. My hubby started tearing it out before I got a picture of it. But this is a partial picture of what it looked like before and then after.

Here’s another picture, but it’s a little hard to understand. This doorway is just at the end of my shiplap wall as you head down the hallway. As soon as you turn into this area, there is a door that goes upstairs and at the end of this little area, there is a door that goes to the basement. Maybe you can see it in this angle.

Well, JOY… Cindy and I finally started priming the cabinets today! We took the hinges off and got them marked so we’d get the right door back on the right cabinet. We only got the boxes or the facings primed, but we did it twice and sanded them. The drawer boxes below the cabinets were primed as well and let me tell you…They look wonderful!!! I can’t wait until they are painted! I feel like I have a handle on what I need to do to complete them.

Here is also a picture of the light Cindy brought me to put over my sink. It’s just a clear globe with an Edison bulb and it’s really fun in my kitchen. The picture is taken from the side so you can see its shape better against the shiplap wood…

Well, everyone, I have to tell you something. Lately it seems like my mom is loosing her memory faster than we’d care to think. Cindy and I were very concerned and could see almost daily things not going so well for her. SO… I am going to take her to see my sister Deb, and some new grandbabies… my mom can’t remember what her grandkids look like and she’s got a couple of new great grandbabies we want her to see.

I’m going to step away from the blog for just a few days…we’ll be gone till Friday, but I’m going to leave my blog open to you all so you can carry on with each other… I’ll make it so you can still comment… but I think I’ll just concentrate on some family time…
I’ll still read your comments and maybe add one at the end… but I won’t be able to answer your comments individually. When I get back I hope to be back like usual… Thanks for your prayers…

Blessings, Jeanne

How exciting to see more kitchen work going on!! It’s good to see George back at work there, too. The new light over the sink is really a fun addition to your kitchen, and I can hardly wait to see all the cupboards, etc., painted and with handles/pulls on them!

I’m so sorry to hear about your mom’s memory problems accelerating. Been there with my own mom, so I know what you are talking about. With this happening, I’m thinking you are more relieved than ever that you got her into her new apartment when you did.

So, you go ahead and take her to Deb’s, and, even if she’s not quite sure who everyone is, you know she will really enjoy those new grandbabies! Even when my mom’s memory was fading fast, she always loved seeing babies and little children; that seems to be fairly common among those with memory loss. Sometimes even a life-size, realistic baby doll is appealing to them, and they will hold and cuddle the “baby” quite happily.

    Prayers continue.

  2. Take all the time you need, Jeanne! We all have those times when family is the most important and needs to be taken care of. It shows what a wonderful person you are and how caring and mindful you are to the needs of your mother. I’m so sorry to hear about her losing her memory, so I guess you want to keep her connected as much as you can, as long as you can.

Even with those bits and pieces of pictures of the kitchen, I can see it slowly coming to realization! I love your light over the sink! Does it do the job? I have often wondered about those Edison bulbs, and might try one soon. I’m just concerned about if they have a glare or not, since my ceilings are not as high as yours.

Well, I need to get going, since today I have Willie here visiting. This is his last day before first grade! No telling my condition after he leaves!!!

  3. Hi Jeanne
I am also sorry to hear about your mom and hope your visit will be a comfort to her and your family. Take all the time you need and please don’t worry about us. I think you have a group of faithful, understanding readers.

I bet you are so happy to finally have a few coats of primer on your cabinets and I really like the hanging light Cindy got you. So happy to see George is up to some heavy work tearing out the that doorway. The progress is amazing!

Wishing you safe travels and all the best

  4. The kitchen is really coming along and I’m loving every bit of it. The shiplap is so appealing and the white paint is so bright and cheerful. After all the hard work, you’re going to want to dance a jig around your kitchen. It’s really lovely and nice that Cindy is helping you with the painting. I’m sure George needs to watch himself and not overdue.

I totally understand what you are going through with your mother. My dear sweet mother had dementia also and lived with dementia for 8 years. I’m grateful she was well taken care of and is now with my father and our Heavenly Father in Heaven.

