Did you pick the winning fabric for Molly’s school dress?

Yesterday I showed you some fabrics that might be used to make American Girl Molly’s next school dress and asked which one you liked best. If you missed that post you can see it HERE. I got quite a few comments and emails about the fabrics but I wanted to wait all day to give everyone a chance to pick their favorite. In the meantime, I decided to go ahead and work on Molly’s blouse. The pattern that I’m copying is just a sweet white blouse with puffed sleeves, a Peter Pan collar and some kind of a tie at the neck.

I chose a white heavily embroidered cotton fabric and it turned out pretty cute. I love this fabric and think I got it at JoAnn Fabrics… It sewed up really well and has a nice crisp look to it. The collar went on fine and the sleeves went in great, but as I look at it on Molly, the bottoms of the sleeves, the cuff area, seems a bit droopy, so I think I’m going to fix it so it looks better. (I have a think for droopy sleeves.) I want them more like what’s on the pattern illustration.

Here are a few pictures of the blouse…

So….if you picked the green fabric with the green trim, you were one of the winning votes. It got 5 votes, and the green print with the little colored dots and the blue striped denim colored blue one with the yellow daisy trim came in tied for 2nd with 4 votes each.

I think I’ll add a little black and white checked ribbon tie at the neck.

Well, it doesn’t seem like much of a post today, but I was working on other things too. I’m drafting a pattern for Molly’s cute little skirt.

Just a quick update on Reuben…He’s very much in the puppy stage and his latest obsession is the toilet paper. He LOVES to jump up at it and pull it off and make a big pile… (such are the days with a “toddler!”) :o) or is it :o(

See you tomorrow,

  1. Hi Jeanne,
I ‘m first to leave a comment. That hasn’t ever happened. Molly will look very sweet in her new dress. Did you see all the pictures of Maryellen’s collection over on Playthings? A 1950’s doll is what my daughter always hoped PC would make and now AG finally has. I don’t know yet if she’ll want her so we’ll see.
Reuben looks like he is having loads of fun. You should give him some unprinted newsprint to tear up. I know our dogs as puppies had an obsession with paper.
    Have a great day!!

    1. HI Laura,
Thanks for thinking Molly will look cute in her new green jumper set. I hope she does when it’s all finished…
I have been keeping an eye on the Maryellen stuff pretty regularly…. I wish I lived closer to a store so I could see her in person…I’m still not sold on her bangs… I liked the Mamie bangs better… :o(
A while ago it was a paper plate that he got and shredded up…It’s always something…
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Hi Jeanne,
Molly’s back to school outfit is so cute. The green material chosen looks adorable with the suspenders and the black and white bow tie. It is a perfect combination.
Reuben is so funny. I’m not sure to the one who had to pick up the T.P. though! Our pets bring us such happiness even if we have to clean up their messes from time to time. He is such a cutie. I agree with your statement: ” Such are the days with a toddler.”
    Have a great day!

    1. Thanks for your comments Paula,
I”m hoping I can get it finished today… I just saw a pattern on Etsy that is exactly like what I’m trying to make… guess I should have just gotten the pattern and saved myself some time!

Yes, my little “toddler” is always into something… right when I’m trying to get something done! Oh well…. they don’t stay toddlers forever…
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. I love the fabric you used for Molly’s blouse and the green fabric is pretty..it looks more spring to me, but what do I know! Reuben is too cute! My Ginger still loves paper and she will be 5 next month. : )

    1. HI Regina,
Thanks for your compliments on Molly’s set so far… You gave me an idea that maybe I could make a little bolero or a school jacket to go over the jumper…hmmm….
      Thanks for the thought…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Oh, I LOVE the fabric choice, I LOVE the white blouse…it’s absolutely adorable, simple and perfect and I LOVE, LOVE Reuben’s little antics. I know..I’m not the one who has to clean up after him, but what a perfect display of happiness!! Be a puppy, Reuben…for as long as you can because life is short….REALLY short if you’re a dog 🙂

    Love and blessings to all

    Bobi

    1. Thanks Bobi,
I’m glad you like the green fabric and the blouse too!
Yes, Reuben is definitely a puppy… all puppy in fact!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. HI
That blouse fabric is s-o-o-o perfect! What is it about a crisp white blouse? That’s going to be a perfect grade school outfit!

    1. Hi Kathie,
I know…isn’t that fabric just wonderful? I loved it the moment I saw it!
I hope it all works out like I have it in my mind…
      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. My two cents–again after the cows came home—I think the sleeves are fine. Maybe you could stuff them with a little netting or tissue paper just to see if they are really droopy. Also, I agree, the fabric for the blouse is great. It would match any of the prints.
    Diana

    1. HI Diana,
Well, thanks for your two cents… about the sleeves being fine… but they weren’t to me, so they are already redone! I think the fabric will make lots of pretty blouses in the future…
I appreciate your comments and I may use a little tulle to lift up the sleeve cap just a bit…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. I love your white blouse and I know it will be perfect when you are finished with it. I have a thing for blue, yellow and white fabric and can’t wait to see what you make with that one!

I have to tell you a story about my Miniature Schnauzer, Gina. I rescued her from my husband’s cousin, where she was kept tied on the 4′ by 4′ back porch landing to their apartment. She was just a few months old and half perished. I took her to the vet the next day where she was given fluids and I was told she was dehydrated, malnourished and had the worst case of sarcoptic mange he’d ever seen, with hardly any hair left on her little body. I had to wear gloves and dip her in poison every day for a long time, plus give her many other medications. He told me not to expect that she would live through it. Thank God that she did! I nursed her back to health, getting rid of the mange, and we bonded strongly to each other. I had two little boys under 5 yrs. old at the time, and she was my girl. Schnauzers are so smart! She brought me only great pleasure throughout her whole lifetime. She never got into the paper shredding, but she missed so much of being a puppy because she was so very sick her first year. One Monday morning when she was about 7 years old, back in 1977, I woke to find the Sunday paper next to my bed with at least two sections completely shredded and gathered in a pile. As I picked up the mess I could only wonder what in the world she was thinking, or if something was bothering her. About a week later, I missed my ‘monthly’! Two months or so later, the OB/GYN told me I was expecting my 3rd child! Gina knew it, way before I did, and was preparing a nest for the new baby!! Very few people believed me when I told the story, but now, they’ve acknowledged that a dog’s keen sense of smell can pick up the scent of certain hormones that women produce only when they are pregnant. So just maybe the paper shredding is genetic because it has a very important purpose in a dog’s life? Enjoy your little one every minute of your lives, you are all and everything he has got. Their lives are over much too soon. For the love of dogs and dolls, Ali-AliCattDreams. 🙂

    1. Ali,
What a truly incredible story about your Gina. I can’t wait to read it to my hubby tomorrow. I believe she knew what she was doing…
Thank you for sharing that with us…
      Blessings, Jeanne
