A dress for the Little Darlings is in the works….

Since I started writing this blog, my sewing time has been majorly interrupted. I can’t seem to figure out how to do both, and I don’t want to give up either one! So last night I decided I was just going to make today a sewing day and get something made!!

Well, my day didn’t go exactly as I had planned. By this evening I was hoping to be writing this post telling you about how I created a new pattern and ultimately a new dress for Dianna Effner’s 13″ Little Darlings, and show you the finished set! D-I-D-N-‘-T happen! I picked out my fabrics last night and then decided I would like to make a new wool felt jacket pattern, unlike the ones in yesterdays post (here) that didn’t have set in sleeves. I wanted to get the jacket done first and then decide how to make the dress.

W-E-L-L….. I think I cut out 5 trial patterns from paper, one from paper towels, and 2 from the wool felt I was planning to use. I think I made 3 sets of sleeves and set them in and took them out 4 times. I reworked one of the fronts so many times I had to throw it away. I made the sleeves longer, then a little shorter, then the bodice angled, then rounded, then cropped off… it was crazy to say the least. It wasn’t so much “designer’s block” but more of “getting it J-U-S-T right” before moving on!

Anyway, don’t give up on me… I am getting somewhere. You can see evidences of my work today on my sewing table…(I’ll spare you pictures of the scraps in the trash can!) My plan is to keep working this evening and see what I end up with tomorrow.

Below are some pictures of my work in progress and a slight sneak preview of what’s to come… very soon I hope!

  1. You have stamina, Jeanne, and I understand your having to “get it just right”. Although I think I would of had to have stopped and taken a break somewhere in there, worked on some knitting or “slept on it”.
Those last pics look great! I’m sure this will be a beautiful outfit when you’re finished.

    1. Hi Cindy,
Stamina? Maybe, but it was more just grit and determination to get SOMETHING… ANYTHING finished. I did take a break… a doll friend sent me a belated birthday present… a PECAN LOG… and Cindy,
I ate the whole thing. UGH!
Now that I’ve gotten a little further, I’m hoping to get it finished today! Hope so!

  2. Looking good! So glad you didn’t give up. I probably would have, depending on what I was doing. LOL! Sewing is something I struggle with, so I applaud you and am very impressed with your work. I look forward to seeing the finished product! :o)

    1. Thank you Carolyn,
I’m glad I sometimes struggle…that way everyone knows sewing is sometimes hard even for those of us who do it on a regular basis. Maybe it will be an encouragement to all. I’m glad I didn’t give up either because it’s turning out pretty cute on Lian. Hope to get it finished today!

  3. So that’s how a real “pro” does it! I love the way you lay things out so nicely, it is an art work in itself! I must ask, though, how do you manage to get your housework, laundry, etc., done? Do you have a cleaning lady come in? By the time I get that stuff done, the day is about over, or I don’t have the energy to sew! I will admit, that I sew on my kitchen table and therefore, have to clean up afterwards, so things can’t stay out long. Unfortunately, my so called sewing room has been taken over by my AG dolls!

  4. HI Linda,
A pro? Are you kidding me Linda? No, I don’t have a cleaning lady come in!! I wish!!!!
I guess I just get to everything as I can. I DO wish sometimes I had more hours in my day, but I don’t so I just have to use the ones I have when I get them. I usually sew late at night when everything else has been taken care of. I’m trying to figure it out better since starting this blog. I was talking to my mom about it this evening and she said, “well, you may just have to quit blogging…” I don’t want to do that, so I’ll have to figure out something else.
I need to go do dishes now, so I guess I’ll go. Thanks for being a faithful reader. I should have told my mom, “I can’t quit blogging, Linda has her coffee with me in the mornings!”
    Blessings, Jeanne
