Molly’s Rick Rack Dress is almost ready…

I debated about whether or not to show you Molly’s dress, but you’ve all been patiently waiting for it, and there will still be a few more surprises so I thought I’d go ahead and reveal what I’ve done so far. Molly looks pretty adorable, if I do say so myself. I’m so thrilled to have had the opportunity to use Mary’s vintage fabric for this dress. Thank you Mary, for taking a chance on me making it into something…something hopefully you’ll think is worthy of the fabric.

If you remember, this is what I was aiming for…

Pattern for molly enlarged one with rick rack

When I last showed you Molly’s dress, I had taken the rick rack off around the neckline and moved it closer together. I added rick rack to the hem of the dress and spaced it out more like the pattern shows. The fabric is very sheer and it gathered up like a dream and it has enough body to hold a flare really well.

I made a detachable sash with a pre-tied bow in the back. I wanted it to look pretty much like the real thing and spent quite a bit of time trying to get it right. The ends of the sash have velcro so it’s just a matter of lapping the ends together and sticking them together… Viola! Bow Tied!

I bought the blue sparkle tulle the other day and hoped that it wouldn’t be too sparkly underneath Molly’s dress. It wasn’t but I had to put a black stretch waistband on it, because if it shifted down on Molly’s waist any at all, the white or cream stretch lace showed through the sheer fabric of the skirt. The black was the only solution for this. I did try to tie it together with a yellow and red button…

I don’t know how busy my Sunday will turn out to be, but it’s my hope to get more done on it… I hope you’ll keep watching to see the end result… if not tomorrow…very soon!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. What an adorable dress, Jeanne! It looks just perfect and so Mollyish! You know what? I like her hair in braids and all she needs is a pair of pretty red or yellow bows to wear. You could include two different colors for the buyer to decide for herself which ones she wants.

I love the way you made the sash, it will make it easy for closing and still look perfect. Now what is she going to be doing in that darling outfit?

    1. HI Linda,
Thank you very much for your kind compliments Linda.
I took your advice and added both colors of ribbon to her listing…a red pair and a yellow pair.
Well, Molly decided she needed to go to the Fair… just like Felicity went to the fair last 2 weeks ago… that’s what she’s doing!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. How very cute, Jeanne! Molly looks super cute in your fine creation. You’ve done justice to the fabric as well as the pattern. Well done.

    Blessings.

    1. Thank you Becky,
I’m glad you like the way I made Molly’s new dress. I appreciate your kind words about it. Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Hi Jeanne … Happy Sunday! I love Molly’s new dress. You have done it once again. I really enjoyed reading yesterdays blog. It shows you care and that is very important and people like me really appreciate it. I’m always amused when people take pictures of their items for sale and don’t bother with the little things. There was recently an outfit listed on ebay… it actually was cute so I clicked it to get a better look. When I did I noticed the doll had her shoes on the wrong feet. It made me wonder if the seller didn’t care or didn’t notice. Then it quickly made it wonder what else was lacking in the outfit she was selling. I moved on. Oh well, just saying. I appreciate the little touches that make a dolly outfit stand out. Thanks so much for sharing all you tips.
    Have an awesome day!

    1. HI Ingrid and happy Sunday back to you!
Thank you so much for your compliments on Molly’s dress and on my presentation yesterday. I’ve done the exact same thing as you did… seeing something on Ebay but because of some little something that was slightly off, I decided to pass.
I hope you learned something from my presentation…that’s what I was hoping for…
      Thank you Ingrid,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. You were right about the way the skirt gathered. This fabric and this dress go together so well. The fabric was a wonderful gift — we’ve all enjoyed it so much. You were right about having a nice supply of shoes so that you’d always have the right ones. The petticoat adds just the smallest touch of sparkle.

I enjoyed the comments about detail — Ingrid’s today about the shoes on the wrong feet, and one the other day about un-ironed clothes. Ironing makes such a difference. One of the many things I love about Jeanne’s outfits is the way they arrive, perfectly ironed and packed so that they arrive without a wrinkle.

It’s Sunday. I hope it’s a lovely day for everyone.

    1. HI Marilyn,
Yes, this fabric gathered wonderfully and it was a joy to sew. Once I got all the pieces cut out and pretty well sewn together I could relax a bit… knowing that I had enough fabric for all the pieces I needed and there were no flaws to have to work around.
I debated about putting her black and white saddle shoes on, but in the end decided I liked the navy ones best with the dress.
Thank you for your very kind comments on my outfits Marilyn. I do appreciate your sweet compliments. I want my things to arrive at everyone’s house, just the way I want them to arrive at MY house… with as few wrinkles as possible!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Linda’s bows on the braids sounds perfect. Molly is ready to roll.
Is the church yard sale next weekend? How’s the weather look? Have a wonderful Sunday.

    1. HI Joy,
I did take Linda’s advice and will include 2 sets of ribbons for Molly’s hair. Fortunately I had both the yellow and the red ribbons in my stash. :o)
The yard sale is the 29th and the 30th… we are really hoping for nice weather… it’s a little too far out to really see a forecast just yet, but in a few days we’ll probably know something.
Thanks Joy, I did have a nice Sunday and hope you did too!
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thanks so much Shara,
Some ladies just dread tying a bow in the back of a doll dress, but this way it solves that problem. I’m glad you liked it… Thanks so much!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. What a darling dotty dress, Jeanne! This is a fine execution of your seamstress’ skills, and does wonderful justice to Mary’s vintage material. I’m sure she will be very pleased. I love the finished look with the full gathered skirt, the scrunched sash and big beautiful bow. This just says, “Molly,” and it looks perfect with her blue T-strap shoes. The sparkly slip adds just a bit of festivity and helps the skirt stand out so nicely. I can’t wait to hear Molly’s story and see how you complete the accessorizing. I also think it would be interesting if you could show us how you gathered the sash at the sides in a mini tutorial. Congratulations on another charming creation!

    1. Thank you Anne, for all your sweet thoughts on Molly’s newest dress. It was fun for me to take a picture and try to replicate it as much as possible. I think it turned out pretty close to the picture. The fabric is so lightweight and the slip really does help it stand out very nicely.
The sash was about 4″ wide and I just marked the front of it with a pin. I held the sash up to Molly and marked with 2 pins were the side seams were. Then I took a needle and thread and hand basted up the sides of the sash and pulled the threads up. It gathered it up and then I went back and forth through my gathers a few times and knotted it on the backside. Then I did the same thing for the other side. It was very easy, but it gave the front some folds that will sort of stay in place as it stays that way. I hope that little bit helps you understand how it was done.
      Thanks so much Anne,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. I’m always *amazed* that you can create perfection from a picture! There isn’t ONE detail that I don’t like…. including the buttons on the back! 🙂 I just got home from camping a week – and, will anxiously await the ‘final reveal’! 🙂 It’s really been FUN watching the process of this outfit! thank you SO much!

    1. Thank you so much for the fabric that started this whole dress, Mary! I’m so happy that you like the way it turned out. I think Molly really likes it too! :o) Thanks for your sweet comments!
I hope you had fun camping last week… we used to do that when the kids were little.
I should be thanking you for the opportunity to make this from YOUR fabric…
      Blessings, Jeanne
