It’s tough when your mom is a seamstress…

My kids grew up taking their naps on the floor beside my sewing machine. I wasn’t a bad mom; I just sewed a lot and they liked to be around me, so pallets and blankets on the floor were commonplace. There were some drawbacks to having a mom who sewed like I did… my kids were my guinea pigs…they had to try out all my “latest creations…”

Here’s a good example… BARNEY… remember him? That purple and green dinosaur? Well one year my kids got matching sweatsuits made by me with appliqued Barney’s on the front along with their very own stuffed Barney doll. Today they are mortified if they see that picture.

Of course there are other times when their mom was slightly more reserved and “normal” with her creations… Here are two more examples… a sweet Christmas knickers set for Kristoffer and Rebecca got a darling green velvet jumper one year…see… N-O-R-M-A-L! I can do normal!

  1. Jeanne, your children are adorable ! I see your very dark brown hair so where does the red hair come from???
I can identify with sewing every possible waking moment especially when the kids take their afternoon nap. When my kids were in grade school I ran a daycare out of my house. When the little kids napped I sewed Cabbage Patch doll clothes. That work took us through one Christmas. I remember the door bell ringing that morning and a few little girls showing up at the door with a parent in tow. They had received their doll that morning and knew I was the the “Cabbage Patch lady”. I sold out before 10am on Christmas morning and fortunately no one else showed up and had to leave empty handed. I would have felt terrible. I remember being so grateful for having the ability to sew those little doll clothes because I am not sure we would have had a Christmas that year. All was good !!!!

    1. Hi Jeannie,
My mom had red hair when she was younger so she “claims” it came from her! Now her hair is white, but she still claims it came from her…
It sounds like we are pretty much alike in how we did our sewing… Cabbage Patch and all! You did see my post on the Cabbage Patch dolls didn’t you?
Yep, sometimes we have gotten by on my sewing too.

  2. You can see that a cute and pretty gene runs in your family. No wonder you liked sewing for the kids — those kids would look great in anything.

I have heard that if one parent has brown hair and the other blond, children sometimes have red hair. My blond sister and her dark haired husband have 2 red headed sons. When I used to take them shopping, people looked at me with such envy. A young neighbor of theirs, a blond girl, used to come with them, disguised as my middle son, in the usual uniform — cut offs, a tee shirt, tennis shoes, and a short, bouncy haircut, and people thought that I had the three cutest boys in the world. Now they are grown up — at least we get to keep the memories and the photos.

    1. HI Marilyn,
My mom who was red headed before her hair turned white, used to get all sorts of looks at her 4 children who all had dark hair. It’s funny…all my nieces, nephews, cousins, all my relatives have dark hair except my 2 kids who have red hair.
I REALLY used to get stopped a LOT when my kids were little… I almost felt guilty if I was out with someone who had a brown or blond headed kid….as my kids got all the comments…
      I loved it!
      Thank you Marilyn,

  3. Jeanne,

What adorable children you have! Well, I do realize they are all grown up now, but they sure were cute when they were small! I too, sewed a lot of my children’s clothes when they were small. It was fun to have those darling mother-daughter outfits, then trying to make a vest or something to go with it for my son. One Christmas I waited until the last minute to get the house decorated and tree up, because I was so busy with the Christmas outfits and getting them done! I did manage—-barely!

I’m not sure how close together your children are, they do look close, but mine were just 19 months apart, and sometimes I could sew them both an outfit with the same pattern! I managed to make a darling set of sailor outfits for them one Easter, Jennifer had the dress and Brian the little short pants outfit. So cute! Those were the days!

    1. HI Linda,
Yes, talk about the mother daughter dresses… Rebecca and I certainly had our fair share of those. I used to love to dress alike or at least coordinated somehow. I used to make Kristoffer all kinds of short set and always a ball cap to go with it. I bought all different colored T shirts and high top tennies… he was a cutie dressed up. I did make a few knicker sets that were adorable to me, but not quite boyish enough for my hubby… Talk about getting the comments, when Kristoffer was dressed up in a little old fashioned sailor set, like your son, it was crazy the compliments he’d get.
My kids are 3 years apart… but Rebecca is taller than Kristoffer so some people think she is the oldest…
Yes, dressing up your kids…those were the days!

  4. What darling little ones and a pretty pretty mother. They look adorable in their outfits. Don’t you wish you could hold them again like we moms did at one time?
    I enjoyed seeing your pictures.

    1. Hi Paula,
Sometimes I do wish they could be little again… then I’d be skinny again too! Wouldn’t life be wonderful???
      Thanks so much!
      Blessings, Jeanne
