Don’t you just LOVE a doll in a straw hat?

Before today’s post, I wanted to let you see a few pictures of what I added to Josefina’s dress set before I listed it on Ebay. I had an embroidered basket that I added a strap to and it worked perfectly with some big juicy apples in it. Becky suggested the title for the auction as “Apple Delight” and it seemed like a perfect fit when I put it all together… It’s listed on Ebay now and you can see it by clicking HERE. You can also click on the picture at the right side bar and it will take you to the Ebay listing.

I was looking through my pictures and noticed quite a few dolls wearing straw hats as an accent piece to their dresses. I never really paid any attention to how many hats I have actually decorated, but after a bit of time categorizing my pictures, I realized I’ve decorated a TON of hats! Some are simple and some are quite elaborate; some are pretty crummy looking on the dolls and some are photographed fairly decently. I thought it might be fun to just show a slide show of some of them… see if you can pick out your favorite… let me tell you though, it’ll be hard… and this isn’t even all of them. Yikes!

I’m going out of town with my mom to go see my brother so I hope straw hats will keep you occupied for the next few days. I have more to show you! I have to get some things ready and won’t have to sew anything… well, I might sew on something, but I won’t have time to take any pictures of it. I hope you don’t mind some eye candy for a few days…

I’ll still be around, just busy… but I’ll check in…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings,Jeanne

  1. Josefina’s basket of apples is just the cutest little prop, and perfect for her new outfit! That outfit is so cute and colorful, that you really don’t need to have a Josefina in order to buy it! I think it could look good on a great many other dolls too!

The straw hats are just darling! I see most are decorated with flowers, which I presume you have sewn onto the hat? I still am trying to figure out how to attach feathers to a felt hat without the glue showing, or do I sew them? How in the world do you sew a feather, or feathers onto a felt hat that looks good?

I didn’t look at dolls all that much at the store, since I have enough for me! Oh, if I had unlimited space, I might get more, but it’s the clothes and accessories that I look at more now. I really do prefer the older outfits and accessories compared to the more modern things, which are too plastic-y for me—in addition to pricey!

I hope your brother is feeling much better and you have a good time!

    1. HI Linda,
Thanks so much for your kind compliments on Josefina’s dress set. She is standing on my cutting table just “smiling” at all the other girls… and looking so pretty! I’m glad she was next on my list!

Most of the flowers are hot glued onto the hats…I would definitely SEW feathers on your felt hat. The glue can be a little tricky and it might make the felt stiff where it is placed. Just stitch the feathers in place with the same color thread as your feather and whip stitch around the feather a few times to hold it in place. I’ve stitched feathers onto cowboy hats before. Just go round and round the feathers and then fluff your feathers up. You’ll never see the stitches…except on the inside.

My brother and his wife were the only ones who got sick…but I woke up this morning with a terrible sore throat… I hope it’s gone by Saturday!
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Your hats are a wonderful addition to your dolls outfits. I continue to be amazed at the beauty of your ensembles.

    And…”Apple Delight”…well, that was fun!

    1. HI Becky,
Thanks again for your suggestion of “Apple Delight” for Josefina’s dress set. I think it was the perfect title!
I appreciate your kind words about my doll hats. I wonder how many hats I’ve made or decorated? Lots is all I know!
      Thanks Becky,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Josefina’s little basket of apples was the perfect finishing touch to her outfit.
Oh, I absolutely love hats , on dolls and on people. Unfortunately I was born too late for proper headwear to be in style, so I indulge by having my dolls wear hats. Felicity and Elizabeth are made for hats. I really like the picture where you actually to Elizabeth to the garden to photograph her. My what a difference between your first and second Felicity. I can spot the “German” ones so easily now.
I was just thinking that with all you loving doll dresses I bet Rebecca had a dolly wardrobe for her dolls that didn’t end as a child. Do you have pictures of those you could share? The things my grandmother made for me are so special and my mom sewed some clothes for me, but didn’t do doll clothes until my daughter had PC. I agree with Linda, the old PC clothing and accessory sets with the wood, china and glass are wonderful, but the new plastic stuff isn’t worth it. I did get Rebecca’s curling iron for Samantha because it is metal and very cute.
I hope you enjoy your visit with your brother

    1. Thanks Laura,
I am someone who loves hats too. I used to wear a little gray wool beret hat all the time when I was away at school. And one of my first Easter’s before I was even married to my hubby I was wearing a straw hat. I should find that picture! I also used to have a navy velvet hat sort of like Samantha’s burgundy hat that I wore.

