Happy April Fool’s Day! I have a story that I think will put a smile on your face first thing this morning…
Back in the days of the Mattel Cabbage Patch Kid craze it was usually very hard to get one for the kiddies. A radio station (I don’t know where) announced that Mattel was going to get Cabbage Patch Kids out to the people of this particular city. The plan was that they had to go to the football field of the local university and wait. An airplane would fly overhead and the dolls would be dropped onto the field.
People were supposed to hold their credit cards up so that a photographer with a telephoto lens in the airplane could get the credit card numbers and charge the price of the dolls to the recipients’ accounts. People actually showed up, waving American Express cards in the breeze.
April Fool’s on those poor silly people…
First of all, I’m sorry I didn’t get your comments answered yesterday… my time was not my own again and it is now 12:07 and I’m just now getting to my post. It was just one of those days… BUT, I did read all your comments and your emails and I appreciate your thoughts and how you all think things through…
Just to let you know…the violets fabric won out and I have gotten started on Willa’s dress. I’m not taking a long time on this one because I want to get one more special dress made before Easter…but more on that later… :o)
I managed to get the bodice and the sleeves completed on Willa’s dress… and she does look very pretty in this fabric.
Now, it’s imagination time again… Here is the cluny lace I plan to use and the flowers are just laying on her waist… the skirt has been cut out but not gathered up yet…
Won’t Willa be sweet looking in this?
I’m really liking the height on my new ironing board… boy, 2-3″ makes a huge difference… and the iron is nice too. I’m giving it a work out…
Well, that’s all for today…sorry for the short post… I have a birthday picnic I was getting ready for and didn’t have time for any other news…

The dress is going to be perfect. Willa looks like she belongs on Susette’s porch, minding the fairy gardens. I’m still looking forward to a dress with a mouse-pattern pinafore for play and a hat and pretty sash for dress-up, but we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, I’m very happy with the dress we are getting.
And who knows, you may not be able to resist a Sunday post. Last Sunday we got a very good one.

It’s prettier than what it looks. I took these pictures with my phone since I was just going to take a few…and when I go to crop them, I can see that my camera changes the color on me, right in front of me. I don’t know what that’s all about….
I looked up completed KP Kids mouse fabrics and there was a blue mouse too! I thought I’d be the only person on the planet to still have some of this fabric, but nope…a few others did too! I also saw one I had with little chicks in bonnets on there.
I’m hoping to at least get Willa’s skirt attached and if I do I will share it tomorrow…

Willa’s bodice is beautiful. She looks so pretty already.
I remember the Cabbage Patch days. I had two little girls who wanted CPs. I never went and stood in a football field though.

Willa does look pretty in this fabric. I’m sure she’ll look prettier as I keep working on it.
I was sewing like a mad woman during that heyday of the Cabbage Patch Kids and I “probably” would have been one of the gullible ones out there on the football field waving my credit card. I had made one of the “look alike” dolls for my model… but to have won a “real CPK” would have been wonderful… :o)

So glad the ironing board is working out for you. Since I don’t iron much, I would not have thought about the height. Next time I unearth mine from the things piled on it, I’ll have to check the height.

I wouldn’t have thought 2-3 inches would make that big of a difference either, but it really has. I just love the new height…
Isn’t that just the funniest thing to think of all those “probably” ladies standing out there waving their credit cards… I could easily have been one of them…that’s scary…

Oh how pretty Willa looks surrounded by those beautiful purple and white flowers! She could be called “Little Miss Spring”! The lace trim and flowers give it such a “springy” feel! Maybe a little lilac and white flowered wreath would be just the thing for her pretty red, curly hair!
Oh gosh, talk about being tired!! Our son and family left yesterday, but I think they took my energy with them! We had a very nice time with them, but I feel exactly how old I am—maybe older! The egg casserole recipe is coming later today.
I could never figure out the attraction for the Cabbage Patch Dolls. They seemed pretty ugly to me, but everybody has their own likes and dislikes. My daughter never wanted one, but I think she was too old or something for them when they were popular.
And now—-we have to take everything down in the kitchen and move it all out, since we are having our wood floor redone, you know, sanded and stained. No going in the kitchen for 3 days! Not going to be fun!

Company can wear you out, can’t it? It’s fun while they are here, but you don’t realize how tired you can get from sometimes doing “nothing.” I hope the rain held off enough that you got to go do a few things outside…
I wasn’t particularly crazy about the CP dolls either, but they sure helped me make some money by sewing clothes for them… I hit it right at the peak of craziness I think.
How fun this is going to be… I sure wish I could talk my hubby into hardwood floors… I think they are the best look around… but our floors are too uneven, or so I’m told… Maybe some day… I hope your’e stocked up on microwave foods and 3 days will pass by pretty quickly…

I have to comment on your April Fool’s story:
Mattel didn’t make those early Cabbage Patch Kids that caused such a furor–it was Coleco, and the year was 1983. They made them for the first several years, and then Hasbro made them. I don’t think Mattel got the licensing until about 20 years ago or so. Of course, those are all the TOY Cabbage Patch Kids. The ORIGINAL ones, which are all fabric with needle-sculpted and hand painted facial features, and they first came out in 1978. Both the Originals and the toys are still being made today!!
I have been to Babyland (the older one–there’s a new one now, much nicer, I understand, and would love to go there some day, too), and adopted a baby I saw being born from the Mother Cabbage. I put in my “order”–hair and eye color, but it didn’t matter if it was a boy or a girl (turned out to be a girl), and when she was born, the nurse turned to me (there were about 30 or so visitors also watching!), and asked what I was going to name her! I was so excited about just being there, I hadn’t even Thought about a name!! LOL Fortunately my girlfriend Liz (who I was visiting in Atlanta at the time) remembered a conversation we’d had the day before and said, “You said you like the name Katherine Elizabeth, why don’t you name her that?” and I said, “Okay!!” so that’s what I did!!
By the way, I am a member of the Cabbage Patch Kids Collectors Club, and have about 20+ of the Originals, and quite a few of the toys, too, plus lots of ephemera and licensed products.
