A doll wig, restyled for my Little Darling, Janie…

Saturday morning I gave my hubby a haircut and while I was doing it, I got to thinking about some doll wigs that I have that I never use because I don’t like the way they look on my dolls. I’ve had this platinum blonde wig that fits the Little Darling dolls, but I’ve only used it one or two times because it really is too fluffy. Janie is the only Effner doll that I change wigs on… Isabelle has never had her original wig off and Lian always wears her little black bob. Here is the wig on Janie before I did anything to it… maybe you’ll think it looks okay, but I never reached for it, because it really was too much hair for her.

I dug the wig out of the drawer and tried it on Janie once again. It’s a Hannah Wig by Monique and is a size 7/8. As you can see…it’s just too sloppy looking on her.

S-oooooo…. I decided I’d give it a makeover. I turned it into a sweet little blonde bob for Janie and now I think it’s something I’ll use. I started by sectioning off the top layers of the wig and clipping them up on her head.

Then I carefully started snipping off the bottom until I was getting up near her cheeks.

Then it was a matter of just snipping slowly and carefully around and around until I had it even and no stray hairs were sticking out underneath.

So here are just some random shots of Janie in the new wig, some with it combed close to her head, some with it puffed out, some with it rounded and some with it combed back away from her face. She’s very sweet looking in it and I’m glad I decided to cut it off…

I guess I should have taken some pictures with a ribbon or a hairbow or some hair clips in it….

She thinks she looks Just Like Lian now!

    1. Thank you Charlotte,
I’m glad you liked Janie’s haircut…she likes it too!

  1. Oh, that is adorable, Jeanne! That’s a blonde version of what my new Betsy McCall doll has, and it is SO easy to fix and look good! I also have some big bows to put on her hair, and it looks darling! Hats work out really well too, especially the cloche type of hats. On this small of a doll, too much hair can look “fussy”. With less hair, more attention is paid to the outfit, rather than the hair-do. After all, it’s not the 80’s anymore!

    1. Thanks Linda,
I’m liking this new shorter style much better…and it will look sweet with a hat too.
It really does look like Betsy’s hair…
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Hi Becky,
Yes, Janie was anxiously watching me cut something out last night…she is definitely ready for a new dress…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. That’s exactly what I need to do with a wig from the same maker that I got for Ten Ping. Entirely too much hair and too long. You’ve given me the courage to try this when I get home. Thanks, Jeanne.

Having a wonderful time with grandchildren in West Virginia. I’m doing the sewing part of reupholstering some stools, so I feel a bit like Jeanne Marie at the moment.

  3. Love the little bob style on Janie. What a stylist you are. I’m sure mine would turn out like something from Mars.

    1. Hi Joy,
I’ve been cutting my hubby’s hair for 35 years…I figure I can do a tiny doll wig every once in a while!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings,

    1. Thanks Christine,
Yes, a bob haircut IS pretty versatile and I like this new look very much!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. What a darling little towhead Janie makes in this shorter hair style. It reveals more of her sweet face. Who knew The Dressmaker’s Studio was also a Hair Salon? You are a master of many talents, Jeanne. Can’t wait to see what design you choose to complement Janie’s new bob!

    1. HI Anne,
Thank you so much for your sweet compliments on Janie’s new hair style. It is so much better for a little girl… Yes, the Dressmaker’s Studio dabbles a little bit in hair cutting… I need a hair cut myself… but I’m determined to leave mine to the pro’s! :o)
      Thank you very much Anne!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I love the trim you did on the wig! I’ve always thought you do such a nice job on your dolls hair and wondered if you would do blog on styling hair. 🙂 You are so clever changing from curls to braids etc. What do you brush the wigs with? My dolls always seem to have a “bad hair day”!

    1. Hi Ingrid,
I like to fiddle with hair…maybe that’s half the work… I’ve always like to make braids and curls and use ribbons and bows and hats and more. I guess I just figure if it doesn’t look like what you want, change it if you can. I have a pretty good grasp on how it’s supposed to turn out, but it’s really a hit and miss as I’m not a professional.
I just use a doll wig brush, with the silver balls on the ends of the bristles and a comb. The key I think, is to not pull the hair when you are brushing it and use water if it is tangled or seems dry.
I put the dolls in something stable to hold them in place when I am messing with their hair.
Maybe I could do a post on styling dolls hair, but I guess I just thought everyone knew how to brush it and comb it so why did I need to say anything.
      Thanks for your thoughts Ingrid,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. I have rhe Hannah wig too snd the ssme thoughts about it.. live the way you trimmed it into sn adorable bob.. looks a lot like the Bubbles wig.. great styling job, Jeanne!

    1. Thank you Shara,
It does look like the Bubbles wig…you’re right! It’s so much cuter now and really makes a difference in person… too much hair before!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thank you Oksana,
I think I may have accidentally deleted one of your comments. I was on my phone and thought I saw 2 comments from you, but now only see one. If I did, I’m so sorry.
I’m glad you like Janie’s new wig! She likes it too…
Thank you for your nice compliments,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Oh Janie looks adorable in her new “dew!” What a perfect haircut for her face. It is so sweet looking. Jeanne, you are just too talented.

    1. Thank you Paula,
Janie is pretty adorable anyway, but now she’s especially sweet as a little girl. I have sometimes used the Hannah wig on my Nyssa doll who is quite a bit bigger than Janie, but I’d like to see what the difference is when she wears it now. I also have the Hannah wigs in black and a strawberry brownish color… look out!
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. The new look is wonderful for Janie. I’m so glad she gets a new outfit to go with it. I tried cutting the long hair of one of my Effners, and it’s not bad — not as good as yours, but pretty good. I should have sectioned the hair and clipped it, like you did. Live and learn.

My AG’s are wearing Josefina Regency style dresses (like the Christmas dress rather than the birthday dress). Some are inexpensive ones from Etsy — simple with a few details — but they are all dressed up by the pantalettes that just show at the hem — all of them are elaborately embroidered and nicely trimmed I Dream of Jeanne Marie productions, and they make such a difference.

You did have some in your store. Maybe around Christmas, when it’s too late for another lovely Ebay outfit, you could make more, and maybe more lace mitts, and maybe Wellie Wishers nightgowns, and — what would other people like to see? I know we have Rebecca’s necklaces at least some of the time, and they do dress up outfits nicely. Or, of course, maybe you could just cook for a few days. Rest? What’s that?

    1. HI Marilyn,
I bet your wig is just fine! :o) I’ve had to live and learn with a few wigs myself… ALWAYS cut it longer than you think… because it always shrinks up it seems.

Thank you for the nice compliments on my pantalettes, Marilyn. I sure wish I had time to do all the sewing that I have done in the past… pantalettes, panties, crinolines, slips, shoes, nightgowns, dresses… it just goes on and on!
      Thanks so much Marilyn,
      blessings, Jeanne
