Antique Piano turned into Headboard…

A few weeks ago we had a yard sale for our church and it was a huge success raising lots of money to help the many missionaries we support. (If you’d like to read that post click HERE.) We had a wonderful day on Friday and Saturday was good too, but we did have a downpour… I mean DOWNPOUR…during the afternoon and many things got wet…

We scrambled around as fast as we possibly could but some things just got drenched…one of those things was this antique piano. It was sitting over beside the side of the garage and it just got missed. It really didn’t seem that big of a deal at the time because not a single person showed even the slightest interest in it.

There it is…hidden among all the other goodies waiting to be put out on tables.

Here’s a better view of it… I was told it was over 100 years old.

Then a few days ago I did another post of my sister wanting to go see the “pile of trash” we had left over from the yard sale. My hubby pretty much destroyed the piano hoping to recycle the inside parts and make a little money from the strings…and such. He made a whopping $12.30! Anyway, my sister wanted a piece of the inside… you can see that blog post HERE.

Okay, so now we’re up to speed on the piano; why it got wet and how it was broken up. Well….unbeknownst to me, my hubby (bless his heart…) thought I might like to do something with the front panel of the piano… a shelf maybe or take off the decorative trim… He also saved a few of the legs and decorative trim pieces along the sides. I saw it in the garage and INSTANTLY knew what I wanted to do with it… MAKE A HEADBOARD OUT OF IT!… Okay who else would have guessed that? This is it… set on a couch with the side pieces beside it.

First of all, let me tell you I am NOT an expert, but LOVE to experiment and try to figure things out. I’m learning how to decorate and hope someday to be as good as my sisters!!!

My hubby added a piece of trim wood to the top to make a lip overhang…

Here’s a look at how it looked attached and the side pieces screwed on…

The front was all marked up with a pencil… so a Magic Eraser did the trick…

and then it was painted with Kilz…I’ve been working on this for days, but had to keep at it because I was doing it on my dining room table and there is only so much mess I can stand…

After it was primed, I used Wal Mart’s new Waverly chalk paint in white and gave it two coats…

CIMG0453

I distressed it with sandpaper…

…then used Miss Mustard Seed’s Antiquing Wax all over the headboard.

CIMG0454

My hubby added some braces to the backside to mount it to the bedframe.

CIMG0477

I used some gold Rub ‘n Buff on just the high parts of the design…It’s hard to see but it’s a nice added touch.

This is basically what it looks like…

Okay, now for some “glamour” shots… not really…

I still have lots I’d like to do… get some curtains made to hang along side the headboard and make some more pillows for my bed.

My room looks bright pink when I used a flash, but the color is actually called Brickdust and it’s more subtle than it looks.
The comforter is the down one my hubby found on the ground at the yard sale and thought it might come clean in the wash. It’s pretty nice, don’t you think?

So there you have it, my pretty cheap antique piano headboard. I love it!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Oh, how wonderful the piano/headboard turned out! I was looking at the way the piano looked before it was trashed, and thought how beautiful the front panel looked. Then found that George did exactly what I thought he should do with it! I’m surprised that piano didn’t get snatched up, but then who wants to move a piano?

Your room looks lovely and I like the idea of wider curtains over the bed. Did you also do that round table on the left side? It’s adorable! That is really a good sized comforter on the bed!

I was wondering if you got the recipe I sent yesterday. Got an duplicate email from you today from last week!!

    1. HI Linda,
Thanks so much for liking my new headboard! The piano was so old and SO heavy… my hubby guessed probably 500 pounds heavy!
When we bought our house there was no trim on any of the walls. They were all paneled and the paneling came right to the edge and then stopped. We have slowly been putting trim up in the rooms as we work on them. I’m ready to get the bedroom trim up now.

That little table was a gift from my hubby. We were in a little antique shop and I spied it, but didn’t get it. A few days later, on Valentine’s Day, I found it sitting in my sewing room with a single red rose in a vase on it. My sweet hubby had gone back and bought it for me.

I did get your recipe and plan to try them. Thanks… Are they similar to a bread and butter pickle? Do you know what they are?

      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. I have eaten bread and butter pickles from the store, never homemade. I guess they might be similar. I forgot to mention that you can also put tomatoes in the recipe. I tried that, and it was really good too.

  2. I LOVE it Jeanne! My family would love it too since they all have music backgrounds……especially my daughter since she loves to paint furniture. It has such beautiful detail on the front. Thanks for sharing it with us.

    1. Hi Marsha,
It was a fun project to do… and it’s got such a neat story behind it too. I’m so happy my hubby saved it for me to do something with.
      Glad you liked it.
      Have a wonderful 4th Marsha,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Jeanne, I think the piano headboard is really very pretty. The fresh paint and sanding you did to the scroll work adds lots of personality to this piece. What a great idea George had !!
Now that little round table set at the side of the bed is looking very interesting to me! Hhmmmm…….. so if you are ever thinking about ………. no, it is one of those pieces of furniture that will fit in so many places.
I love that you were able to recycle the various pieces of the water logged piano. It is good to make use of things instead of hauling them to the dump. I do hate waste.

    1. Good morning Jeannie,
I’m so happy everyone likes the piano. Since I started painting a few things, my hubby has really gotten into it! He’s got an open mind and sometimes I never know what he’ll bring home.
That little table was a Valentine’s gift from my sweet hubby too. I told the story in Linda’s post above… sorry… Jeannie, it’s here to stay…
Speaking of the dump, my hubby had to haul his pick up truck full of trash bags PLUS an 8′ pull behind trailer filled with bags and trash.
      Thanks Jeannie,
      Have a wonderful 4th of July holiday…
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thanks Christine,
I think it looks fabulous too! Glad we think alike.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. What a fabulous idea. It turned out really nice and looks great in your bedroom. The scroll on the headboard is really neat and looks great. Good work on both your parts.
It will be interesting to see what project you come up with next!
Have a great weekend…enjoy the 4th of July tomorrow. We are all blessed to live in this great country!

    1. Good afternoon Paula,
Thanks for your kind words about my new headboard. Most people would have probably just gone out and bought one, but I couldn’t find one that I liked… and now I know why… this one was waiting for me.
I have SO many projects waiting for me…it’s just a matter of picking one. I did find a french chair at that same place were George got my little table and I’d like to paint it and reupholster it. But I think curtains in my living room and my bedroom might beat it out.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend too… Enjoy those you celebrate with.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Well, aren’t you the clever one! Looks great as does the “new” comforter. Think you got the best part of the piano.

    1. Hi Joy,
Thank YOU! I’m glad everyone liked it… and the comforter is great too! The only thing is the down feathers have scooted around in it and some squares are really full and others are pretty empty. I don’t know how to shift them around so they are even.
      Have a wonderful weekend, Joy.
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thanks Jan,
      I thought so TOO!
Blessings to you and have a wonderful 4th of July weekend.
      ~ Jeanne
