A huge return on a .99 cent fat quarter…

First things first…

Today is my 33rd Wedding Anniversary (YAY!) and I thought I’d share the flowers from my birthday party last week. They go perfectly with today’s post. Who knows if I’ll get “new” flowers….

Now to today’s post…

Several years ago I stopped by a small variety store and found one particular fat quarter ( a piece of fabric 18″ x 22″) that caught my eye. It was an Asian looking piece; very bright and colorful in pinks and purples. It’s hard to make something from just ONE fat quarter so I searched for a second one…to no avail. I decided I could do something with it and made the huge .99 cent purchase.

When I got home and looked at my dolls, I decided Song, by Helen Kish, would be the recipient of an outfit made from the fat quarter. I drafted a pattern for a long tunic and added a coordinating pair of pants to go with it. The headpiece was very pretty and added some extra charm to the whole Oriental look I was hoping for.

I listed it on Ebay and it was a hit, selling for $67.00! I was pleased that I had turned my .99 cents into a fairly nice profit! I mailed it off with a smile and was quite happy! Here are a few pics of Song modeling the outfit. Isn’t she pretty?

But if that wasn’t enough…

I had tiny little An Mei, also by Helen Kish, and she was just the right size to use up the small scraps I had left over from Song’s set.
This is what I made for An Mei:

I listed this tiny little set and waited to see if it might sell… Well, my socks just about flew off when the winning bid came in at $102.00! I was flabbergasted that the little .99 cent fat quarter brought in $169.00! This has to be my best return ever on a fat quarter!!

What’s your best “return on a fat quarter” story?

  1. Jeanne, I really remember those outfits, thinking that was the prettiest Asian fabric I have seen. I love the flower headdresses! So glad you had such success from them.

    1. Thanks Sissy,
After I made those 2 outfits, I went on a search for almost a year, and found some in California… 3 yards for $21.00. I bought it and have only made one thing since… go figure!
      Thanks, Jeanne

  2. Jeanne, I am blown away at the beauty of these creations. They are classically beautiful.
I have found a few fat quarters I’d like but I was not sure I could possibly work an outfit out of them. You are giving me encouragement to give it a try. Thank you!!

    1. Thank You Jeannie,
The fabric is what makes them so eye catching I think. You just have to make certain when you cut something out that it is exactly the way you want it, or you’ll be short on fabric. I lay it all out and double check several times before cutting.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Love is the word I use to describe how I feel about Asian dolls. No fat quarter story. In fact it was about a year ago, I finally asked what a fat quarter meant. The dolls and outfits are wonderful!

  4. Thank you Jan,
I’m kind of partial to the Asian dolls myself. Lian is very special to me and a top favorite that I use to model my things. Thank you for your compliments.

  5. Hi Jeanne, Have to let you know how much I am enjoying your blog site. I have learned so much since I ‘ve popped in to look and read. I love your Asian inspired clothes for Song and little An Mei. That print is amazing and h=the head piece is truly a work of art and so wonderful pieced with the fabric. Hope you continue posting blogs…Lynne

    1. Hi Lynne,
How very nice of you to compliment me on the Asian outfits. It was one of the prettiest fabrics I had seen and I actually searched until I found more of it… out in California. So now I have 3 yards of it!
I do plan on continuing to post on my blog. I hope I don’t run out of things to say. Surely I won’t!
      Thanks Lynne,
      blessings, Jeanne

  6. YOU. Are amazing!!!!
Wow! Now truth be told, you DID add some additional fabric, buttons, and silk flowers, but you definitely have a magic touch.
