~ Savory Sunday Surprise ~

Surprise, Surprise on this Sunday morning!

A few days ago I showed you my new pantry filled with my pots and pans and crock pots and steamers, etc.

I mentioned my Savory pan on the bottom and Marilyn mentioned she’d like to know more about it. Well, here’s that post Marilyn!

My Savory pan came from my mother in law and I’ve been using it for years and years. It makes the best pot roast you’ve ever had and also cooks up some mean BBQ chicken too! The secret is in the design of the bottom section…it’s not flat like most pans but has a rounded double walled piece for the bottom. The pan itself is enamelware and mine is dark navy blue or it could be a dark bluish black. You can still see how beautiful it all was when you look at the inside of the dome lid. It’s pretty big and mine measures almost 18″ by 9″ wide.

The secret of cooking great meats is the self basting feature. When the meat cooks and gets juicy, the inside top lid gets all wet and that runs down the sides of the pan to the bottom and I guess you could say, sort of “stirs” up the juices somewhat. They don’t just sit in the juice and cook; the constant running down the sides with the juices keeps the meat juicier and it cooks faster too. I don’t really care about how it works, I just know that it does!

We had pork chops the other night and I thought this was the perfect time to show you my Savory and also show you my chops! :o)

So here are some pictures of it…

It’s hard to tell from my pictures, but this is the underside of the bottom…

Here it is filled with some yummy pork chops…

I don’t know why I thought you needed to see 3 pictures of them cooked, but here they are…

This was my plate… wish you could have tasted them.. no knives were used in this post! :o)

I also have a Savory Jr. that fits inside my big pan…it’s about 14″ long and I used it today…for a tenderloin…

If you happen to see one at a yard sale or a thrift shop sometime, you should give it a try. Most of them are vintage so you need to make sure they don’t have any rusted spots all the way through the bottom. I treat mine like it’s gold. I use it, wash it, dry it and put it away every time it’s used. :o)

Well, that’s what a Savory pan is… you can Google Savory pans too and see more about them… This wasn’t supposed to be a “history” lesson, just a fun post for your Sunday viewing pleasure!

That tenderloin I made today was part of today’s lunch. It was Bithar’s birthday yesterday and we had them over today. I snapped a few pictures of Gaterah so you could see how big she’s gotten…and cute! She even got some of mom’s Turtle Pie and LOVED it!

Have a wonderful Sunday,

See you when I can,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Can’t agree more about this special pan. We were fortunate to have gotten my husbands grandfathers. Your meal looks very yummy, thanks for the post!

    1. Hi Melody,
Yes, this pan makes such wonderful meats!!!
I love mine and it sounds like you love yours too…
      Thanks so much,

  2. Good Sunday morning Jeanne,
I popped in to catch up on what’s new and received a SSS! Savory Sunday Surprise that is. I’ve never heard of a savory pan but learned something new today. How neat you have your mother in law’s pan. It looks like it pumps out tasty meals for sure. Coincidently I’m making pork chops today, how I wish I had a savory pan to try out. Thanks for sharing!
Happy belated Birthday to Bithar. Gaterah has certainly grown and looks like she loved moms dessert.
I really enjoyed all the photos from the other day. That perm contraption is one scary looking machine! Makes me glad I grew up in the 60’s/70’s.
Continued prayers… have a blessed Sunday!
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. Hi Ingrid,
I’m glad you found my surprise today!!! It looks like lots of ladies have missed it… this pan really does make delicious tasting meats…we are eating leftover tenderloin today.

Gaterah LOVED that pie….she’ll be wanting whipped cream from now on… :o)

I’m glad I never saw one of those perm machines either…it still gives me the creeps!!

      Thanks so much Ingrid,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. I have my mom’s pan like that one! I don’t know ‘why’ but, it does make the best, juiciest (is that a word?) meals! I had looked for one of these when mom was living at her house, alone… but, when she moved here with me – that *pan* came too! 🙂

    1. Hi Mary,
Yes…”juciest” is a word…and the best one to describe how this pans makes meat!!! Glad you are in “the Savory club!”
      Thanks Mary,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Looks like another success with your Savory pan. Yum.
Little Gaterah is not so little anymore. On her way to running around soon.
Moved potted plants from the other house yesterday. Not as easy as you may think. Huge jade plant made it all intact as well as a lot of others I have been tending.
    Enjoy your Sunday.

    1. Hi Joy,
Gaterah is just the sweetest baby…she always was…she LOVES her mama!! She has a walker that she likes to move around in…look out mom!!!
Plants can get really big….and I know about those jade plants…we used to have a really big one and used it for a Christmas tree one year…
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. What a surprise post today, Jeanne! I certainlydidn’t expect one and didn’t see this till now. Marilyn is going to love this!
What I am wondering is, is this pan easy to clean? Yours looks brand new! I don’t have the room for something like this in my kitchen, and had my mother-in-law’s too, but kept it in the basement. Finally I just got rid of it, because I never used it, but now I see what a wonderful pan it is to cook in. I only made turkey in it a couple of times. It certainly looks like it makes a lot of food, but we are down to 2 people here now.
Happy birthday to Bithar! Little Gaterah is still adorable, but growing up fast, and looks like a very happy baby!

