Locker Hooking for my new craft project…

*** Don’t forget: Patsy’s dress on eBay, ends this evening… you can see it HERE.

Remember a few days ago when I told you March was National Craft Month? I took it “seriously” and decided to try something I haven’t ever done before…which can be a challenge because I’ve done almost everything… cross stitch, counted cross stitch, crewel embroidery, silk ribbon embroidery, punch needle, smocking, quilting, paper pieced quilting blocks, sewing, macrame, origami, making pillows, food gifts in a jar, and more things than you can imagine.
I haven’t ever made soap and I leave the jewelry making to Rebecca! But if someone challenges me to try something, I WILL give it a whirl.

S-O… I decided I’d look for a new craft to help celebrate March being National Craft Month. I was looking on Pinterest and found these wonderful looking rugs and coasters and purses and wall hangings and realized I had bought a trivit one time at a craft show a few years back, with the sole purpose of taking it apart and seeing how they did it. I did take it party apart but I never could figure out how it was made.

But as I saw all these pictures of beautiful “scrappy” looking things, I was pretty sure my trivet was locker hooked. I’m not even sure how to explain it except you use the rug canvas type stuff and you use 3/4″ wide strips of scraps to go in and out of the holes and around piece of cotton string laid on the grids.

I looked at the book at Hobby Lobby and thought it looked like a pretty good teaching book, but as far as explaining how to do it…. I’ll have to tell you later.

I just wanted to show you what I got. It looks fun and I certainly have LOTS of scraps…

… so this could be a fun craft project to take on a long trip or a fun thing to do while you are mindlessly watching TV…

These are a few of the projects in the book…

I’m going to give it a try and see what I think. Anyone going to try any new craft for the month of March?

If you missed the one reply I was able to leave on Marilyn’s comment yesterday, you saw that I was at the hospital all day long with my mom having a procedure on her leg. I was having trouble getting connected to their wi-fi service and spent most of the day without it. My mom’s surgery was a complete success but the doctor decided to keep her there over night. Deb, my younger sister came up to be with us but unfortunately we weren’t able to have our “beauty” party because it was almost 11 p.m. when we left the hospital. We were pooped out and have to be back at the hospital at 7 a.m. in the morning as she’s supposed be discharged. We’ll do our makeup thingy another time…
Thank you all for your kind words and comments that you did leave. I’ll go back through them and see if any questions need to be answered.

*** Don’t forget Patsy’s “Easter Sweetness” ends this evening on Ebay. You can see it HERE.

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. I’m so glad your mother is doing OK and being discharged today. Were you completely out of an online services all day? If so, how did that go? I don’t even have a phone, so can’t imagine using it all the time like so many others, but they do say after awhile, you feel very free!Yep, I’m one of “those’ people who have never gotten a phone, if you can imagine! Probably not!

I love that new craft you have discovered! Lot’s of times crafts are wonderful, but then what do you do with all the duplicates? This certainly gives you a variety of uses and looks, so that you aren’t making the same thing over and over. It looks like the last one is a Christmas ornament! now that one I might do!

    1. Hi Linda,
My mom was discharged this morning and we are at home now having a movie marathon! She is doing great and very glad to be back at home.
Being without my phone working was not that fun for me, but Deb had her phone so she kept me in the loop. I can’t imagine you not having a phone and I only recently got one that does more than just take phone calls. It has helped me with my business…
The last one IS an ornament and I like it very much too. I can’t wait to give it a try…

  2. I’ve intended to experiment with Tennerieffe lacemaking for a long time – have collected ‘info’ and supplies, but, haven’t started, yet…. then, a couple of weeks ago, I ‘discovered’ a lady in Turkey doing ‘oya’ – which I had not heard of before…Now, I wanna experiment with THAT! :-/ she has an Etsy shop – https://www.etsy.com/shop/ColorsofRengin she had posted some things for sale on a Crazy Quilting group I belong to. Sure is inspiring – lots of YouTube videos on the technique, too… if you search for ‘oya needle lace’. sigh – too many excellent things to learn… so little time.
I’m happy your mom is doing well – we’re taking mom with us to our dulcimer jam today. She really enjoyed another on Thursday and asked to go today, again! 🙂
My doll show/sale is tomorrow – THEN, I can get back to a ‘normal schedule’ and, back to some sewing!

    1. I Mary,
I will have to look up that Etsy shop and see what oya is. It sounds intriguing.
I hope you did well at your doll show today… And made lots of money….to buy more dolls!
      Thanks Mary,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. I’ve never heard of locker hooking before, and like you, I’ve done a ton of different craft techniques. I think my favorite illustration is the cabbage rose pillow. Gorgeous!

My new craft for March is doing what I call bead stitching, but others refer to it as bead weaving. I’m doing mainly bracelets, and it’s really fun and addictive. I can usually complete one in a day or day and a half. The tricky part is using sometimes 3+ yards of beading thread on the needle and then having to go in and out of the beads several times. It can get confusing, but the illustrated tutorials out there are wonderful!

Too bad your mother had to spend the night in the hospital, but glad her surgery went well. I’m sure you and your sisters will take good care of her while she is convalescing.