Enjoy your time with Deb and your mom. Thinking of all of you! Blessings

  5. You’ve gotten me thinking about doors now and air flow. I’m sure way back in your home’s history there was a reason for the door. I’m thinking to keep the heat in the kitchen? You know, from that wood cooking stove. Then, one squeaked open the hall door where the temperature was very cold and bolted through another door to go to the basement and gather some stored winter squash and a jar of preserved pickles. Back upstairs and through that door to the warm part of the house. Maybe… It will now be so nice and open. Makes the rooms looks much larger.
Now I feel guilty for nagging so much about painting the cabinets. But, they look great! And it is only primer. The paint job will be so professional when completed. I know it is tons of work too. But, the cabinets will be lovely. I so love white.
The new light fits in so well with the farmhouse history. As a side note, we actually have a few original, not the reproduction bulbs, in a box in the garage. You know, we have just about everything around here. Not sure what we’re doing with them, but they are very interesting to view.
It is wonderful that you are able to take your mom to visit Deb and the grands. Take lots of pictures that you can put up for her in her place when you return. Might help to label them on the front also. We did that for my mother in law. When caretakers, cleaning people etc. came in, they would always look at the photos and then be able to say. Oh, what a cute granddaughter you have or something like that. She would beam. And I agree with Charlotte about the babies. Holding her great grandson from her youngest granddaughter was a special moment for my mother in law.
Have fun and then it’s back to work on that kitchen! Ha Ha. I’m picturing Thanksgiving at your place. 🙂

  6. I’m so sorry about Mom. You take your time and we will all be here in the kitchen till you return. Speaking of kitchens, it is looking so cute! I love the new light and the cabinets are so pretty!
Hope you have a good day!
    Take care —

  7. You make progress and more progress. The kitchen gets better and better. You and George and Cindy work and work and work, and it pays off. I’m so glad for you. The paint on the window is dry but I can see you don’t want to put the curtains up while you are still painting. They should be one of the last touches that make everything perfect.

You got your mother into a new safe place just in time. I hope she can enjoy it for some time to come and that the trip to Deb’s is an adventure you all enjoy. The important thing is that she remembers who her children are and how much you love her.

Do travel safely and enjoy Deb and her family.

  8. So sorry to hear about your mom, Jeanne. You did find her a new safe home just in time. It’s good that you’re going to visit Deb and she gets to see the new great grandbabies. Babies are always a good thing. Take all the time you need to be with your family. we all have times like that.
Your kitchen is coming along slowly but surely. The light fixture Cindy brought you is really neat. i love those Edison bulbs where you can see the filaments.
Take care and prayers for safe travels.

  9. More super progress on your kitchen and the cabinets are looking great. Can’t wait until you have them all finished and we see the end result. I love the hanging light Cindy brought you and your husband. It’s perfect for the style of your kitchen and add just the right touch over the sink.

So sorry to hear about your mother and I know that makes you and your family sad, also. My mother is one of 8 and 4 died from the complications of Alzheimer’s Disease, so I know what you are all going through. It is a good thing that you have her where she is safe and being taken care of. I’ve been told that making a recording of her favorite music for her to listen to helps with memory. And a baby doll (toy) is often comforting to those whose memory is failing. I’m sure she will be so excited to see her family even if she can’t put a name to a face, she will know that you are all there. Her heart will know even though she can’t recognize all of you. With the high rate of my family I have been told that my chances of this happening are about 90% and that is scary. Take all the time you need as you know all of us will be here when you return.

Travel safe. Stay strong and will keep you in my thoughts.

  10. Hi Jeanne,
Wonderful progress on the kitchen ! You all do such awesome work together. You should be so proud. I really love Debs light. I wondered what you might be putting there. It’s perfect as it’s clear and simple but very pretty; doesn’t obstruct the view.
I’m happy to hear you are taking some time off. You need it and your Mama will enjoy the visit. Have fun and we will see you when you get back : )

    Hugs
    Ingrid