Actually Rebecca wasn’t much of a doll person. She got her AG doll when she was 9, but it was her doll that catapulted me into making and selling doll clothes at our local Farmer’s Market. We sold her doll clothes on Ebay a few years ago. I wasn’t into the doll business like I am now. But I sure did sew a lot for Rebecca when she was little.

I’m looking forward to seeing my brother and his family.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. What a fun post getting to see all the hats. I love hats for dolls and people too. Each hat is perfect for the different outfits you made each doll.
Josefina looks like she just came back from the apple orchard with her little basket. She and her mother are going to make something “apple” scrumptious for the family’s dinner tonight? I really don’t know Josefina’s story to even suggest what she has in mind for the apples.

The first picture of Elizabeth – that red and white dress and hat are spectacular!! Also, the one that has the green paisley-kind-of print and the hat on her is gorgeous as well. That is a cool style.
And of course, I love the Spring green printed dress, the one that I have…that hat is gorgeous too. I like how you have it tied on the side. I’ll have to practice that on my doll.

Picking up on what Laura said about seeing the difference between the older and newer Felicity’s. I know the Felicity in the beautiful green print dress, 4th from the bottom of pictures, is the older one so are the top pictures of Felicity the newer ones? I wonder if there is a difference with older and newer Josefina’s – I forget when she came out…PC or Mattel time? I need to read up on them. It’s interesting how the dolls come about.
    Blessings!

    1. HI Paula,
Thanks for the compliments on all the hats I’ve shown… I’ve never actually looked at all the hats at one time so this was fun for me too.
I think Josefina and her mom are going to make Apple Fritters! :o)
I have 3 pictures of Elizabeth in red and white dresses and I love all three of them… it is so much fun to make doll clothes! I have the best job in the world!!!

There is a huge difference in the older and newer dolls… especially the Josefina dolls. The main thing I think to watch for in a Josefina doll is the eyebrows. I’ll just tell you this, if you look at a doll and her eyebrows are raised up like she’s scared to death, avoid that doll. I don’t know what they were thinking when they painted the eyebrows like that. (Well, that’s just my opinion, but they just look kind of strange to me…) Find one that has the eyebrows down closer to her eyes. The second thing is the hair… look for one that has long hair that you can play with.

The 2nd and 3rd pictures are of my earlier Felicity’s and they were Pleasant company, but their eyes aren’t nearly as pretty as the Pleasant Company Felicity in the green and cream Colonial dress set near the bottom. I love the smaller eyes on my newest Felicity. When I look at the early pictures of Felicity in my dresses, it makes me cringe.
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thanks Joy,
I am glad you enjoyed the dolls in their hats or chapeau’s, which is such a nice word!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I still have a collection of hats and often wear them if it is a bad hair day which seems to happen too often, so I love hats on dolls and people. I lived in San Francisco for a short time twice in the 50’s and that was a very dressy city

    1. HI Jan,
I think hats are fun if you live some place where you can wear them. I’m glad you enjoy them still today! We have a few ladies at church who wear them and they always look so dressed up!
      Blessings, Jeanne

    2. SF was very dressy! My mother would take me several times a year for shopping. We lived 60 miles north so it was a special trip for us. I can remember my mother totally dressed up with gloves and “the hat”. I even wore gloves as a young girl. Christmas time was always special seeing the windows and the huge tree in the middle of the City of Paris dept. store. It was several stories high. Ah, memories.

      1. Hi Joy,
Thanks for your beautiful description of life in San Francisco… it sounded wonderful!
        Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Where in the world did you find all of the great hats? I can’t find them on eBay. What a wonderful collection. No wonder you consider sewing for dolls so much fun. Thanks for sharing all of the pictures.

    1. HI Susette,
I guess I have just been fortunate to have been in the right spot at the right time. I’ve found them on Ebay, Etsy, yard sales, estate sales, little mom and pop stores along the way, my sister had a friend how had a craft business and she sold everything… I always keep my eyes open for props and dolly things…
You are so welcome…I’m glad you enjoyed the hats today…
      Blessings, Jeanne
