My Plan for a new 1950’s dress, just in time for Maryellen’s release…

I have a brand new sewing plan
It involves a dress from the fifties
The idea started at my Jo-Ann’s
And I hope you’ll think it’s nifty

Inspired from a vintage pattern
Back in 1951
With help from Keepers Dolly Duds
Almost half the work is done

I found the teeniest tiny black check
And that will be used for the skirt
The white embroidery that Molly just wore
Will make a lovely shirt

The trim I haven’t decided on yet
Either red or green or pink
But rest assured it will be sweet
I have to take time to think

Eden will be my fifties girl
She has that vintage feel
I hope you’ll check back in just a few days
To see if her dress makes you squeal

Meet Eden…she’s most likely going to be my 50’s girl…

I found a sweet vintage pattern but Eve’s pattern is very similar so with a few adjustments I will hopefully pull the look off… (the patterns weren’t on sale, so I think I ended up paying $10.47 for it!) *sigh*

Here is the pattern I saw last night…

Just a reminder… don’t forget about all those coupons in the JoAnn’s flyer this week… several of them started today and run through the 29th, but some are only for the 20th – 22nd and the 20th – 26th.

Also, today was the first day I’ve seen actual pictures released by American Girl of the newest doll, Maryellen. She’s the new 1950’s girl and will be released and in the American Girl Doll Stores next Thursday, August 27th! What do you think? Anyone getting her?

Maryellen first picture of her

See you tomorrow,

  1. Hi Jeanne,
That pattern is cute. I don’t think I am up on all of the 18″ dolls around now. Will that pattern fit AG? She looks very slim. You are a fitting genius, so even if it is not you will get it to fit perfectly, I am sure.
Like all AG dolls and their entire line I will be wishing that I could get her. I am very excited to see her and all her “stuff” next week.
Wishing you a great weekend, Jeanne!

      1. HI Cindy,
Well, the pattern is designed by Keepers Dolly Duds (Eve) and she is one of the top notch AG doll clothes designers. She’s started selling her patterns through Simplicity and if they fit like the ones she’s sold herself, it will fit fine.
I got a sneak preview at her whole line last night and it’s pretty neat. You had to get permission in writing to post her pictures, so I guess I’ll just wait and let everyone see Maryellen’s stuff when it comes out.
Thanks for liking my corny poem…
        Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Loved your poem. I saw another picture of ME watching television. Can’t wait to see her accessories, but won’t be getting the doll.

    1. Hi Debi,
Now that American Girl has released the first official picture of Maryellen, I think we might see a few more in the next week or so before she is released.
I think Eden will be fine for me…
      Thanks so much Debi,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Cute poem and cute pattern..Maryellen is adorable. The dress you are making is going to be nifty!

    1. HI Regina,
I’m glad you think Maryellen’s dress will be nifty and glad you got a chuckle out of my poem… :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. The “pattern you saw last night” is definitely from the 50’s. I made a skirt like that in Home Ec….graduated in 1959.

    1. HI Jevne,
I’m working on it right now…and right off the bat, I matched up one of the pieces to the wrong one and just spent the last half hour ripping out the serged seam… :o(
Hope your skirt went together smoother than mine is…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I’m late to the party! I’ve been SEWING and can’t believe how crazy it is to try to understand what in the world the pattern wants you to do! I read and reread and read it again, and still can’t fathom what they are trying to do!! This En Forreau pattern is not what I am used to, that’s for sure! I’m used to patterns that are basic and easy, and then again, using material that doesn’t shred when you look at it!!! It’s coming along, but I’ve stopped for the day, and need to clean up all the brown threads all over the place. they are turning up in every dang room in the house!!

I love the idea of a 50’s girl, since I turned 10 in 1952, and had 3 younger sisters, so we had dresses and toys from the 50’s all over our house. It’s fun going back to +memory lane”!
I made my reservation at the St. Louis store to see the new collection before the store opens, so I’m excited about that!

    1. Hi Linda,
I’m sorry you are struggling with the pattern for Felicity’s dress. When you start up again, let me know and I’ll look at my pattern and see if I can give you any tips that I may remember…

Oh, you’ll have to tell us everything about Maryellen…what your true opinions are…etc.
Thanks, and have a good time! I’m sure you will.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Jeanne, you asked for it!! What I now am having trouble with is that back pleated piece of the dress, with the pleats. I don’t quite understand what they want me to do. They have a fold line and then two dotted stitch lines on either side of that fold line. I am afraid to make a mistake on the material and then having to take out stitches and ruin the satin. If they had a picture of the finished dress NOT in a floral print, I could see better, but I just can’t see what it is supposed to look like, and the illustration in the instruction is not very clear to me. Is that supposed to be one pleat on either side? I hope you understand what I am talking about!

Hm, I may have to get that pattern! I had a dress very similar to view C in about 1955–mom made it out of printed voile or something similar, and a blue linen bolero (made from a remnant, no doubt–she was great at squeezing something out of not much!). Brings back memories.

I wonder if Mary Ellen will have a hula hoop among her accessories? I was born in 1946 so grew up mostly in the 1950s, and Definitely had a hula hoop when they first came out! Also Silly Putty…..that was brand new, and we had so much fun with it!

As to Eden’s upcoming outfit, I would say the bottom trim looks most like what we’d have seen in the 1950s. The one in the middle looks more 1970s to me. JMHO.

    1. HI Charlotte,
I have been looking at 50’s patterns for quite a while now and it’s the first time I’ve ever seen this one. I really like it too!
I was born in ’56, but I remember hula hoops and silly putty very much! We played with both a LOT! We used to take Silly Putty and flatten it out and press it down on the comics in the newspapers and then peel it off and stretch out the pictures.

Well, when you see today’s post, you’ll see what I did about the trim… didn’t pick any of the ones I showed…
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne
