Patsy Tonner’s “Surprise” outfit…

Just call me fickle, I now must confess
Patsy’s back to wearing a dress
I tried and I tried to make her those britches
But just ended up ripping out all my stitches

I added a skirt and made it all “twirly”
With bloomers beneath she still can look girly
To ride on her trike it won’t be a problem
Patsy is pleased and thinks that it’s awesome!

I know…I know… you were expecting a romper. I was too, but it just wasn’t coming together. I’m really a dress kind of girl and a pretty girly one at that. So Patsy gave me the green light to rip those romper legs out, add the skirt and make it into a dress and then make a separate pair of more fitted pantalettes. Finally I got it finished but not in time to get it listed on Ebay. I’m hoping to get it on Ebay this evening. (Friday night)

I added some buttons to the pantalettes and a flower to the hat and waist of the dress. Tiny red buttons go up the back of her dress. I wanted to say, the green peplum matches in the back, but I had my camera too high and it looks like it’s off.

Patsy picked “Nilla” to be her new friend as she stands and waits for someone to buy this.

She can ride her tricycle pretty well for being in a dress, don’t you think?

    1. HI Jan,
Yes, Patsy is my girly girl…even when riding her trike!
      Thanks so much,

  1. Well, we do what we have to do, to get a good outfit! LOL!! good adapting skills. You could try something like Bleuette’s outfit here: http://thebleudoor.com/191719.htm sometime. I’ve made that one – and it worked out good… In fact, several of her ‘swim suits’ would make good ‘play outfits’. 🙂

    1. So funny, but the Bleuette outfit reminds me a lot of the bloomer gym suits we had to wear in junior high in the early 1960’s. This pattern would be sweet in a fine print I think.

      1. HI Joy,
        I hadn’t thought of a sweet tiny print in a feminine color… hmmm….
        Thanks for the idea…
        Blessings, Jeanne

    2. Hi Mary,
I think I’ll stew over the idea of another romper for a bit… I need a more flattering pattern I think. I wasn’t too keen on the poufy legs… and Linda was right…they looked like PJ’s.
Maybe I’m just destined to make dresses…not rompers!
Thanks for the link to the Bleuette’s rompers…
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thank you Regina,
I just got it listed on Ebay and it will go on tonight… I’m liking the dress better too! Guess we girly girls will just have to stick together.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. She CAN absolutely ride a tricycle and be a little lady. What a marvelous outfit you’ve come up with Jeanne. Your work is always such a work of art. Thanks for bringing us along!

    I trust you’ll have a lovely weekend.

    Blessings.

    1. Thank you Becky,
If I just stick with something long enough, I can usually figure it out. Thanks so much for your kind words about my sewing!
My weekend has already started being busy but I hope to enjoy it…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Well, Patsy does look pleased with the outfit. Very sweet with the flowers, buttons, and adorable little hat.

    1. Thank you Joy,
The listing just started on Ebay…now you can see the rest of the pictures I took… thank you for your kind words, Joy.
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. HI Karen,
Whew! I never know if I’m doing the right thing or not but usually go with my gut and this one was going no where fast with those romper legs… so I switched it up… I’m glad you think I made the right decision!
      Thanks Karen,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Pasty looks so cute in her outfit. The little sun hat and pantalettes are so sweet. I prefer dresses as well. I dressed my daughter in mostly dress when she was young and she had little shorts to wear under them for play… feminine but still covered up.. I like dresses on my dolls best as well. I’m a very girly girl and that is probably why I love Samantha’s, Felicity and Civil War dresses… full of ruffles, lace and feminine details.

    1. HI Laura,
Thank you for your kind compliments on Patsy’s “dress” now! I prefer dresses and that’s what I dressed Rebecca in most of the time too. I should go through my pictures sometime and count how many pants or romper sets I’ve made. I bet less than 20 in 10 years of doll sewing for Ebay…
      Thanks again,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. So cute, Jeanne! That really did work out perfectly after all, in spite of the trouble you had coming up with an outfit. It still is a play dress, but can double as a Sunday outfit too, especially with the darling little hat!

Like Joy says, that bloomer outfit reminds me of what I had to wear for gym in the late 50’s, except mine was a one piece! Can’t imagine today’s girls wearing those, plus they had to be ironed too!

    1. Hi Linda,
Thanks for the kind compliments Linda… no more pajama’s for her!

We had gym outfits sort of like those too, only ours were royal blue cotton and had to be ironed…and what a pain they were!

      Thanks again,
      Blessings, Jeanne

I really do love what you have done with Patsy’s dress/pantalettes. A proper girl always wears some type of bottoms when she rides her bike. I am totally on board with this entire outfit.
When I saw you working on the romper the only thing I saw not going well was that they looked “blousey”. Just a bit too full to then gather at the ankle for some type of cuff. I really think you should give it another try with Patsy on the romper. Narrow down the leg a bit and see if that makes a difference.
Back many numbers of years ago I made a romper for my grade school daughter. I used soft pink pinwhale corduroy. When she tried them on for the hem length I could see the fullness from the hip to the bottom was just too roomy. I trimmed them down at the side seam. It made all the difference. They turned out cute and she wore them quite a bit.
I do think this is worth another go around with Patsy as the romper is quite cute.

    1. Thanks Jeannie,
I like how it “finally” turned out too! But it took me a while to figure it out!

I need to work on drafting a pattern with less fullness in the legs.. I totally agree with you and then they might be cute! I will see what I can come up with and try again sometime!
Thanks for the pep talk, Jeannie!
      Blessings, Jeanne

Patsy’s outfit is ready for Ebay — or already on Ebay. Now it’s time to turn your talents to Easter. What special things are you doing for Easter this year?

    1. HI Marilyn,
Yes, Patsy’s dress set is on Ebay now…
Well, we are busy this year, but I don’t think quite as busy as last year… This morning I woke up the smell of stain. George was staining 14 wooden stands that our church holds flags from the different nations in. They had gotten scuffed up and needed a touch up! Then I had to go to town and find a piece of white fabric to use on the cross that will up on the platform. Somehow the piece from last year disappeared… Then I had to find some black napkins to hold the flag poles upright… sort of stuffing the napkins down in the holes to take up the slack. I didn’t have nearly as busy of a day as George had… and tomorrow he will be even busier. I’m going to work on things here at home…
I have to make something for an Easter Picnic we are having after church… hmmm…. what to have?
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. The outfit is just darling. Thanks for sharing the angst about it as I run into that all the time and it’s good to know I’m not alone and it’s part of the process. Happy Easter Day.

    1. HI Susette,
I guess it’s okay if you run into troubles… as long as you figure out a solution to them…
I’m glad I’m not alone either!
      Thanks Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne
