A “sunshiny” day and some “sunshiny” doll dresses…

Yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day here…I think the sun was shining the entire day! There was a nice gentle breeze and the humidity was a little lower than it has been for the last few days. My hubby was working in the garden…

The moles has been having a grande ole time in our garden, burrowing tunnels and uprooting our tomato plants… AARRRGG!! Then the cowbirds decided they liked to pick off the leaves of our cucumber plants. They didn’t eat them, they just clipped them off and left them on the ground. We added some netting and tied some orange ties around the outside. So our little garden looks like some minimum security prison with all the netting and extra stakes and ribbons. It’s not quite as pretty as it was when it was all open and you could see everything. The birds have stopped coming but the moles have still been burrowing. My hubby decided he was just going to put the straw down and give up. (We did buy a mole trap and hopefully we’ll catch the little rascal!) The straw keeps the weeds down and the moisture in.

Anyway, the day was so pretty and bright and sunshiny, that I decided “bright yellow” dresses were in order. Yellow isn’t a color I sew with very often, but I found these few dresses and they are most definitely yellow. I hope you enjoy them.

This is Riley, by Helen Kish in her bright yellow dress. I called this “Scottish Sunshine.”

Wren, by Helen Kish, looks awfully sweet in her ruffled mini dress.

Here’s Addy, by American Girl, in my favorite “Addy dress!”

Last up is Hope, by Kaye Wiggs. Her skin is sunkissed, so she looked better in a more goldish yellow…

I hope your day was filled with sunshine!

See you tomorrow,

  1. Thank you, Jeanne. Your sunshiny yellow dresses along with the sun shining this morning (after 3 dreary days, so thank goodness!) are starting my day off just right. I don’t sew with yellow much either. After seeing your dresses I am wondering why. Your sweet girls all dressed in yellow sure lift the spirits. I love seeing your Hope; wish Kaye would make her again.
Sorry about your mole and bird problems. One year I had the most beautiful hanging basket on our porch. It was already planted by the nursery, so it was all filled out, and expensive. Well, the mourning doves thought it would be a great place to build a nest. They got in there before I noticed and layed their eggs. They didn’t ruin EVERYTHING, but flattened out the center flowers. Silly birds…they would stay in there while I watered around them.
I hope today is as beautiful for you as yesterday was.

    1. HI Cindy,
Yes, the sun is shining again today and it looks like another beautiful day! I guess yellow is one of those “overlooked” colors, but when used it’s nice to see. Isn’t Hope pretty… I don’t sew much for my Wiggs girls, but I need to . I’m debating about selling my Ellowyne dolls and then I’ll have fewer dolls on my list and maybe Nyssa and Hope will come up more often… just a thought. Do you or did you ever sew for Ellowyne? She is so wonderful to pose, but I’m just not a “fashionista” kind of seamstress.
We used to have birds do the same thing in our hanging baskets, but I’ve never had a bird as big as a dove get in one…
…and it’s okay that you said “mourning” doves… because that is their real name… you got it right the first time! They are the brownish grey bird with speckled spots on their wing tips. Sometimes in the early evening, when they coo, they do sound like they are mourning… Sometimes they are called Turtle doves too.
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. Jeanne, oh, you are right. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Turtle doves is a cute name for them too. They are very mellow birds, aren’t they?
No, I have never sewn for Ellowyne. I’m not much of a fashionista either. I love cute little girl things, things no teenager would ever wear.

  2. We have sunshine and a light breeze today, it feels so nice after having 90 degree temps this past week. I am not really a fan of yellow, but I would choose Hope’s dress as my favorite. She is just so lovely.

    1. HI Regina,
Wow…you’ve had really hot weather already! I bet the breeze is very welcomed!
Thanks for liking Hope’s dress. This was my debut dress for her when I first received her.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. We are having very good luck using the sonic mole sensors.. they beep about every 30 seconds… and the moles hate it… so they seem to have left our yard..

Isn’t it funny how we are that we don’t want to sew certain colors.. I am that way with browns and greens.

    1. HI Kath,
We looked at the sonic mole sensors, but my hubby decided on the trap. He wanted me to ask you where you live? It might make a difference in the soil, but he was interested…and might give the sonic sensors a try.
I guess everyone has their favorites and their “non” favorites!
      Thanks so much Kath,
      Blessings, Jeanne

A bunch of doll club friends once unanimously voted that our FAVORITE color on dolls is YELLOW, even though NONE of us liked yellow on ourselves! (And, a few of us, myself included, weren’t particularly fond of the color yellow at all, but LOVED yellow on dolls! Strange quirk??!) So, I was DOLL-lighted today to see your bright, sunshiny doll outfits posted today! (My favorite is your GORGEOUS creation for “Addy”; however, my “Riley” would LUST after your yellow dress with a SCOTTIE DOG applique!)

BTW ~ We have moles, too, but COWBIRDS?? I have never heard of them. I wonder if we have them in northern NJ???

    BEST dolly regards! ~

    Cheryl in (cooled-off) NJ

    1. HI Cheryl,
I think yellow is one of those colors you either love or you hate! Not much in between-ers on it! Addy’s dress was my all time favorite dress for her. I loved it when I made it and love it still when I see those pictures of her in it.
Yes, cowbirds are just small birds that travel through your yard, kind of hopping along on the ground. They did some serious damage to our cukes!
      Thanks Cheryl,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Oh, Jeanne, my favorite is Riley, love the little Scottie on her skirt, but all the dresses are so bright and sunny.
Sorry about your mole problem. I remember my great-grandmother out in the yard with the garden hose and a pitchfork, filling the tunnels with water and stabbing the mole with the pitchfork when it came out for air. She was a very patient person and loved her grass.
We have cowbirds but usually just when they’re migrating, they don’t hang around. The most frequent guest at our black oil sunflower feeder is a red-winged blackbird. Chases the cardinals or goldfinches and house finches away. We have Baltimore orioles at our hummingbird feeder (I leave out a bee guard just for them) but no hummingbirds yet that I’ve seen.

    1. HI Jevne,
I need to make a pretty yellow dress for Ten Ping with a Scottie dog applique on it. She might like that. Not sure how her coloring would look with yellow though.
Yep, the pitchfork method is my hubby’s preferred method…learned it on the farm he grew up on. But it does take patience!
I haven’t seen any hummingbirds yet, but they’ll be here soon! We have all the other birds you mentioned too. I like seeing the birds out at the feeder.
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. My husbands says cowbirds take over the nests of other birds, destroy the eggs and have a new home. A bird lover,he thinks they are awful.
When I started collecting and sewing a few Mary Hoyer doll clothes, a dealer told me never to make anything in yellow as collectors don’t want that color. Wren is lovely. I’m trying to decide which Kish of that size I like best and Wren it is. Your yellow dresses are lovely.

        1. HI Jan,
My hubby thinks they are awful now too! They must have been migrating through, because we don’t see them nearly as much as when we first put the garden in.
We set a mole trap and it is “sprung” but I’m too chicken to pull it up out of the ground. I’ll leave that “honor” to my hubby!!!
Wren was and still is my favorite Kish doll. I still remember the day I opened her box. I was in heaven!
          Blessings to you Jan,
          ~ Jeanne
