Little Cabinet, Big Cabinet and 4 rows of Pintucks…

Today was another busy day…I painted little cabinets and big cabinets, made pintucks and a hat, cooked spaghetti and got Patsy’s dress listed on Ebay.

After seeing Ten Ping’s wardrobe in pictures yesterday, I thought it looked too spotty where the gold Rub-n-Buff was too heavy on the roses… so I used my white Rub-n-Buff and toned them down a bit… here’s a picture to show you side by side the difference..

[If you click on the picture, it will show up larger and you can see the details better.]

I like it much better as it’s not so “polka dottie” looking… :o)

Next my hubby asked me if he took the red cabinet outside, could I paint it? After that wonderful China cabinet he got me for Valentine’s Day, (HERE) how could I possibly say no… It was a gorgeous day outside and he was working on painting our chicken brooder… (yep, we’re getting new baby chicks in about 2 weeks…) My hubby took the top doors off and used one of those hinges to fix the bottom door that broke when the cabinet fell over. Now the top will just be used like bookshelves and the bottom will have two working doors!

I had bought a mis-matched gallon of paint last year at Lowe’s for $5.00 and it was supposed to be the color of the dab of paint on top of the lid…a dark red. I had never opened it and was always going to use it to touch up the red cabinet sometime… the “dab” looked about the same color but just a little brighter… WELL…when I opened up the can, it wasn’t anywhere near red…it was magenta… you know the brightest hot pinkish magenta you’ve ever seen. I thought maybe it just needed to be stirred… but after 4 or 5 minutes of stirring, I realized…it was staying magenta…

So I turned to Plan B… find something else! I found a quart of a bluish gray paint and decided to go a different route. My hubby liked it and so I started on it. The cabinet had a lot of “surface” area so it took me longer than I thought it would. But anyway, I got 2 coats on it and will finish it on Sunday. I’m going to make it look “not so one-color” like. You’ll have to wait and see, but here’s the old red color and the new blue color…

I don’t know why I’m showing you 2 pictures of each color, but I am… :o)

After it dried my hubby moved it inside. Time to switch from painter to seamstress and cook!

I needed to turn my attention to finishing Patsy’s dress and figure out what kind of hat she wanted to wear with her new Easter dress… She picked a muffin style hat and that went together pretty quickly. I decided to add 4 rows of pintucks to the bottom of her dress… It does shorten it somewhat but I probably should have just made 2 small growth tucks in it…it would have been faster… oh well..
I took some pictures of her with her new Easter Village houses and she didn’t want to pose for me…she wanted to play…

We finally made it through the photo session and here are a few shots of her… I decided I’m going to go ahead and make a tulle slip to go under it too… that will hold it out more. The pintucks seem to make the dress lay in folds instead of just falling in a circle around her legs… the slip will help…

Isn’t paint wonderful — old and tired becomes new again.
The pintucks are exactly right. They change the length very little, but add just what is needed to move the dress from a nice Sunday best outfit to a real Easter outfit, proving once again, if we needed to have it proved, that details matter. Congratulations on a lovely productive day.

    1. HI Marilyn,
Yes, paint IS wonderful and it’s just about the cheapest way you can change something up.

I think the pintucks around the hem give it a little extra something too… Glad you agree! It was a productive day and hope I can get something done today too!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. You were “spot on” about modifying the little wardrobe! I love the new look!!

The blue cabinet turned out great! I don’t know how you can get so much done in a day – painting, sewing, and cooking! You are amazing!!

    1. HI Karen,
I loved your little play on words…”spot on” or maybe it should now be “spot off!” :o)

I’m hoping to get the blue cabinet finished today…my hubby doesn’t want to put it in the garage now…he might use it in his office… :o) again!
      Thank you,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. I’m liking the wardrobe so much better now. Good job. Love the painted cabinet without the top doors. Hope someone will anchor the cabinet to the wall with a bracket. Coming from CA earthquake country. 🙂 Can’t wait to see how you accessorize it. And those pin tucks really add interest to the skirt as well as shortening it a bit. Sweet little hat to match too. This is a perfect outfit for Patsy.