    1. Hi Linda,
      Surprise, surprise!!!
My pan is very easy to clean…ibe never actually had anything stick in it because it mskes everything do juicy! Not only does it make things tasty, but it really does cook them faster too. They do take some room but I store my small one inside the bigger one and HAVE to have it on hand for larger meals.
Gaterah is a very happy baby…and really a true little doll!!
I hope you are enjoying this weather today… isn’t it lovely outside!!
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. It was so nice to see Gaterah and her mother looking so happy. A lovely child. What great meals you cook, Jeanne. I know the corn casserole recipe is on the site and I think I’ll make it when I go to Texas at the end of May. Maybe the pork chop recipe needs to be there too. Thanks for sharing the stories about the pan. I don’t have my mother’s pan but do remember it well for great pot roasts.

    1. Thanks Susette,
Both Bithar and Gaterah ARE lovely to be around!! It’s always a blessing to be in their company!
The pork chop recipe is simple…spread the pork chops in a pan… (a Savory if you have one), cook for a while, then cover them with a great BBQ sauce and bake some more. That’s my recipe and I’m sticking to it!! :o)
      Thanks Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Bithar is looking wonderful and Gaterah is the cute little doll she always was, but bigger. How nice to see them.

I found several Savory pans on Ebay, some at reasonable prices. As always, you have to watch the shipping. I had chosen one of the smaller ones since I generally cook for one but was waiting to see what you said about it. I read your entry and pressed the Amazon checkout button. In less than a week I’ll have one of my own. That will be interesting.

I see that your Savory pan looks especially nice on your new countertops and with that beautiful backsplash. What a nice surprise this post was on a hardworking Sunday.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
I can’t believe you bought your very own Savory pan! I’m so excited for you and can’t wait to hear what you think the first time you try something!
My pictures were a little washed out from the lights under the cabinet that George put up… I thought maybe next time I could use the photo lights from the light tent and see what happened…
Aren’t Haitians beautiful…from the littlest to mom’s who just turned 35???
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Dorothy in PA

Dear Jeanne, as the non-cook in the bunch (and vegetarian), I skipped right past the cooking information and went directly to the baby, who is adorable! Thanks for sharing these photos of your church family.

    1. Hi Dorothy,
Well, not everybody can be the cook…I’m glad you enjoyed the pictures of Bithar and Gaterah…we had quite a fun photo session while she was feeding her…
      Thanks Dorothy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Dear Jeanie, I want want want a savory pan. I had a lot of trouble bringing a cornbread iron in my luggage, from U.S.A., sent off alarms. (But I have it, and many N.Z. kids have loved my Gems, in the shape of ducks, one or two adults too)
How sensible to have a double skinned broiler. Better than a crock pot for sure. Meat will likely get more expensive each year, cheap cuts rock when well cooked.
Love that darling Gaterah, what an beautiful child she is.
Please tell me turtle pie is not. (Turtle)
Lots of hugs, prayers and dolly love.
Autumn here, made my last lot of refrigerator pickles yesterday. And please could the person who mentioned persimmon steamed pudding give me/us a clue. Epic failure pudding here.

    1. Hi Jane,
Maybe someday, somehow you’ll find your very own Savory pan…if not, just keep using your cornbread pan and making people smile with the goodies you turn out.
Cheap cuts of meat are wonderful in my pan…you got that right.
The Turtle Pie had no turtles in it…it’s just the name of it…I don’t think Gaterah would have like it so much if turtles were in it…:o)

I can’t remember, either, who mentioned about the persimmon pudding, but maybe they’ll see your comment and respond. ..

Happy Autumn to you and enjoy the last of your pickles. :o)
      Thank you Jane,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. Charlotte Trayer

Now that I’ve seen your Savory pan, I guess what I have are plain old enamelware roasters. I may have to keep my eyes open for a Savory pan now, though!

Happy birthday to Bithra! And thanks for sharing pictures of the birthday party and little Gaterah–she is susre growing!

    Prayers continue….

    1. Thanks Charlotte,
There is an oblong enamel ware roaster but it just has the flat bottom…you’ll have to watch for one with the double sidewalls. Just flip them over and you’ll see the difference on the bottom.
Bithar and Gaterah are real blessings in my life. I love them both dearly.
Thanks for your continued prayers, Charlotte.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. I have never seen a roaster like that. When I looked at the first couple of pictures I thought is was a regular roaster, but I can see the difference in the picture with it flipped over. I’ll have to be on the lookout for one because those pork chops look really good.
Gaterah is a pretty baby. She looks like a life-sized baby doll!

    1. HI Carolyn,
They are pretty unique pans in that the bottom isn’t flat…it’s almost like a bowl wrapped with a piece of metal… The air between the 2 walls really cooks things well. You’ll have to go to some antique stores and be on the lookout for one there. :o)

Yes, Gaterah IS a beautiful life sized baby! She’s so adorable and when she says DaDa…it’s so sweet!
      Thanks Carolyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne
