Addy’s Aqua Dress and Gaiters up close…

Last Sunday, I did a post on the crinolines that were under my Civil War dresses. (HERE) They are one of those “hidden” treasures that don’t get seen very often but are a necessity for holding out those full skirts of the 1800’s. I received several comments and emails about this pretty aqua dress on Addy being a favorite. I thought maybe I would share a few more pictures of it up close so you could see more of the details.

The idea for the dress came from this paper doll replica of a dress from Godey’s Ladies Wear…

I searched in my fabric stash and found this piece and thought it would work well for the dress.

These are a few pictures of how I replicated the illustration.

Well, what do you think so far? Do you think I got it right with my interpretation?

When I got it all done and compared my finished dress with the one in the picture, I wanted it to have the same blue boots as in the picture, so I set out to see if I could make a pair of gaiters to go over a pair of shoes… This is what I came up with. They fastened around a pair of shoes and velcroed up the back. I was pretty happy with the way they turned out.

So there you have it. Another dress duplicated.

  1. Oh my gosh, Jeanne, how adorable! How is it I don’t remember you posting that dress? I absolutely LOVE it! Did you embroider the stitching above the ribbon on the skirt and at the neckline? And the little doll she is carrying—how did you happen to have one available? Your stash must be incredible!

    Love the little gaiters too!

Oh, not surprised that Rebecca’s boyfriend loved that cheesecake! So sweet of her to show you a picture of him enjoying it! And he is a dog lover too, I see!

    1. HI Linda,
Thank you for the nice compliments on Addy’s dress and gaiters. The stitching above the ribbon is a decorative stitch done on my sewing machine. I thought it looked pretty against the aqua fabric. Yes, the little doll was just one I had in my stash…and yes, my “stash” of stuff is incredible. I try destashing it every once in a while, but it’s like rabbits…it just grows and grows all the time.

Yes, the cheesecake was a big hit apparently. Rebecca told me the other night she would try to bring 2 small pieces home for me and her dad… I don’t think I’ll ever see those pieces though. The little doxie is Nala… a long haired one that is Bob’s parents.
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Oh, such a pretty dress. I love it !! The paper doll inspiration is a good lesson for me. Guess I don’t think deep enough to see that everywhere I look is an idea ready to be or influence a dress for my dolls. I need to pay more attention!
The pretty shade of blue is so bright and lively right down to the gaiters. Great idea!
I can see why you were so successful with your AG business.

    1. HI Jeannie,
Yes, paperdolls give you lots of inspiration and are fun just to look at even if you don’t sew. Thanks so much for your kind comments on Addy’s dress set. I appreciate it.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. You’ve achieved perfection interpreting and replicating the paper doll dress, Jeanne. Addy’s set is beautiful and all of the details are amazing!!
Because money was limited and a book of paper dolls was inexpensive they were one of my favorite toys growing up. I remember using tiny cuticle scissors to carefully cut them out. Yes, happy memories…
Did you get to taste Rebecca’s cheesecake or did her boyfriend get a second and third,…etc.? It would be hard to share. If that were my little dog on my legs he would be staring at me with those squinting begging eyes to let me know how hungry he is. Is that your puppy or Rebecca’s boyfriend’s puppy?

    1. Hi Cindy,
I LOVED paper dolls too when I was younger. I still look at them on Ebay every so often. I’m afraid I’ll never see a taste of that cheesecake…Rebecca said she’d try to bring 2 pieces home, but I’m not holding my breath.
The little doggie is Bob’s parent’s dog. Her name is Nala… apparently she knew she wasn’t getting a piece of cake or maybe she’d already had hers… I don’t know…
      Thank you Cindy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. I love this interpretation. Which machine are you using for the embroidery? All the touches are so feminine and in scale with the doll. The necklace works well with the dress neckline and her skin tone. Beautifully done. Kathleen I.

    1. Thank you Kathleen,
The stitching around the hem of the dress, just above the striped ribbon was done on my Baby Lock Esante ESe2. The stitching around the neck is a chain stitch done by hand. Thank you so much for your sweet compliments on Addy’s dress.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Oh, so glad you showed this dress again. Love it! Nice to see the gaiters as well. It looks like her boyfriend really loved the cheesecake. It looks so yummy. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much for your comments on Addy’s dress. I’m glad you liked it and the gaiters. Yes, apparently the cheesecake was a big hit…not that I’ll ever know… but her dad’s birthday is next week, so maybe Rebecca can make her dad his very own! There’s nothing he’d like any better than that.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Addy’s dress looks just like the paper doll dress and the little doll does too..amazing!
I can see that Rebecca’s boyfriend liked his cheesecake and I’m not surprised. If I’m not mistaken he has a little doxie on his lap. I have three and they are always in my lap or sitting next to me..watching me eat. Lol

    1. Hi Regina,
I’m glad you liked Addy’s dress and thanks for thinking it looked like the paper doll one.

Yes, the little dog is a long haired one and is named Nala. Maybe she’s already had her piece or maybe she’s sulking because she “didn’t” get a piece…who knows…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Beautiful dress, Jeanne, and what a clever way to simulate the look of the books! Perfect! I’d never have thought of that and I don’t remember seeing it anywhere else.
I tried once sewing for American Girl dolls and it bothered me that their fabric bodies showed at the neck of the dresses. Now I’ve been looking at your outfits on ebay and reading your blog since the first day and I don’t even see that bit of cloth.

    1. Thank you Jevne,
I appreciate your kind words about Addy’s dress. I’m glad it was “new” to several of you who made comments.
I always try to “hide” the neck seam with a necklace or a collar or something because I don’t like to see the cloth area either. I make very few sun dresses or low cut things… unless they have a necklace.
      Thanks again,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. HI Kathie,
Thanks for noticing the rick rack…only another seamstress might notice that…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Hi Jeanne,
Beautiful beautiful dress and detail from her necklace, the flowers at her waist, the decorative trim and her gators, not to mention her doll and basket.

Rebecca’s boyfriend must sure appreciate the fact that she can bake well. That’s a luscious looking cheesecake and design on the top with the strawberries. I am sure it made Rebecca happy to make it for him.

    Have a nice day, Jeanne!

    1. HI Paula,
Thanks for your sweet compliments on Addy’s dress set. It was fun to try and copy it as best I could.
I think Rebecca’s boyfriend does appreciate her cooking and baking for him. She asked him what he’d like for his birthday and he told her a strawberry covered cheesecake. I think this is the 3rd one she’s made for him. The last one she made him was just incredible too.
      Thanks again,
      Blessings, Jeanne