    1. Thank you Joy,
I like the wardrobe much better too… I don’t know if Ten Ping noticed or not… oh well…
I don’t know where we are putting the cabinet right now…but my hubby is liking it enough he wants to keep it in the house, not the garage…
Thank you for your sweet words on Patsy’s dress…
      Blessings, Jeanne

    Good Sunday afternoon, Jeanne !
I am loving Patsy’s dress & hat ensemble. Very springy and fresh. It’s happiness just to look at her. The delicate lace edging on the sleeves and bottom of the dress are a perfect touch because they are light and airy. Just what we are all needing now at the very end of the winter blahs. I can’t ever seem to find lace like that. It’s is so light and dainty.
I do love the blue on your cabinet. I think when you do your rubbing off and the red shows through it will be a nice touch to your country theme. Funny how those things just seem to work out.
We continue on here with more chemo and prayers for remission and strength.

    1. HI Jeannie,
I was just thinking of you yesterday. I was in Walmart….(in the fabric department of course!) and passed by this row of fabrics…and up on the top was the purple butterflies fabric… I immediately thought of you. I should have sent you a hello last night…but I didn’t.
Your last line says it all… I’m so sorry for this time in you and your hubby’s life… May the Lord give you strength and grace to carry on each day…
      Love you,
      Jeanne

  5. The blue paint is a great color…can’t wait to see what else you do to it..your details always make such a difference . Maybe not pin tucks though ?…(my attempt at humor today)

It’s to be near 70 here so we dragged our huge hibiscus outside to wash off the nasty whiteflies that always seem to come this time of year.. I just can’t lose it now .it has been such a bright spot all winter!

    1. HI Kathie,
I like this blue color too… it was a no-name color on a quart of paint from Wal Mart too… When it’s gone, it’s gone… although I could take a piece of it and Lowe’s could match it up… My hubby is really liking the new blue color…
      (I liked your humor today!)

70 degrees! Wow… we might hit 67 on Wednesday…it will soon be Spring everywhere!
Can’t wait! Keep on babying your hibiscus… I love them…
      Thanks so much Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. I’m finally getting “my say” after working in the yard today! Yesterday was nice, but awfully windy for what I wanted to do, but today is perfect! Are you ready for almost a whole week of rain now, Jeanne?

I think you did a wonderful job on that little wardrobe! It looks much better now, and like you say, not so “polka dottie”. Funny how a little tweaking can make such a difference!

Your cabinet looks wonderful too! You say that is going in the garage?? Surely not! It is really a nice piece and would look wonderful in a bedroom with a couple of small accent lamps and some books and knick knacks, next to a comfy chair for a little reading nook!

Oh Patsy’s dress—-just adorable! I just love the pin tucks and the delicate lace! The fabric colors are so soft and sweet, and the little roses and bows at the waist are just adorable! I don’t see any petticoat though, and you didn’t seem to mention it on Ebay. I think it will do the job perfectly!

    1. HI Linda,
Yes, it was windy here too yesterday. George had to make a 2×4 brace to hold my cabinet from blowing over… it almost went over once…
Glad you liked the little wardrobe re-done.. me too!
Well, the cabinet was originally going in the garage, but George is liking it very much and he wants to keep it in the house somewhere… so we’ll see… We’ve had that ever since we got married…it’s been yellow, red and now blue!

I just mentioned on Ebay that I would be making a slip…but didn’t have time to get one made before I listed it. It will just be one of my little tulle slips and will really help hold the dress out.. and maybe show off the pantalettes a little better…
      Thanks Linda…
Of the two days for us, yesterday was nicer…today is just a bit on the cool side, but if you’re working outside, today is probably better…
      Blessings, Jeanne
