Asparagus, Books and Chickies…

We’re going to talk about the ABC’s today… Asparagus, Books and Chickies…

First up is ASPARAGUS:
About 3 weeks ago Rebecca, (my daughter) was told she and her class partner would be the first ones to present their project at our local Farmer’s Market. She is majoring in Human Nutrition and their project was to come up with a board to present the good things about Asparagus. They had to do all kinds of research and come up with interesting facts and then they had to make a board, sort of like you did for a Science Fair project. They had to come up with a recipe and know Asparagus inside and out, so when they talked with people they knew what they were talking about. The purpose of doing this at Farmer’s Market is to make people aware of the produce you can buy fresh from the market… and also the new Link cards can be used at the market to buy produce.

The first 2 weeks it was all about gathering the information, but on Monday Rebecca asked me if I was ready for a “project?” I know what that means in our house… glue, scissors and ribbons! She bought a big green cardboard display board and got the “basics” glued on there, but she wanted my help with the “embellishing” since she knows I LOVE to embellish! (She told me last night, the girl helping her said, “I can go to Hobby Lobby and get some little things to add to our board…” Rebecca said she laughed and said, “That’s okay… my mom has everything Hobby Lobby has!”)
That’s pretty sad, but it’s pretty true…

The conversation went something like this:

“Where’s your ribbons?”

“Do you have any iron on letters?”

CIMG9609

“Do you have some checked fabric we can use for a table cloth?”

“Could we make them like little individual letters on different fabric squares?”

CIMG9592-001

“Do you have any little clothes pins?”

CIMG9602-001

“What about tiny birds?”

CIMG9604

“Do you have any jute string we can use for a “clothesline?”

“Where are your small baskets?”

CIMG9600

“Got any little veggies?”

“How about some little paperweights?”

CIMG9724

“Got any punch out designs like corner pieces from scrapbooking?”

CIMG9596-001

“You wouldn’t happen to have any miniature farm tools would you?”

CIMG9726

There were more questions, but I’ll spare you…

So we set out to “decorate” her display board. We used little ribbons to decorate the edges, scrapbooking pieces for making the pieces of paper pop, I had 2 little sections of fence that I sewed to her board, then the little birds were held on with Zots sticky dots, and much more. She printed out a picture of a bunch of asparagus and to make it 3-D, we put in on a piece of rounded cardboard and tied it on the board with a piece of jute.

Of all things, it was supposed to be windy today… I’m talking 20-30 mile an hour winds…so she had to pass on her little basket of veggies and the farm tools. Her board had to be secured to a big heavy crate that she found in the garage. She used my fabric weights to hold down the papers they were giving to the people.

It was a nice sunny day, just a bit too windy… but they survived… smiles and all…

Next up is BOOKS:
This isn’t nearly as interesting… I was just closing out my business books for the 2015 year…we are getting out taxes done on Tuesday so I had to work hours and hours on them to get them finished. There was no time for sewing today… I was only in my room to put away the things Rebecca borrowed. Bottom line…thank you everyone, for all your business in 2015!

Last up is CHICKIES:
The little chicks we are raising were taken out of our living room and to the shed yesterday. My hubby and I carried them outside in their brooder box and they now have one section of our shed all to themselves.

They were needing more “running around” room and seem to like it out there, but it was a little chilly last night. My hubby checked on them 2:00 a.m. this morning and he said they were all huddled under the heat lamps… I thought you might like to see them again…

What a busy, productive day! I was thinking that a weekly update on the chicks until they are grown would be fun, and it is. Rebecca’s project was a great start for the information board project. It will be fun for you to see what other people do. Rebecca and her partner added a great deal to the information area with their beautiful smiles and shining hair.

I can’t think of anything cheerful to say about doing taxes except it’s lovely when they are done.

Our market was nice today. It’s always good to see who’s back and who’s new. Most people set up with big blank spots, since most local crops aren’t nearly ready for sale, but the people selling ready-to-eat food had lots and the musicians had a big audience of happy listeners.

    1. Thank you Marilyn,
The chicks like their new playhouse! Lots of room to run around and play tag!
We will have to go to farmers market to see the different veggies “showcased” each week.
You got it right about the taxes!!!
Mostly what was at our market was bedding plants, jewelry, and homemade doggie treats.
      Thank you,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Happy Sunday
I had to laugh and laugh when you had all the things on Rebecca’s project list. You are a true crafter…and a very organized one?
The chickies look nice and healthy too.its amazing how fast they grow!
    Have a great week!

    1. HI Kathie,
It’s true… I had just about everything she needed or wanted. Maybe I need to weed out,,,but sue enough, a project would come along and she’d need what I just got rid of! :o)

The little chicks ARE growing fast…and eating lots too!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Lucky little chicks to have such good care. On asparagus. Chemically inherited, people respond to asparagus in differant ways.

    1. Hi Jan,
My hubby is quite the good caregiver! It doesn’t matter what kind of animal it is, he’s pretty gentle with them.
Does your comment mean you are “allergic” to asparagus?
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. What a day you had! I can’t imagine getting ANYTHING done with all the wind yesterday! It took some effort to just stand up and not topple over! It looks like Rebecca had a great resource in her mother!!! She did a great job with the poster. Too bad the little baskets couldn’t be used, but oh, I understand—–that wind!

Taxes? Michael was an accountant, so he does them the first week of February! alsready got and spent our refund!

The chicks are still cute! When do you decide who stays and who goes?

And, oh, did you hear about Hancock Fabric stores closing? Did you ever shop there much?

    1. HI Linda,
So it was windy in St. Louis too, huh? It did just about blow you over at times, and it got worse as the day went on…
Her little basket of veggies and the tools were cute, but they were just made from paper, so they would have blown away the first minute she had them on the table.

Usually we get our taxes done sooner too, but this year, we both got behind on getting our books done, so we’re a little behind.

My hubby is usually the one who culls the chickens…so he’ll decide, but the little gray colored ones are pretty cute to me… I think he’s going to give 3 of them to a young woman at our church that we always give eggs to. She has 2 young girls and they are excited about possibly having some hens and fresh eggs each day. George is trying to come up with a little coop for her with some scraps he has…so she can use it in her back yard.

Yes, I did hear about Hancock’s Fabrics stores closing. I was shocked! The closest one to me was 50 minutes away (in Cape Girardeau) and yes, I loved to shop at this one. It has lots of different fabrics that I couldn’t find anywhere else and they had a huge selection of buttons. We used to go to Cape to go antique shopping and then I always got to hit Hancock’s before we left town. It makes me sad…
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Nice to have a helpful, crafty Mom. Where’s the asparagus? Is there any at the market? The chicks have really grown. I really liked Hancock Fabrics. They closed here a few years ago. Hope you had a happy Sunday.

    1. HI Susette,
The asparagus won’t be at the market for probably 2 more weeks. They should have planned a little better and “had” what the students projects were about instead of just “telling” about it. I don’t know what veggie is next up at the market. Everyone thought Rebecca was selling the asparagus. She got asked a lot for it.
Apparently the Hancock’s stores have been in “trouble” for a few years now…
I did have a busy busy Sunday, but it was nice… I hope yours was nice too…
      Blessings, Jeanne
