A new little flower girl dress made…

Remember a while back when I showed you 2 little girls dresses that I made as a prototype for my niece’s upcoming wedding? I made each little girl a dress so I could tweak the pattern if I needed to before I cut into the fabric being used in the wedding. They are in Pennsylvania and I’m in Illinois, so this was “long distance sewing…” The dresses could be used as their Easter dresses if I got it right! This was the first little girls dress…

It fit the little girl pretty well, but they decided it was a little long, so it was hemmed a little shorter.

The second little girl was apparently more tiny than I thought and I think she was “swimming” in her first dress, so I told them to just keep that dress and save it for next year and I’d make another one. Here’s the one that was too big…

She’s 3 years old but only wears about a size 1. She’s very petite just like her mom…

So last night I got busy on a second dress…after all Easter is approaching very quickly and I wanted to get it to her before next Sunday. I found this cute pink floral print with some whimsical bumblebees in my stash…

Here’s the plan…fortunately, I already had these few “embellishments” and thought they would work just fine. I decided to make the belt a separate piece so it could be cinched up a bit on her if need be.

Here’s the bodice done…

It’s really a fun little dress and I hope Nora loves it…but mostly I hope it fits. If it does, I’ll get started on the dresses for the wedding next week. She’s smaller than the mannequin I have so it doesn’t hang quite right on it, but you can get an idea of how it looks. It’s better than showing it flat on a hanger.

I had to leave it open in the back, because of her size…

  1. Goodness, Jeanne, what a tiny little girl she must be! I remember my children always wearing the next biggest size whatever their age was, in other words, if they were 3, then they would wear size 4, and so forth. That is a darling, cheery print, and I’m sure she will love it. When is the wedding anyway?

    1. Hi Linda,
Yes, she’s little bitty. I think her mom is a size 0 or maybe a 1!
The wedding is the end of May… so I need to get them done and crossed off my list!
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Very cute, Jeanne. Lucky little girl to have another dress “made by Jeanne”. I am sure she’ll be thrilled with the cute embellishments too. They’re like little toys on her dress.
I have a question. How do you attach the sash to the bodice? Just curious. (I may have granddaughters some day…) I would’ve made a separate sash, but your way looks like it’s part of the dress. ???
    Happy Sunday to you, Jeanne!

    1. Hi Cindy,
Thanks so much Cindy! The embellishments look like little pieces of candy to me…
Normally I would make a little thread loop for the belt to slide through, but I’m going to let my sister position it on Nora and she can attach it. I wasn’t sure where to put it so I left it for someone else to do.
      Happy Sunday to you too,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Thanks so much for the comment about the dress being too big. I made a six 6 for my granddaughter and she was swimming in it. She wears size 6-7 in off-the-rack dresses, so I think the patterns run very large. I’ll keep it for when she is about eight years old. Your blog is so helpful in many ways. You’ve made darling dresses for lucky little girls.

    1. HI Susette,
Yes, I’ve sent little girls dresses all over the world just by using a chest measurement and a measurement from the shoulder to the place where they want the hem to be, but I missed on this one. I just couldn’t imagine she was “that” small, so I made a little bigger than what I should have. No problem…now she’s set for 2 Easters…hopefully.
I know patterns do run larger, so I should have paid more attention.
Thanks so much for your compliments.
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thanks Christine,
It will look sweet on a little blond headed girl, won’t it?
      Thank you so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. I love the fabric and a separate belt is a good idea. I remember the other fabric from before, I love the roses on blue.

    1. Thanks Jevne,
I thought with a separate belt it might work better with the fit.
      Thanks so much!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. That second dress is cute too! She’ll love it! I hope they send you pictures of the little girls wearing their Easter dresses…dying to see them!
    Have a good week!

    1. Hi Kathie,
I hope my sister will snap some pictures of the girls in their dresses too. Then I’ll be sure and show you all.
      Have a wonderful Sunday, Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. I think it’s adorable, and it looks like a dress a three-year old will love. But, I like dress number one as well.

    1. Thanks Carolyn. The dress arrived in PA today so now I wait to see how this one fits. Blessings, Jeanne
