A Copycat Creation for American Girl Kit…

It’s nice when a dress gets started and finished in just a few days. This one did…and even though her sleeves looked a little goofy yesterday, I hope you’ll like them better now. I managed to work on the set today and now it’s all completed… so it’s listed on Ebay. You can see the listing by clicking HERE, or by clicking on the picture at the right side bar… —>

One of my very favorite things to do is a little thing I call Copycat Creating…and this was a prime example of it… from this…

I had to redo the sleeves 3 times but on the 3rd try, it worked for me…

I then moved onto her slip… just my basic tulle slip.. maybe a little fancy for the Depression years, but Kit’s thrilled with it.

I was going to make a headband but her hair works better with a bow or a hat…I opted for a bow.. it’s attached to a snap clip so you can use it however you like.

A new pair of white socks were in order. Most of the pictures from the ’30’s had the socks just pulled up but not cuffed down… so I left mine that way too.

When I decided Kit was going to the circus, I tried to find some vintage tickets to copy. I found these from 1933…but the circus is in Wisconsin.. that’s a small detail we’ll just have to overlook…

I hope you like it… you can see it on Ebay HERE… (if you didn’t look at the first link…)

See you tomorrow,
Have a wonderful Saturday…

  1. Kit’s dotted dress came together beautifully, Jeanne. It was rewarding, I’m sure, to finish this one so quickly and easily after so many days away from your sewing room. The sleeves are perfect now, and the red accessories really add a pop. Congrats on your copycat creation, Jeanne. Kit looks very sweet, and I hope she has fun at the circus!

    1. Thank you Anne,
Kit’s dress DID come together pretty quick… just the way I like them to! I’m glad you like the sleeves better now… me too!
I’m sure she’ll have fun at the circus… now to find a ride to Wisconsin… :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. I agree with Christine — Kit looks just darling. It’s a very classic dress and it’s perfect on her. You were definitely right about the hair bow — the simplest solution, and it works better than anything I thought of.
Have you recovered from the sale? How is your sunburn? Did you find anything for you at the antique store?
And the most important question — who is next for a new outfit?

    1. Thank you Marilyn,
I’m glad you like her dress and hair bow…
I actually am still tired from the sale… I took a little nap today. My sunburn is fine… it turned to a tan the next day and wasn’t as bad as it looked I guess. I think my face was chapped from the sweat I kept rubbing off my face and in my eyes.
Today we were moving Jean into his new apartment, so it was up at 8:30 this morning and lots of trips into his place. Then we picked up Sara and her mom and headed to Walmart with Jean to get a few needed things he didn’t have…a broom, paper towels, TP, etc. His family was supposed to have come yesterday, but he was waiting on their Visa’s to clear before he bought their tickets and it was too late on Friday to get them. So now they are coming on Wednesday… We are searching for 3 car seats for his kids to legal in the van.

Hmmm… who will be next? I need to decide tonight.. I’m thinking one of my Effner girls… I think they are going to start the school year off first as I’m wanting to use that little chalkboard that Eileen gave me a while back…
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. How precious Kit looks. And she going to the circus in Baraboo, Wisconsin!
When I was little, we use to camp at Devil’s Lake near Baraboo. We did a lot of hiking.
On one of the camping trips, we drove into Baraboo and my parents took me to a book store and let me pick out some books for my birthday. I got a Nancy Drew book and two books, The Little Colonel, and another storybook of Shirley Temple movies. Both Shirley Temple books had great pictures of Shirley in her roles. I’ve always loved Shirley Temple.

Well, Kit’s outfit is just so darling and her sleeves are perfect, as you make your outfits all perfect.
    Back to packing. Almost done!!

    1. HI Paula,
Well, how neat is that that you’ve been to Baraboo, Wisconsin…right where the Circus is playing! I bet you never guessed you’d see tickets to there, did you? I guess I picked the right ones…
I love seeing Shirley Temple in movies as well…
Thanks for your kind compliments on Kit’s newest dress! :o)
I hope you are almost done with your son’s packing…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Absolutely one of the most adorable dresses you have made to date. Makes me wish I had a Kit doll!

    1. Thank you Linda Marie,
My Kit doll was in a mess when she arrived at my house. She has certainly changed in her looks and I have to admit she looks pretty cute now… I never would have believed she could look so good…
Thanks so much… you should find a Kit doll on Ebay… :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Beautifully done, Jeanne.

I would LOVE to sit with you, going through an album of photos of your doll dresses. (You already do that on various days with different themes that you show your dresses and I love each and every time you do it.) They are all so enchanting and beautifully made. If you’re not already tired of hearing it again, I believe it is an honor to view such lovely work. Thank you for the privilege of seeing the steps you take in creating.

    Take care.

    1. Thank you Becky,
It would be fun to sit and chat about dolls and sewing… We would have fun… I just know it!
Your compliments are so very sweet…thank you so much!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. It’s a beautiful dress and the sleeves are perfect. You really do a wonderful job of translating pictures to patterns and adjusting fit. Take it easy this weekend and stay out of the heat!

    1. Thanks Susette for the Martha Stewart quote yesterday. Believe it or not, only two people in the house and the pie is gone . I did take two pieces to Uncle Don and Ann who looked happy to receive it.

      1. HI Joy,
That’s what happens at my house… I bake something and lo and behold…3 days later and sometimes 2, it’s all gone! I’m glad you enjoyed it… whatever you got! :o)
        Blessings, Jeanne

    2. Thank you Susette for you sweet compliments on Kit’s dress. I did my sleeves just like you did… with the “curved” side gathered up…. I had to laugh… your thought process was just like mine was… :o)
I think my weekend activities might be done so far… I’m not sure if we still have to do anything over at Jean’s apartment….if we do…it’s little stuff.
Thanks for being a faithful reader…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Adorable dress and already on the bay. Good Job!
Those mosquitos do not sound appealing to me at all. Do not like them. We are battling yellow jackets out here. Bought a trap which filled up in one day. Have to go get another today. Can’t feed the cat outside because they land in the dish. Their nests do not appear to be in our yard, because they fly off with food out of the yard, if that makes sense. Sent the brave other person who lives here out on the deck with a fly swatter. Got three!

    1. Thanks so much Joy,
I was thrilled to see a bid on it so soon too! Yay!
I don’t like mosquitoes either…but I think I might dislike yellow jackets even more!
Hope they go away soon… that’s pretty aggravating not to be able to go outside in your own back yard.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Kit looks beautiful in her smart navy dot dress and I see it already has a bid on it. It did come together very quickly and I enjoy seeing your “copycat” version of the original The sleeves look very sweet and I’m sure Kit will stay nice and cool as she enjoys the show.
I’m glad you liked my idea for the circus! It’s great you found some tickets. I was thinking you might have found a poster to copy because Barnum and Bailey’s circus actually did come to Cincinnati, Ohio on July 19th as part of their route in 1934, so Kit really could have gone to it in her home town. I think it’s a shame future kids won’t see a circus. I went to Barnum and Bailey as a child and took my daughter to one as well.

    1. Thank you for the circus idea Laura. It seemed like a good idea to me. Lots of ladies suggested a new school dress, but Kit wasn’t ready for school just yet… so she’ll get a school dress later on.
My color ink cartridge was almost out and I needed to get it listed so I passed on the poster. I did look at them though. I just had to go with tickets…this time…
I have memories of going to circus’s too…
      Blessings, Jeanne