Good luck mastering your new craft!

    1. Hi Karen,
I like the cabbage roll pillow probably the favorite too. I have seen bead weaving and think it’s very pretty.
We are having a good day watching movies…
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. I’m glad your mother was kept overnight in the hospital so they could monitor her rather than discharge her right away. Also glad that she will be discharged today. You take such good care of your family.

I had some fun to thank you for yesterday. I had looked up the Ginny wardrobe on eBay and just on a flyer, bid $20 for one for my Ten Ping, kind of forgot about it and was very surprise to win it! I thought it was just the wardrobe, but when it arrived yesterday, there was a perfect little doll and the wardrobe was completely stuffed with shoes, ice and roller skates, boots and all kinds of clothes. I won’t sew for Ginny but the set will be fun for my granddaughter.

Looking forward to see the dress for Rebecca as it looks so pretty already.

    1. Hi Susette,
Congrats on your new dolly wardrobe for Ten Ping. You both will enjoy it…and oh how fun to have extra goodies inside…
No sewing today, but maybe soon…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I’m sorry to hear about your mom. I hope everything will go well for her. I didn’t know March was national craft month, but don’t think I’ll be starting any new crafts right now. I have several things I need to finish up first. I am not familiar with locker hooking, but some of the book illustrations are really pretty. You’ll have to let us know how it goes. I smiled when I read that you saw it on Pinterest–I find Pinterest is a great source of inspiration for so many neat projects.

    1. Hi Carolyn,
My mom is doing just fine and really happy to be home.
The last thing I really needed was another craft to get nvolved in, but I did….so….
It’s easy to get inspiration on Pinterest…and lose a couple hours too! :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Marilyn Grotzky

I’m glad your mom’s surgery went well and I hope her recovery is fast and painless.

Hospital memories. As I said yesterday, I’ve been cleaning bookshelves and dusting books. My copy of the now classic The Feast of Santa Fe (Huntley Dent) is sort of spotty instead of neatly clean, like most of the others. It was in an automobile accident with me years ago. While I was in the hospital I cleaned off most of the blood and honey (from a large jar that didn’t break but just opened and poured its contents all over me) but had to toss the dust jacket. There is a particular kind of scar you get from hitting a windshield while wearing glasses — now and then I see someone else with one and ask about it — we all have similar stories.

I just checked out Mary C.’s link (above) and have favorited the entire store. I have seen oya once in real life but never for sale so this is wonderful. I knew what it was from an article in Piecework magazine. If you like needlework of all kinds or are looking for a new craft for National Craft Month, you might like Piecework http://www.interweave.com/Magazines/ or, for that matter, some of the other magazines from Interweave Press.

Paula said yesterday she’d check out the Laura Child’s tea shop books. She also has a series featuring scrapbooking. The reviews of the tea shop ones say that a couple of the most recent ones seem to have been written by someone else, so try for one of the earlier ones. I think she’s up to 18, so there are a lot to choose from.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
You have the greatest stories…and I love it when you share them with us! I am going to have to check out Mary’s etsy store too…
There are too many things to do and too little time to do the. *sigh*
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Bet your mom will be so glad to go home. Not the best sleep in hospitals. Hope she recovers quickly.
I’m so far behind that I didn’t even know it was National Craft Month. I like the pillow best too. Now, I’ll have to look up bead weaving and lace making. No wonder my house needs cleaning. 🙂

    1. Hi Joy,
My mom is very happy to be home and we are having a great time visiting. Too bad we lose an hour of time tonight…we’ll miss an hour of visiting…
I hope everyone has enjoyed hearing about these fewnewcrafts…
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Hope your mom is recovering well at home now. She’s in good hands with her daughters!
There’s nothing as precious as the well being of mothers.

Shock, shock…I think I would be interested in learning the loop, hook and lock ! It looks interesting as long as there’s no sewing and depending on the size of the craft, I’d be willing to try a small project to see if I liked it. I don’t normally do crafts unless they can be done fairly quickly. The idea of working on something and being creative (in my capacity) when we travel would be great. Thanks Jeanne for the inspiration.
I’m heading to a book store today to find the Laura Child’s Tea Books. Marilyn, I will look at the older ones first. Thank you.
    Have a great Saturday!

    1. Hi Paula,
I’ll have to let ou know how it goes…I haven’t had a chance to do anything with it yet… I think it would be a good “travel” craft…
We are having a great time watching movies…
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Hi Jeanne,
I’m sorry to hear Mom needed surgery, happy she is doing well and home under your loving care. Girls night will have to wait until she’s feeling better I guess. Craft month huh? Neat I love the idea of starting something new! I’m smiling because I already know whatever it is I will lose interest and it will sit unfinished. You did inspire me to get my sewing out so even though it’s not a new craft I am doing something 🙂 Love your new craft can’t wait to see pictures of what you decided to make.
    Enjoy your Sunday!
    Ingrid

    1. Hi Ingrid,
First of all, I am thrilled that you are sewing again and you might be the smart one who recognizes not to start something new so you don’t end up with unfinished projects…boy could I learn a thing or two from you..thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne
