A Slip for Ellowyne…

I didn’t get much sewing done today as it was Food Pantry day and I had to help my mom with something again. I do have something to show you though… It’s a pretty slip to go under Ellowyne’s dress. I made the waist from some stretch lace and left off the waistband so it snugs her waist without any bulk. I dropped the blue lace down past her hips so there were no “hippy” problems.

It makes for a smooth fitting princess line dress…I think you’ll agree…

I looked through my wool felt and found these 3 pieces that might work for something… maybe a purse or a hat…not sure yet…they are a very good match in person…

I sewed on a few more sets of snaps and thought what else could I show you? How about the insides of the dress? Not too terribly interesting, but it’ll have to do… you can see how it’s constructed.

Well, sorry, but that’s it for today…hopefully more tomorrow. :o)

See you tomorrow,

  1. I do like this style on Ellowyne — I liked the coral version too. Someone may decide to buy this for the underclothes alone. I’m wondering about the rose felt for a hat — I think it would be pretty with her hair, though from your pictures we know that Ellowyne is beautiful in blue. I love those tiny buttons marching precisely down the front of her dress. How close are they in color to the rose felt?

We may have our first freeze tonight. Then the leaves will start to come down. It’s been beautiful, but it is fall. The first freeze is only the first — I have to remember that first doesn’t mean constant. I hope your east coast readers are spared the worst of Hurricane Matthew.

    1. HI Marilyn,
I’ve been a busy little bee working on Ellowyne’s dress set. I’m just shy of getting it finished and being able to put it on Ebay tonight, but I’m hoping to get it listed tomorrow evening.
I won’t tell you the color of felt I picked so it will be a surprise, but it looks pretty now that it’s made up… I like it the best…
Your first freeze??? Oh, tell me it isn’t so! I’m not ready for freezes just yet!
I’m with you, praying that everyone in the path of hurricane Matthew is safe. I don’t know if I have any readers along the path or not…
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Beautiful underpinnings, Jeanne! She doesn’t even need a dress! And I love the dress too, like I mentioned yesterday, it reminds me of my mother’s hostess gown. I love the blues and greens with a splash of pink in the dress material, and you have sewn this outfit very well—so well, in fact, that you could wear it inside out, compared to what I sew! Those seams are just perfect!!

I have never cared for adult dolls for some reason, maybe because they are dressed so over the top formally, have exaggerated make-up in the case of Barbie, and well, just not my thing. But this doll is beautiful and I love the outfit she has on, something you would actually see someone wear in your everyday life. I don’t need another doll!!!!!

While at Hobby Lobby yesterday I happened to see a retro pattern book in the material section from Simplicity, I think, and looked through it. What fun to see patterns from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s in it! It is not a thick catalog, but I was surprised to see Ellowyne’s dress in it, or one almost like it.

Yes, Marilyn, my son who lives in Denver says it’s getting cold there! We have yet to see a first frost, yikes, today it will go up to 87 and then drop to 67 for the high! Up and down! I hope this hurricane doesn’t do too much damage, and I’m glad the west coast earthquake didn’t happen. We need some calm!

    1. HI Linda,
I don’t have any 1950’s catalogs but some from the 40’s and I looked in them to see if I could find a hostess dress, but didn’t see anything. Thanks for your kind compliments on the insides of Ellowyne’s dress.
I have to admit, Ellowyne intimidates me just a little bit… her claim to fame is being a 19 year old fashionista… that’s the part that intimidates me.. what do I know about fashionistas? Not much…that’s why I do little girls dresses!
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Beautifully finished inside of the dress, Jeanne as well as the underneath wear. Some Ellowyne is going to look very elegant. I’ll look forward to seeing what you end up doing with the felt.

You had a very busy day yesterday and yet finished all that you did sewing-wise. You are one who keeps quite busy.

    Blessings.

    1. HI Becky,
I just finished Ellowyne’s set…YAY… but need to get pictures.. I think it will go on Ebay tomorrow evening. I hope you like what I ended up doing…

I won’t disagree with you.. I do stay busy…sometimes too busy to suit me…but I try to make time for sewing each day… just a little bit…
      Blessings to you Becky,
      ~ Jeanne

  4. Ellowyne looks beautiful in her dress. I like how you have the incidental pink ribbon in her hair. She is a very pretty doll. What is her height, please? She looks so “willowy and graceful.” And in this dress, with it’s pretty colors and the tiny buttons, this style fits her wonderfully.
I do like the articulated dolls. I have a few Tonner dolls and they are adult age. Ava Gardner, Daphne, Pure, Press and a pretty redhead. I don’t have many clothes for them because the clothes, while absolutely divine, are so expensive. I think these dolls are 15″ or 16″.
*To Anne Johnson – may I ask which Tonner dolls you have? Thank you.

    1. Hi Paula,
The Ellowyne dolls are 16″ tall and yes, they are very graceful and pretty. Some ladies have over a hundred dolls…I can see why. They are very addicting to collect. They aren’t terribly expensive to buy…I have 3 but got 2 very reasonably priced.
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. What about a 50’s organdy and felt apron? With a little ribbon waist and tie. Used to be very popular. I have an apron collection of 50’s aprons with several like that. The little slip is so cute.
In my monitor both the pink and blue felt seem the best match for whatever you decide.

    1. Hi Joy,
Your idea of an apron sounded like a sweet idea but I decided I wanted her outfit to be more on the romantic side…
I thought I was done but Rebecca thought it needed something else. ..so I’m working on that now…
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. What lovely, lacy underthings, Jeanne! Ellowyne will be beautiful from the inside out, and speaking of the inside, your construction is impeccable with such beautifully finished seams! The princess lines contribute to Ellowyne’s “willowy and graceful” shape, too. Put me down as a fan of the pink-y felt, Jeanne. It really pulls out the pink flowers of the dress and makes the little buttons pop! As always, I’m looking forward to the finishing details on Ellowyne’s ensemble.

As a little girl, I wasn’t allowed to play with Barbies, which probably explains part of my fondness for the little girl dolls. It’s a nostalgic embrace of my and my daughter’s childhoods, but Ellowyne is such a pretty “adult” doll that I would be tempted to buy her if I had the space. Now that I have downsized and have many of my dolls in storage, I don’t suppose it would make much sense to start collecting many more again. I have to be satisfied with my Tonner “little girls” now, including Patsy, Sophie, Gracie, and Ann Estelle. I always wanted Georgia, too, but never did get her. I also have several Tonner dolls from the Disney Princess Archive, but I don’t dress them and no longer display them as I still do my little girls. That’s it for my Tonner’s, Paula. Time, space and cost keep me from buying more. I did, however, recently pre-order a Little Darling, as I couldn’t hold out any longer! So many of the beautiful clothes sold online are made for the Little Darlings, and they are irresistibly charming. I am looking forward with eager anticipation to my Little Darling’s arrival, but I’m hoping I don’t become so obsessed with her that her things eat up all my available space. I’m pretty sure it will be love at first sight! What is it about dolls that soothe the soul?

    1. Hi Anne,
I have to agree with you that Ellowyne certainly is a graceful doll. I’m glad I decided to sew something for her this time. I really need to draft a few patterns for her so she’ll come up to sew for more often… I do enjoy seeing her in pretty dresses!
You will be so thrilled to have your Little Darling in your collection. I can’t wait till you receive her!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Now that I see her again I remember this doll. I assumed you had sold her since she hasn’t been seen in a while. I knew Ten Ping had been up very often, maybe because she was new to you. That’s why I suggested Kit a few dress back because I didn’t think she had been seen except once this year
Ellowyne’s dress is very pretty, such a soft blue flower print. The flared skirt makes her look quite elegant. I didn’t play with Barbies either. I had a Skipper, the Sunshine family which I loved , but was unfortunately somehow lost, baby dolls and a couple of Madame Alexander little girl dolls. Ellowyne’s slip is really fancy as well. All those tiny buttons are amazing. Are they the size you use for baby clothes or smaller, they look smaller. The felt is quite nice perhaps for a wide brimmed hat.
I received my #33. It’s funny, some dolls look better in person than in the catalog and also in other clothes than the collection AG gave them. I really think Marie-Grace and Caroline are two examples. #33 looks so pretty in pictures, but in person she didn’t do much for me. Her eyes and wig are lovely, but her skin matches her hair too much. I’m going to use her wig to give my Nellie two wig options as I think it will be a pretty custom. I already knew if I didn’t care for her I could recoup the majority on the base doll

    1. Hi Laura,
Poor Ellowyne has been biding her time in the back row on the dolly shelf…poor, poor Ellowyne!
The buttons down the front of Ellowyne’s dress are 4mm or about 1/8th of an inch wide.
Your reaction to your new #33 was exactly like mine…I didn’t like the eighth with her skin tone either. I sent mine back. I hope you can change out her wig and turn her into something you really like.
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. I should add that I especially like the high waist seam. It’s nearly invisible, but once I paid enough attention, I noticed and it makes a huge, if subtle difference. I also like the sleeve length. I looked for something to dislike, but I couldn’t find it. I’m looking forward to seeing where you put the hem.
I remember those organdy aprons Joy mentioned. I too am sure I have one somewhere — a hostess apron. It might make a very cute accessory.
I’ve been picturing a neat, small hat like the one my mother wore for her wedding. Some years later, she removed the little face veil and wore it backward — it looked charming and up-to-date for the times. But Laura’s wide brimmed hat might very well be better — I can visualize with this dress and I think it would look very classic.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
Rebecca thinks I should do something to show off the empire waist, so I’m thinking….
I put a half inch hem in the dress. I hope you’ll like what I end up with and I hope it stays classic looking too. That was what I wanted…
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Charlotte Trayer

I enjoyed seeing the interior construction of Ellowynne’s dress, Jeanne. Very nicely done! I’m primarily a seamstress/dressmaker (just for myself, family, and dolls), and I’m a very particular sewer, so I’m always interested in how the inside looks.

As for the accessory, I think I’d either go blue or the rose pink; the green just doesn’t “sing” with the fabric the way the others do!
