Julie’s “Springtime Sweetness” dress revealed…

I may have had troubles with Ten Ping’s tunic last night, but I managed to switch gears and get Julie’s new 70’s Spring dress finished. It truly was fun to make this one and if I had blonde hair, it would look like a little archived Jeanne Marie dress! I think Julie looks pretty sweet in it with her very blonde hair and her beautiful suntan! This first view of her dress is without a slip, and looks pretty similar to the pattern picture.

Remember, this is the dress I was copying from my 1974 pattern book…

I thought maybe it could use a light weight tulle slip to hold it out just a tiny bit.

…but it was much TOO puffy and made it look like a square dance skirt.

So I made a less “fluffy” half slip and it was better…

…plus a denim shoulder strap purse with some felt flowers on it… definitely flowers!

My satellite data was all used up, and it was like using dial up to just get these pictures for this post on here, but it gets reloaded at midnight Wednesday night, so I will do my best to get it listed on Ebay on Thursday evening.

See you tomorrow,

  1. How cute, Jeanne! It turned out very well, and it looks like Julie is ready to go shopping, maybe JoAnn’s? Yes, that second slip is much better, I don’t remember wearing crinolines underneath dresses in the 70’s!—although I did belong to a square dance group while in the 50’s in high school.
Isn’t this weather wonderful? I got a lot done in the yard yesterday, finally!

    1. Hi Linda,
Thanks for liking Julie’s dress…and yes, maybe WE should go shopping at JoAnn’s…it’s been a while since I’ve been there. I have to force myself to stay away sometimes. I may make a little satiny slip that is even less full than the second one I made. I looked at the pattern picture again and the dress sort of clings to the thighs…so maybe no slip or just barely one.

This weather is wonderful!! My hubby rented a stump grinder and worked from 8:00 yesterday morning until 9:30 last night grinding down stumps and trees that needed to be flush with the ground. It was grueling and very monotonous! But it makes our yard level now in places that have had a hump for a few years. YAY!

  2. Hi Jeanne. My mom worked at a little square dance shop and sewed endless costumes so your comment gave me a little chuckle because those skirts are FULL.

Julies’s spring dress is very cute and so perfect for her. She is going to hate parting with this one as it is so authentic to her era. Great job of looking at a drawing and making it into a dress. I don’t know how you do it.

    Enjoy your day, Jeanne!

    1. Thanks Cindy,
I’m rethinking the whole slip thing and may just make something very simple and maybe nothing at all… I’ll see when I get ready to list it.

I’ll bet your mom was the queen of ruffles. Do you know how to square dance?
It’s supposed to be 75 today but it’s not looking like it right now…

  3. So cute as always Jeanne. I worked this vintage pattern up some years ago to fit the Kaye Wiggs MSD but I changed the skirt to a gathered one. Love seeing your creations!

    1. Hi Marsha,
I think I might remember your dresses for Nyssa a few years back. I always loved this pattern. It’s so feminine looking.
      Thanks for your kind comments.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Good morning Jeanne,
What an adorable dress for Julie. The fabric is so pretty and springy. I have never seen that pattern.
Yesterday I got to dress my AMG dolls in your outfits. Or I should say, exchange dresses between the girls. They had so much fun trying all of your clothes on. The green spring dress w/ necklace and gloves is just gorgeous. I will send a picture when I can find a nice background.
    Have a blessed day!!

    1. Hi Paula,
Thanks so much…yep, it’s in the pattern book, and I made it several times.

I’m so happy you liked your dresses you bought from me. Really, do send me some pictures of your girls in them. I’d love to see who got what dress.
I’ll have a nice day…you do the same!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Julie’s dress is really cute, definitely the 70’s. The fabric and trim are so pretty together.

    1. Thank you Regina,
I’m very pleased with how it turned out… and it does bring back high school memories.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. This is a sweet dress. I really enjoy looking at all the wonderful outfits you create. You have such a good eye for details that work well together and your talent for construction is inspiring. (Not that I can actually sew well … I just wish I could.)

Do you have a template for cutting the felt flowers, or do you get them from someone? They really add just the right detail.

    1. HI Kathleen,
Thank you very much for your sweet comments on Julie’s dress. I love yellow and blue together, so this was especially fun for me to make up. The little felt flowers are just die cut and you can get them on Ebay, Etsy or sometimes craft shops. I buy them whenever I see ones I like the design of.

The Julie flower dress is just wonderful. I am so charged up to get into the sewing room and start pulling fabrics. The purse, the trims and add the perfect sandals and I am back in the 1970’s. Those were the years that my babies came so I was one busy mommy but I did find time to sew. I think I mentioned yesterday that I had made that same dress in the long version. I wore it to a cousin wedding as long dresses were the fashion then. They had a dance during the reception and that dress twirled around making me feel quite smart!!
It will be fun to watch this dress on eBay. Congratulations on the Molly birthday dress sale. Very nicely done!

    1. HI Jeannie,
I’m happy with the way Julie’s dress turned out too…and I remember my dress having that “twirly” skirt too! It was fun! I did more sewing in the 70’s than probably any other time in my life too!
      Thanks Jeannie,
I just got it listed on Ebay for this evening… now to clean some house…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. I loved wearing the 70’s long dresses. It was a time of more freedom for women and social upheaval. it seemed strange that we went back to the long lengths, but I fondly remember how it felt to wear the long skirts. Fun to see you recreate the styles for your dolls. Good news on the doll front. Ten Ping is on her way to me from TX.

    1. Hi Jan,
I enjoyed the fashions of the 70’s too…they seemed so easy to wear and SO comfortable! It was nice!
My Ten Ping is on the way from TX too! I can hardly stand the wait… I better get her something cute made… guess I’ll try one of my patterns I did for An Mei and see how that works.
Blessings to you as we Wait together! ~ Jeanne
